India begin their Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against Pakistan, aiming to extend their dominant head-to-head record in Birmingham.

The stage is set for another chapter in one of cricket’s biggest rivalries as India take on Pakistan in their opening match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Sunday.

Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India enter the tournament with aspirations of adding a T20 world title to the ODI World Cup crown they secured last year, while Pakistan will be eager to upset the favourites and make an early statement. Although India have dominated this rivalry over the years, opening matches at ICC events often bring added pressure and unpredictability. A positive start could prove crucial in shaping the momentum for the remainder of the tournament.

History strongly favours the Women in Blue. India have won 13 of the 16 T20 internationals played against Pakistan, including their most recent meeting at the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in Dubai, where they registered a comfortable six-wicket victory. Since then, India have evolved into an even stronger white-ball outfit. The squad has largely remained intact and gained confidence after lifting the ODI World Cup trophy, making them one of the leading contenders for the T20 title.

However, Pakistan have shown signs of improvement and possess several match-winners capable of changing the course of a game.

Much of India’s batting success could depend on the performance of openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. Mandhana remains one of the finest batters in world cricket, but her recent run has been inconsistent despite producing a brilliant 82 against Australia earlier in the year. Similarly, Shafali has struggled to convert starts into substantial scores after an impressive knock against South Africa.

Against a disciplined Pakistani bowling attack, India will hope the experienced duo can provide a strong platform and ease pressure on the middle order. A fluent opening partnership would allow the team’s powerful middle-order hitters to play with greater freedom in the latter stages of the innings.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur enters the tournament in encouraging form after registering two half-centuries during recent series against South Africa and England. Her experience in handling high-pressure contests makes her one of India’s most important players, particularly if early wickets fall.

India’s middle order also boasts quality through Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh, and Bharti Fulmali. Rodrigues offers stability and excellent strike rotation, while Ghosh’s aggressive finishing ability has the potential to change matches rapidly. Wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia has also shown promising form, although improving her scoring rate could make India’s batting line-up even more dangerous.

Veteran all-rounder Deepti Sharma remains one of India’s most dependable performers across formats. Her ability to contribute with both bat and ball gives the team valuable balance, particularly in conditions where spin may come into play during the middle overs. Deepti’s experience of performing in ICC tournaments could prove decisive against Pakistan’s batting line-up.

India’s bowling attack, however, will be without injured all-rounders Amanjot Kaur and Kashvee Gautam, placing greater responsibility on experienced pacers Renuka Singh and Arundhati Reddy.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana arrives in Birmingham as arguably her side’s biggest threat. The talented all-rounder has enjoyed an exceptional run over the past year, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. Her ability to strike early with the new ball and accelerate rapidly with the bat makes her one of the key players India will need to contain.

Pakistan’s bowling attack also features experienced left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu, whose economical style could prove effective in restricting India’s aggressive batting unit. Support from players such as Muneeba Ali, Aliya Riaz and Sadia Iqbal will be essential if Pakistan hope to challenge one of the tournament favourites.

India head into the World Cup following several encouraging bilateral series. Victories over Australia away from home (2-1), England (3-2) and a dominant 5-0 sweep against Sri Lanka have demonstrated the team’s adaptability across different conditions. At the same time, defeats against South Africa and England exposed areas requiring improvement, particularly at the top of the batting order.

Those experiences may serve as valuable lessons entering a tournament where consistency across all departments is vital.

India appear to possess greater depth in both batting and bowling. Their combination of experienced campaigners and explosive young talent gives them multiple match-winning options. Pakistan, meanwhile, are likely to rely on disciplined bowling and opportunistic batting performances to challenge the favourites. Fielding standards and execution in pressure situations could also become decisive factors, especially in what is expected to be a high-intensity contest.

Opening matches often carry extra significance in ICC tournaments, and both teams will be eager to begin with a victory. For India, a win would reinforce their status as title contenders and continue their impressive record against Pakistan. It would also provide valuable momentum ahead of tougher fixtures later in the competition.

Pakistan, on the other hand, have the opportunity to create one of the biggest upsets of the tournament and build confidence for the matches to come.

With star players on both sides, contrasting styles of play and the weight of a historic rivalry, Sunday’s clash in Birmingham promises to be an intriguing contest as the Women’s T20 World Cup campaign gets underway.
