Lakshya Sen Suffers Another Early Exit at China Masters 2026, Loses to Victor Lai in Straight Games

For Lakshya Sen, the China Masters 2026 ended with another early exit and yet another reminder of the inconsistency that has followed his campaign this season. India's No. 1 men's singles shuttler was knocked out in the opening round of the BWF Super 750 tournament in Shenzhen after suffering a one-sided defeat against Canada's Victor Lai.

Sen went down 14-21, 7-21 in just 38 minutes, producing a performance that never quite matched the intensity expected from a player of his stature. The defeat was particularly disappointing because of the way the contest slipped away after a competitive start.

It was also Sen's third consecutive defeat against Lai, adding another difficult chapter to what has been a frustrating 2026 campaign.

The opening game initially offered some encouragement for Sen. The Indian made a sharp start and raced into a 4-0 lead, suggesting he was ready for another physical battle against Lai. The Canadian, however, gradually found his rhythm. Sen continued to stay in touch through the early stages, with the score reaching 8-8, but that was effectively where the momentum began to change.

From that point, Lai gained control of the rallies and began pulling away. Sen struggled to maintain the quality and consistency needed to stay with the Canadian, eventually surrendering the first game 14-21.

The second game proved considerably more damaging. Instead of responding strongly, Sen found himself under increasing pressure as Lai took command. The Canadian's confidence grew while Sen struggled to manufacture a sustained comeback. The Indian managed only seven points in the game, eventually losing 7-21.

The straight-games defeat underlined just how quickly the match had moved away from Sen.

Another early exit adds to Sen's concerns

Perhaps the biggest concern for Sen is the frequency of his early tournament exits.

The China Masters defeat marks his sixth Round of 32 exit in 2026. For a player who has consistently operated at the highest level of international badminton, the repeated inability to progress beyond the opening stages is becoming an increasingly significant issue.

The loss to Lai also highlighted concerns around unforced errors. Sen was unable to build sufficient pressure during the longer rallies and frequently surrendered points rather than forcing his opponent to earn them.

That lack of consistency has become a recurring theme around his recent performances.

Sen's challenge now is not simply about producing one strong tournament. He needs to find a way to sustain his level across multiple rounds and against different styles of opponents.

Victor Lai continues his dominance

For Lai, meanwhile, the result represented another successful outing against Sen.

The Canadian entered the contest as the higher-ranked player and reigning World Championships bronze medallist, and he once again proved a difficult opponent for the Indian.

The victory extended Lai's winning streak against Sen to three matches. Their previous encounters had already produced demanding battles, but this time the Canadian did not allow the contest to develop into another marathon.

Once Lai established control in the first game, Sen was unable to disrupt his rhythm. The result sends Lai into the next round while leaving Sen with another early exit to analyse.

Srikanth provides positive news for India

While Sen's campaign ended almost immediately, India did have a reason for optimism in men's singles. Veteran Kidambi Srikanth produced one of the notable results of the opening round, defeating Taiwan's world No. 21 Chi Yu Jen in straight games.

Srikanth, ranked 34th, won 21-16, 21-15 against his higher-ranked opponent. The victory was particularly significant given the difference in their rankings and provided India with a strong start from its experienced former world No. 1.

Srikanth now moves into the Round of 16, where he was due to face the winner of the Sen-Lai encounter. With Lai progressing, the Canadian becomes his next opponent. India will also have representation in mixed doubles, with Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto advancing to the second round.

Sen's next challenge is consistency

The China Masters result leaves Sen with more questions than answers. At his best, Sen has shown that he possesses the speed, athleticism and shot-making ability required to compete with the world's elite. But the biggest challenge at present appears to be translating those qualities into consistent performances deep into tournaments.

Six Round of 32 exits in a single season is a difficult record for a player carrying India's expectations in men's singles. The defeat to Lai was particularly stark because Sen never managed to turn his promising opening into sustained pressure.

For Sen, the immediate task is to move beyond the disappointment in Shenzhen and address the patterns that have repeatedly caused his campaigns to end early.

The talent is not in question. The consistency is.

And as the 2026 season moves forward, that consistency could prove to be the defining factor in determining whether Lakshya Sen can once again become a regular threat at the biggest badminton tournaments.
