With just a month remaining before the world's biggest badminton tournament returns to India, the countdown to the BWF World Championships 2026 officially entered its final phase on Saturday with the unveiling of Peacko, the tournament's official mascot, and the launch of the championship anthem.

The ceremony, held in New Delhi, was led by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya alongside Badminton Association of India (BAI) President and Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, marking an important milestone in India's preparations to host the prestigious event from August 17 to 23.

The launch also introduced the first-ever official championship anthem featuring India's entire 16-member World Championships contingent, including stars PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, and several of the country's rising badminton talents.

Inspired by the Indian peafowl, the country's national bird, Peacko has been designed to represent both India's rich cultural identity and the sport of badminton.

The mascot blends traditional symbolism with modern sporting imagery. Its vibrant design incorporates elements inspired by a shuttlecock while celebrating New Delhi's long-standing connection with badminton, a sport played everywhere from neighbourhood parks to the lawns surrounding India Gate.

Beyond being the face of the tournament, Peacko will spearhead the Badminton Association of India's nationwide fan engagement campaign, with a series of promotional activities planned over the next month to build excitement ahead of the championships.

As India prepares to welcome more than 400 players from over 50 countries, the mascot is expected to play a central role in connecting fans with the tournament.

India's First-Ever World Championships Anthem

Alongside the mascot, organisers unveiled what is being described as India's first official anthem for the BWF World Championships. Featuring all 16 Indian shuttlers selected for the Championships together off the court for the first time, the anthem reflects the confidence, unity and ambition of Indian badminton as it prepares for its biggest home event in nearly two decades.

Inspired by the energy of New Delhi and contemporary Indian street rap culture, the anthem aims to appeal to younger audiences while encouraging fans across the country to rally behind the home team.

The video brings together some of Indian badminton's biggest names, including five-time World Championships medallist PV Sindhu, former World Championships medallist Lakshya Sen, the celebrated men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, along with the rest of India's squad.

It presents a different side of the athletes, moving away from the competitive atmosphere of the badminton court and showcasing their shared excitement ahead of competing on home soil.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya described the championships as another important milestone in India's emergence as a global sporting destination. He credited the country's sporting growth to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting India's increasing success in hosting major international events across multiple disciplines.

Mandaviya said the return of the BWF World Championships after 17 years reflects both the rising stature of Indian badminton and the country's commitment to building world-class sporting infrastructure.

He also encouraged sports fans from across India to travel to New Delhi and support the home players during the week-long tournament.

The Sports Minister further emphasised that initiatives such as the Khelo Bharat Niti, the National Sports Governance Act, and the upcoming Khelo India Mission form part of a broader roadmap to strengthen India's sporting ecosystem as the country works towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. He also noted that while badminton is absent from the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, it is expected to return at the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, giving Indian shuttlers another major multi-sport platform in the future.

The 30th edition of the BWF World Championships promises to be one of the strongest ever, bringing together the world's leading badminton players across men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.

India's challenge will be spearheaded by PV Sindhu, who enters the tournament with an opportunity to create history. Already a five-time World Championships medallist, Sindhu could become the most successful medallist in the tournament's history if she reaches the podium once again in New Delhi.

Joining her will be former World Championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen, star doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, and an exciting group of emerging players including Ayush Shetty, Unnati Hooda, and women's doubles duo Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly.

Competing in front of home fans is expected to provide additional motivation as India looks to produce one of its strongest performances at the Championships.

BAI President Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma described the return of the championships to India as a landmark moment for the sport. He said the event represents not only an opportunity to host one of badminton's biggest competitions but also a chance to celebrate India's remarkable journey from an emerging badminton nation to one of the sport's global powerhouses.

BAI General Secretary Sanjay Mishra echoed those sentiments, saying the unveiling of Peacko and the championship anthem gives fans their first glimpse of the identity and spirit of New Delhi 2026.

According to Mishra, both initiatives have been designed to engage audiences across generations while building excitement during the final month before the tournament begins. With Peacko now unveiled, the championship anthem released and the final countdown officially underway, preparations for the BWF World Championships 2026 have entered their most exciting phase.

As the world's finest badminton players prepare to arrive in New Delhi, India now stands ready to host the sport's biggest event for the first time in 17 years, with hopes high that the home contingent can turn the occasion into another memorable chapter in Indian badminton history.
