Lakshya Sen Wins Hylo Open Defeating World Number 6 Jonatan Christie

Lakshya Sen defeated World No. 6 Jonatan Christie 21-17, 21-10 to win the Hylo Open 2026 men's singles title, completing a historic Indian singles double with PV Sindhu.
Lakshya Sen delivered a commanding performance in Saarbrücken, Germany, to defeat Indonesia’s World No. 6 Jonatan Christie and win the men’s singles title at the Hylo Open 2026.
The Indian shuttler secured a 21-17, 21-10 victory in the final, completing a remarkable campaign and claiming his first title of the 2026 season. The triumph was particularly significant for Indian badminton as PV Sindhu had also won the women’s singles title at the same tournament. It marked the first time since 2022 that two Indian players had won singles titles at the same BWF Super 500 event, giving India a memorable double in Germany.
For Sen, the victory ended a wait for a trophy that had stretched back to his triumph at the 2025 Australian Open. It also added a second Hylo Open title to his record and took his tally to seven BWF World Tour titles.
Facing a formidable opponent in Christie, Sen produced a composed and aggressive display. The Indonesian, ranked sixth in the world, came into the final as one of the tournament's leading contenders, but Sen controlled the contest with his movement, attacking intent and ability to dictate rallies.
The opening game was closely contested, with Sen eventually establishing control to take it 21-17. Having secured the first game, the Indian raised his level further in the second. Christie struggled to find consistent answers as Sen took charge of the exchanges and closed out the match 21-10.
The victory was especially noteworthy given Christie's standing in international badminton. Sen had now defeated the Indonesian in their last two meetings at major tournaments. He had beaten Christie at the All England Championships in 2025, when the Indonesian was the defending champion, and repeated the result at the Hylo Open, where Christie again arrived as the defending champion.
Sen's ability to overcome a player of Christie's quality in successive encounters underlined the progress he has made in establishing himself among the leading contenders on the international circuit.
Sen's title-winning campaign was built on five victories, including three successive matches in which he had to recover after losing the opening game. His tournament began against Finland's Joakim Oldorff, ranked World No. 59. Sen lost the first game 16-21 but responded emphatically, winning the next two 21-9, 21-13 to advance.
The round of 16 brought an all-Indian encounter against Kiran George, ranked World No. 55. Sen took the first game 21-15, but George fought back to claim the second 21-18. Sen regained control in the decider, winning 21-12 after a 54-minute contest.
The quarter-final against Finland's Kalle Koljonen presented another test. Ranked World No. 67, Koljonen took the opening game 21-14. Sen once again demonstrated his ability to adjust, winning the next two games 21-17, 21-13 in a 66-minute encounter.
In the semi-final, Sen faced France's Toma Junior Popov, the world No. 13. Unlike his previous three matches, the Indian did not need a decider. He produced a straight-game victory, winning 21-17, 21-13, to book his place in the final.
The win over Christie completed a campaign in which Sen had beaten opponents ranked 59, 55, 67, 13 and six in the world.
The Hylo Open double was a significant achievement for India. Sindhu's women's singles victory and Sen's men's singles triumph meant Indian players topped both singles podiums at a BWF Super 500 tournament for the first time since 2022.
Sen's victory also carried significance beyond his individual title. It brought an end to an eight-year run of Indonesian representation in the men's singles world rankings' top eight, a streak that had begun in 2018. His defeat of Christie was a symbolic marker of the changing competitive landscape in men's singles badminton.
For Sen, the immediate reward is a seventh World Tour title and a successful start to the closing stretch of the 2026 season. More importantly, the manner of his victory against a top-six opponent provides further evidence of his ability to convert strong tournament performances into major titles.
With Sindhu and Sen both crowned champions in Saarbrücken, the Hylo Open 2026 became a memorable tournament for Indian badminton. It was a week in which India's leading singles players delivered when it mattered most, leaving Germany with two titles and another significant milestone for the sport.
