Kidambi Srikanth rolled back the years in Shenzhen as the former world No. 1 produced one of India's standout performances at the China Masters 2026, defeating Taiwan's higher-ranked Chi Yu Jen in straight games to book his place in the Round of 16.

Ranked 34th in the world, Srikanth entered the opening-round contest against Chi Yu Jen, who sits at No. 21 in the BWF rankings. The ranking difference, however, proved irrelevant as the experienced Indian controlled the match from the crucial stages and secured a convincing 21-16, 21-15 victory.

The win was especially important for Srikanth, who continues to compete against a younger generation of players on the BWF World Tour. At a BWF Super 750 tournament, where the quality of opposition is considerably higher, defeating a player ranked 13 places above him represents a significant statement.

Srikanth's reward for his opening-round victory is a meeting with Victor Lai in the Round of 16. The Canadian had earlier defeated Lakshya Sen 21-14, 21-7, meaning Srikanth now faces the player who eliminated his compatriot.
