India vs Pakistan: Hockey Rivalry Takes Centre Stage in Asian Games 2026 Semi-Final

The stage is set for another chapter in one of international hockey’s most storied rivalries. India and Pakistan will meet in the first men’s hockey semifinal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 on Thursday, with a place in the gold-medal match at stake.

For India, the semifinal represents another step in their bid to successfully defend the Asian Games title. The defending champions have been unbeaten throughout the tournament, winning all five of their Pool A matches and building significant attacking momentum heading into the knockout phase. Pakistan, meanwhile, arrive after finishing second in Pool B following a narrow 4-5 defeat to Malaysia. 

That result denied them top spot in the group and set up the much-anticipated meeting with India one round earlier than either side might have expected.

The second semifinal will see Malaysia take on South Korea.

India's campaign has been emphatic from the opening match. The defending champions began with a 13-1 victory over Indonesia before defeating Sri Lanka 16-1. They followed those results with an 8-2 victory over South Korea, producing India's biggest-ever Asian Games win against the Korean side.

The toughest pool-stage test came against hosts Japan. India secured a 2-0 victory in that contest before completing the group phase with a commanding 10-0 win over Bangladesh. Five matches, five wins and 49 goals scored underline the attacking efficiency India have displayed so far. They have conceded only four goals across the pool phase.

That attacking depth has also been reflected in the individual scoring charts. Dilpreet Singh has scored nine goals and is joint second among the tournament's leading scorers. Abhishek and captain Harmanpreet Singh have eight each. Harmanpreet remains particularly influential because of his penalty-corner threat. Against Pakistan, that set-piece battle could become one of the key tactical areas of the semifinal.

Pakistan Bring Their Own Penalty-Corner Threat

Pakistan began their Pool B campaign with a 9-0 win over Thailand and followed it with victories over Uzbekistan, China and Oman. They defeated Uzbekistan 5-1, China 3-0 and Oman 7-2 before the narrow loss to Malaysia. Their 28 goals across five matches demonstrate that Pakistan also possess considerable attacking firepower.

The leading threat is Sufiyan Khan, who has scored 11 goals and currently tops the tournament scoring charts. His effectiveness from penalty corners gives Pakistan an important weapon against an Indian defence that will be expected to manage those opportunities carefully. That creates an intriguing individual battle between two of the tournament's leading drag-flick specialists: Pakistan's Sufiyan and India's Harmanpreet.

For both teams, limiting unnecessary penalty corners could be just as important as converting their own chances.

India will have to make a midfield adjustment after Raj Kumar Pal was ruled out with a left thumb fracture suffered during the final pool match against Bangladesh. Nilakanta Sharma has been brought into the squad as his replacement. The midfielder brings major international experience, including appearances at the Olympics and World Cup. India head coach Craig Fulton acknowledged the disappointment surrounding Raj Kumar Pal's injury while emphasising the experience Nilakanta brings into the squad.

“It’s just unfortunate for Raj. At the same time, we have great experience that’s coming in. Nilakanta has been at the Olympics, World Cup. So, it’s a nice addition in terms of an experienced player coming in at an important time.”

The change gives India an experienced option in midfield, but it also means the team must adapt without a player who had been part of its successful pool-stage campaign.

A Rivalry With History

The numbers surrounding the current tournament form are only part of the story. India have not lost to Pakistan since the 2016 South Asian Games final, and Thursday's semifinal adds another high-pressure contest to a rivalry that has repeatedly produced significant moments in Asian hockey.

India will therefore enter with the objective of maintaining their unbeaten tournament record while Pakistan will look to disrupt the defending champions' path to another Asian Games final. For Fulton, the importance of the occasion is clear.

“In tournament hockey, all roads lead to this point. Semi-finals are games of consequence, so it’s exciting,” he said.

The Indian coach also highlighted the areas his team will focus on, particularly penalty-corner attack and defence. The weather in Kakamigahara is forecast to be sunny after heavy rain affected the start of the week, providing different playing conditions for Thursday's contest.

India's attacking numbers have been impressive, but the semifinal is likely to demand greater precision than the pool-stage victories. Pakistan possess the scoring ability to punish defensive lapses, while their penalty-corner threat means India will need to remain disciplined inside the shooting circle. At the other end, Pakistan will have to deal with an Indian attack that has produced 49 goals in five matches and features multiple players capable of deciding a contest.

With the Asian Games final now just one victory away, neither side can afford a slow start or an error-heavy performance. For India, victory would secure a place in the gold-medal match and move the defending champions one step closer to successfully retaining their Asian Games crown. For Pakistan, the semifinal provides an opportunity to overturn the tournament's current form and reach the final at India's expense.
