NorthEast United Beat Churchill Brothers 2-0 to Extend Unbeaten Run to Five Matches

NorthEast United beat Churchill Brothers 2-0 in the ISL 2026-27 as Ethyan González and Antonio Moyano score to extend the Highlanders' unbeaten run to five matches.
Goals from Ethyan González and Antonio Moyano secure another three points for the Highlanders, who maintain their strong start to the ISL 2026-27 season with a disciplined performance in Fatorda.
NorthEast United FC continued their impressive start to the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) season with a 2-0 victory over Churchill Brothers at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa, on Thursday. First-half strike from Ethyan González and a stoppage-time finish by Antonio Moyano ensured the Highlanders extended their unbeaten run to five matches.
The victory further strengthened NorthEast United's position at the top of the standings, at least provisionally, as they continued to combine attacking efficiency with defensive resilience. Churchill Brothers, meanwhile, suffered another setback after entering the fixture looking to recover from consecutive defeats.
The result reflected NorthEast's ability to manage different phases of a contest. While they started aggressively and took an early lead, they were also required to withstand sustained pressure from Churchill in the second half before securing the result late in the game.
The Highlanders made their attacking intent count in the 16th minute, when Ethyan González opened the scoring with an accomplished finish. The goal originated from a quick counter-attacking move after Churchill Brothers were caught out defensively. NorthEast capitalised on the space available, with Jithin MS providing the assist for González.
The forward finished with the outside of his boot, directing the ball into the net to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The early breakthrough was important for NorthEast, allowing them to approach the remainder of the first half with greater control. It also exposed the defensive vulnerabilities that have troubled Churchill in recent matches.
For the Red Machines, conceding early was another difficult moment in a campaign where defensive mistakes have proved costly. Having already conceded seven goals across their previous two outings, they needed a more organised response to prevent NorthEast from extending their advantage.
The Highlanders, however, remained comfortable with their approach, looking to exploit opportunities on the counter while protecting their lead.
Churchill fight back after the interval
Churchill Brothers emerged with greater urgency in the second half, pushing players forward in search of an equaliser. The hosts attempted to put NorthEast's defensive structure under sustained pressure, showing greater attacking intent than they had in the opening period. With the score still at 1-0, the contest remained open, and Churchill had an opportunity to change its direction with a breakthrough.
NorthEast, however, responded with composure and discipline.
Rather than allowing the hosts to dictate the contest, the Highlanders remained organised at the back and dealt with Churchill's attempts to find an opening. Their defensive resilience became particularly important as the second half progressed and the pressure on the visitors increased.
For Churchill, the inability to convert their improved second-half approach into an equaliser proved decisive. Despite their efforts, they could not find a way past the NorthEast defence.
With Churchill still searching for a late equaliser, NorthEast United found the opportunity to put the result beyond doubt. In the third minute of stoppage time, Abdul Rabeeh set up Antonio Moyano, who finished with his right foot to make it 2-0.
The effort took a deflection on its way towards goal, but it was enough to beat the goalkeeper and confirm all three points for the Highlanders. The timing of the goal ensured there would be no late comeback from Churchill. It also rewarded NorthEast's ability to remain patient and take advantage of the space available as the hosts committed players forward.
Moyano's strike completed a disciplined away performance, with González providing the early breakthrough and the defence holding firm when tested after the interval.
Five matches into their ISL campaign, NorthEast United have established themselves as one of the early contenders. Their unbeaten run reflects a side capable of producing attacking moments while maintaining the defensive organisation required to protect results.
The victory over Churchill was particularly significant because it demonstrated both aspects of their game. González's first-half goal showcased their ability to transition quickly and punish defensive errors, while their second-half performance highlighted their composure under pressure.
For Churchill Brothers, the defeat extends a difficult run and raises further questions about their defensive consistency. Their improved second-half effort offered some encouragement, but the inability to score and the late concession meant they left Fatorda without a point.
NorthEast United will take confidence from another successful outing as they look to sustain their challenge at the top of the table. With five consecutive matches without defeat, the Highlanders have made a strong statement in the opening phase of the 2026-27 season.
