Mohun Bagan Super Giant host Chennaiyin FC in the ISL 2026-27 season, seeking a second straight win as the visitors chase their first victory.

The Mariners return to the Salt Lake Stadium after a morale-boosting victory over SC Delhi, while Chennaiyin FC seek their first win of the season after collecting just one point from their opening two matches.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant will look to build on their recent victory and make a winning impression at home when they face Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League 2026-27 season at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday.

The fixture marks Mohun Bagan’s first home match of the 13th edition of the ISL, giving the Mariners an opportunity to establish momentum in front of their supporters. Head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis will want his team to carry forward the confidence gained from its 2-1 win over SC Delhi after opening the campaign with a 0-1 defeat to NorthEast United FC in Guwahati.

Chennaiyin, meanwhile, arrive in Kolkata under pressure to improve their results. Clifford Miranda’s side has taken only one point from its first two matches, drawing 1-1 against FC Goa before losing 2-0 to Bengaluru FC. The visitors will need greater efficiency in attack and improved defensive organisation to challenge a Mohun Bagan side that has rediscovered its winning touch.

The Mariners’ victory over SC Delhi demonstrated their ability to recover from an early setback and find a route to three points. That response will be encouraging for Dilmperis, although the opening defeat against NorthEast United underlined the need to maintain concentration throughout the match.

Mohun Bagan’s strength lies in the technical quality and depth of its Indian players. Apuia and Sahal Abdul Samad can help control the tempo in midfield, giving the team options to retain possession and build attacks through the centre.

Out wide, Liston Colaco and Manvir Singh offer pace, direct running and the ability to create chances. Their movement could be important against a Chennaiyin defence that will need to remain compact while also accounting for Mohun Bagan’s central combinations.

The hosts, however, could face a selection challenge in attack. Foreign forwards Jamie Maclaren and Miguel Figueira are dealing with injuries, and their availability remained uncertain ahead of the match. Dilmperis indicated that a final decision would be taken after Sunday’s training session.

Their potential absence would require Mohun Bagan to adjust its attacking approach, particularly in the final third. The team will need to preserve its attacking threat without sacrificing defensive balance, especially if Chennaiyin look to exploit spaces during transitions.

The Mariners will also be aware that their previous 2-0 home victory over Chennaiyin offers a positive reference point. Reproducing that performance, however, will require more than relying on past results.

Chennaiyin need greater attacking precision

Chennaiyin FC’s opening two fixtures have produced contrasting lessons. The draw against FC Goa earned a point, while the defeat to Bengaluru exposed the team’s difficulty in converting attacking pressure into goals.

Against Bengaluru, Chennaiyin registered 20 attempts on goal but failed to score. The volume of opportunities suggested that the side could reach dangerous positions, but its finishing and decision-making in the final third proved inadequate.

That issue will be central to Miranda’s preparations for Monday’s encounter. Against a technically capable opponent playing at home, Chennaiyin may not be able to afford repeated missed opportunities.

French playmaker Madih Talal is expected to play a key role in the visitors’ attacking structure. His ability to connect midfield with the forward line and create opportunities for teammates could determine how effectively Chennaiyin challenge Mohun Bagan’s defence.

Brazilian forward Ramon Tanque will lead the attack, while Irfan Yadwad’s pace provides another option, particularly on the counter-attack. If Chennaiyin can move the ball quickly after regaining possession, they may be able to exploit spaces left by the hosts when they commit players forward.

Defensively, the visitors will need greater discipline than they showed against Bengaluru. Keeping their shape, limiting space between the lines and tracking Mohun Bagan’s wide runners will be essential to preventing the hosts from controlling the match.

The midfield contest could prove decisive in determining which team establishes control. Mohun Bagan have the technical resources to dictate possession through Apuia and Sahal, while Chennaiyin will look to Talal to provide creativity and connect their defensive and attacking phases.

If the Mariners control the central areas, they can use Colaco and Manvir to stretch the visitors and create openings. Chennaiyin, by contrast, will need to disrupt that rhythm and make their transitions count rather than allow the hosts to settle into sustained attacks.

The fitness of Mohun Bagan’s foreign forwards will also influence the tactical picture. Their availability could affect the hosts’ ability to finish moves and maintain pressure in the attacking third.

Mohun Bagan enter the contest with renewed confidence and the advantage of playing at home. A second consecutive victory would strengthen their early-season momentum and provide a more consistent start after the opening defeat.

Chennaiyin face a different objective: turning encouraging attacking spells into tangible results. Their performance against Bengaluru showed an ability to generate attempts, but the next step is to convert those opportunities while remaining organised defensively.

The Mariners will aim to control proceedings and take advantage of their home support. Chennaiyin will look to frustrate the hosts, exploit counter-attacking opportunities and improve their finishing.

With both sides having clear objectives, Monday’s meeting presents Mohun Bagan with a chance to build momentum and Chennaiyin with an opportunity to reset their campaign. The team that combines greater composure in midfield with sharper execution in front of goal could hold the decisive advantage.
