India's Tejaswin Shankar made an impressive start in the decathlon long jump, soaring to 7.42m on his opening attempt to move into third place in the event standings.

Only Canada's Damian Warner (7.77m) and Scotland's Callum Newby (7.45m) are ahead of the Indian after the first round, with Tejaswin's jump earning him 915 points in the decathlon.

India's Yash Vir Singh improved on his second attempt, registering 74.45m, just over half a metre better than his opening throw.

Rohit Yadav also found a better rhythm, producing a 78.37m effort to climb into the top five of the standings.

Meanwhile, two-time world champion Anderson Peters responded with a strong 81.29m throw, moving into second place, just behind Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage (82.84m).

India's Neeraj Chopra began his men's javelin qualification campaign with a throw of 76.28m on his first attempt.

Competing in windy conditions, the Olympic champion appeared to hold back slightly on the release despite a strong run-up. The effort placed him sixth on the leaderboard after the opening round, leaving work to do in his remaining attempts to secure qualification for the final.

Former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago opened his men's javelin qualification campaign with a throw of 78.26m, well short of the automatic qualifying mark of 83.00m.

Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem also fell short with a season-best 78.63m on his opening attempt, meaning his wait for an 80m throw this season continues.

After the opening event, Tejaswin is seventh overall in the decathlon standings, 170 points behind the leader and 91 points adrift of the medal positions.
