India's leading track and field athletes are set for one final domestic showdown before the Asian Games, as the Indian Athletics Series Final takes centre stage at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on September 10. 

With the country's top-ranked athletes competing for substantial prize money and valuable match practice, the one-day invitational meet is expected to be one of the strongest domestic athletics competitions ever staged in India.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has announced that the winner of each of the 31 events will receive ₹1 lakh, while prize money will be awarded up to sixth place. More importantly, the meet is likely to feature two-time Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who is expected to make his long-awaited domestic appearance before heading to the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya later this month.

The competition will not only reward excellence financially but also serve as the final opportunity for India's elite athletes to fine-tune their preparations before the continent's biggest multi-sport event.

For the first time in many years, Indian athletics will witness a domestic meet with a significantly enhanced prize structure. Each event winner will earn ₹1 lakh, while the runner-up will receive ₹50,000. Athletes finishing third, fourth, fifth and sixth will take home ₹25,000, ₹20,000, ₹15,000 and ₹10,000, respectively.

The move reflects the AFI's continued efforts to make domestic athletics more competitive and financially rewarding. While prize money has been offered previously—most notably during the 2009 Indian Grand Prix series, where winners earned ₹15,000 each the scale of the rewards at the Indian Athletics Series Final represents a substantial increase. By rewarding performances beyond the podium, the federation hopes to encourage greater competitiveness across every event.

Unlike regular domestic competitions, the Indian Athletics Series Final will feature only the country's top performers. According to AFI President Bahadur Singh Sagoo, invitations have been sent to athletes ranked highest in their respective disciplines based on performances recorded during the 2026 domestic season. The top eight athletes in each track and field event have qualified for the final, while the 1500m and 3000m steeplechase will feature the top twelve athletes due to the nature of distance racing.

The rankings are based on performances recorded up to the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, held in Bhubaneswar from June 24 to June 28. Athletes were required to confirm their participation by August 10, and if any qualified athlete withdraws, reserve athletes will receive invitations based on the rankings.

This qualification-based format ensures that every event features the country's strongest competitors rather than large participation fields.

Neeraj Chopra Headlines Star-Studded Field

The biggest attraction is expected to be Neeraj Chopra. The Olympic champion currently sits second in the national rankings with his 85.69m throw achieved at the Doha Diamond League, having competed sparingly this season due to workload management. Interestingly, Rohit Yadav tops the domestic rankings after producing a season-best 87.05m at the National Inter-State Championships in Bhubaneswar.

If both athletes compete, the men's javelin promises to be one of the highlights of the meet. For Indian fans, it also represents a rare opportunity to watch Neeraj compete on home soil before he travels to Japan for the Asian Games.

India's sprint revolution will also be on display. National record holder Gurindervir Singh heads into the meet as the top-ranked athlete in the men's 100m, while Animesh Kujur leads the rankings in the 200m following another exceptional domestic season. The men's 400m will feature Vishal TK, whose national record performances have established him as India's premier one-lap runner.

These events have become increasingly competitive over the past two seasons, with multiple athletes consistently breaking national benchmarks and closing the gap on Asia's leading sprinters.

The women's competition is expected to be equally strong. Vithya Ramraj tops the rankings in both the 400m and 400m hurdles, underlining her dominance over the domestic circuit. Middle-distance runner Pooja leads both the 800m and 1500m, while Parul Chaudhary enters as the highest-ranked athlete in the 3000m steeplechase.

National record holder Jyothi Yarraji will start as the favourite in the 100m hurdles, thanks to her season-best of 12.99 seconds. In the field events, Pooja Singh leads the women's high jump rankings, while Ancy Sojan heads into the long jump as India's top-ranked athlete. Together, these athletes represent the core of India's medal hopes for the Asian Games later this month.

Beyond the prize money and national rankings, the Indian Athletics Series Final carries enormous strategic importance. The meet comes just nine days before the Asian Games begin in Aichi-Nagoya, making it the final competitive outing for many of India's top athletes before they face Asia's best.
