The Indian Army Ice Hockey Team emerged victorious in the inaugural Royal Enfield Challengers' Cup, defeating Leh Kings 6-5 in a breathtaking final at the Nawang Dorjay Stobdan (NDS) Stadium in Leh on Friday.

Played before a packed crowd, the title clash delivered everything expected of a championship final. The Indian Army side, regarded as the benchmark of Indian ice hockey, was pushed to the limit by a spirited Leh Kings team comprising players selected from the Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League. The contest swung repeatedly before Padma Namgail scored the decisive goal late in the third period to secure the historic first title.

The developmental side showed no signs of being overawed by the occasion. Leh Kings struck first through Tsering Angchuk, who converted an excellent assist from Mushtaque Ahmad Giri to hand the home favourites an early advantage. The Indian Army, however, quickly responded.

Dorjay Angchuk restored parity after being set up by Phuntsog Namgail, before Jigmath Kunzang gave the Army side the lead by finishing a move created by Padma Namgail. Five teams competed in a round-robin format before the top two advanced to the championship game. The participating teams included Leh Kings, Kargil Warriors, Spiti Titans, the Indian Army Ice Hockey Team, and the Central Ice Hockey Team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

Throughout the tournament, regional players also benefited from dedicated daily on-ice coaching sessions, further strengthening the developmental objectives of the competition.

The event also showcased the growing infrastructure supporting ice hockey in India. Hosted at Leh's newly upgraded all-season artificial ice rink, the six-day tournament attracted more than 15,000 spectators, many of whom experienced competitive ice hockey for the first time.

Speaking after the final, Vigyat Singh, Director at Eicher Group Foundation, highlighted how the tournament reflected years of investment in coaches, officials and young athletes while demonstrating the importance of year-round competition in accelerating player development.

Indian Army captain Tsewang Namgyal echoed those sentiments, emphasising the value of giving young players from Ladakh and Spiti the opportunity to compete before large crowds during the peak tourist season, exposing both athletes and the sport to a much wider audience.

Although the Indian Army lifted the trophy, the biggest winner may well have been Indian ice hockey itself. Leh Kings' fearless display against the country's most accomplished team demonstrated that the gap between grassroots talent and elite competition is steadily narrowing.
