India registered a mixed but encouraging set of results on the fourth morning of the World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 26, with Nitin Gupta finishing sixth in the men’s 5000m race walk and the Indian women’s 4x400m relay team advancing to the final.

Gupta clocked 19:32.30 to finish sixth in a highly competitive race won by Australia’s Isaac Beacroft, who established a new world U20 record of 18:40.37. The Indian race walker remained in contention among a strong international field and secured a top-six finish despite the exceptional pace set at the front.

India’s women’s 4x400m relay team also progressed to the final after Germany won the third heat in 3:34.35. The Indian quartet was among the teams securing qualification for the medal race, where it will line up alongside the United States, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Australia, Great Britain & Northern Ireland, Nigeria and Jamaica.

The two results provide India with further opportunities to challenge for strong finishes as the championships move towards their concluding stages.

The men’s 5000m race walk turned into one of the most competitive events of the morning, with Beacroft producing a remarkable performance to take the gold medal in a world U20 record.

China’s Pu Huajia finished second in 18:43.70, setting an Asian U20 record, while Italy’s Nicolò Vidal secured bronze in a personal best of 18:56.19.

Gupta completed the race in 19:32.30 to take sixth place. His performance placed him ahead of Mexico’s Osvaldo Miramontes, who established an area U20 record of 19:34.07.

For Indian athletics, Gupta’s sixth-place finish represents a significant result in a field that witnessed extraordinary front-running performances. The Indian athlete was unable to match the pace of the medal contenders but maintained enough consistency to secure a top-six placing at a global championship.

The race also highlighted the increasingly high standards in junior race walking, with several athletes producing personal, continental or world age-group records.

Beacroft Sets New Benchmark

Beacroft's victory was particularly significant as he became the first Australian athlete to win a race walk title at the World U20 Championships.

The 19-year-old entered the event in strong form after winning the 10,000m race walk at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 31. His latest performance adds another major achievement to an already impressive junior career.

For Gupta and the rest of the field, the Australian's pace created an exceptionally demanding race. Beacroft's victory also underlined the level that India's young race walkers will need to target as they progress towards senior international competition.

India Through to Women's 4x400m Relay Final

India's other major development came in the women's 4x400m relay, where the team secured its place in the final.

The event features several of the world's strongest junior relay programmes, making qualification itself a significant achievement. The United States topped the first round with 3:32.66, while Italy set a national U20 record of 3:33.63 to win the second heat.

Germany won the third heat in 3:34.35, with Slovenia following in 3:35.60, also a national U20 record.

India will now have the opportunity to compete directly against established sprinting nations in the medal race. The final will provide the Indian athletes with valuable experience in a high-pressure global championship environment and an opportunity to improve on their qualifying performance.

Relay events also offer India an important pathway for developing greater depth in women's sprinting. Consistent appearances in global junior finals can help expose athletes to international race conditions while building experience for senior-level championships.

With the women's 4x400m relay final still to come, India has another opportunity to make an impact at Oregon 26. The qualification comes at a time when Indian athletics continues to focus on developing a deeper pool of young international-level athletes. While individual medal hopes remain central to any championship campaign, performances such as Gupta's sixth-place finish and the relay team's qualification provide useful indicators of India's progress across different disciplines.

The competition has also demonstrated the demanding standards facing India's next generation. Beacroft's world U20 record and the numerous national, continental and personal bests recorded across events underline the intensity of junior international athletics.

For Gupta, a sixth-place finish provides a solid result at a major global championship and valuable experience against the world's leading young race walkers. For the women's 4x400m team, reaching the final offers an even bigger opportunity to test itself against the best junior relay squads.

As the World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 26 move towards the medal-deciding sessions, India will look to convert its qualification into another competitive performance and finish the championships on a strong note.
