French Olympian Prithika Pavade delivered one of the standout performances of Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7, guiding PBG Pune Jaguars to a 9-6 victory over UP Prometheans at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa on Sunday.
Making her UTT debut, Pavade capped an impressive afternoon by defeating two-time UTT Most Valuable Player Yangzi Liu in the decisive women's singles match. Recovering after dropping the opening game, the French paddler produced an outstanding comeback to hand Pune their first win of the season. The victory also marked an encouraging response from the Jaguars after a difficult start to the campaign, while UP Prometheans were left to rue missed opportunities despite opening the tie strongly.
Organised under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani, Butterfly UTT Season 7 features 42 players, including 14 Olympians, and continues to provide a world-class platform for Indian and international table tennis stars.
The tie began with UP Prometheans taking the early advantage through Germany's Ricardo Walther. Facing Egyptian star Omar Assar, Walther produced a composed display to secure a 2-1 victory. His consistency in the opening two games proved decisive, although Assar fought back to claim the final game and earn a valuable point for Pune.
With momentum initially favouring UP, Pune needed an immediate response. That came from India's Diya Chitale, who showcased impressive resilience against Sayali Wani.
After losing the opening game, Diya gradually found her rhythm and fought back to register a narrow 2-1 victory, levelling the contest and restoring confidence within the Jaguars' camp.
The pivotal moment of the tie arrived during the mixed doubles encounter. Snehit SFR and Prithika Pavade faced Ricardo Walther and Swastika Ghosh in a contest filled with tension and momentum swings. After dropping the opening game, the Pune pairing demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure.
Both the second and third games were decided on golden points, with Snehit and Pavade holding their nerve on both occasions to complete a dramatic comeback. The victory not only swung the overall tie in Pune's favour but also highlighted the chemistry the pair developed despite it being Pavade's first appearance in the league. Winning consecutive Golden Points against an experienced opposition proved to be one of the defining moments of the afternoon.
Indian paddler Snehit SFR continued his unbeaten run in Butterfly UTT Season 7 with another crucial victory. Taking on Sudhanshu Grover, Snehit once again showcased his ability to deliver in pressure situations. After comfortably winning the opening game, he lost momentum in the second before regrouping brilliantly to clinch the decider 11-9.
The victory handed Pune an important cushion going into the final match and further strengthened Snehit's reputation as one of the league's most consistent Indian performers this season. For his excellent display, Snehit was named both the Indian Player of the Tie and the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie.
With the tie still mathematically alive, all eyes turned to the final women's singles contest between Prithika Pavade and one of the league's biggest stars, Yangzi Liu. Yangzi, a two-time UTT MVP, looked in control after taking the opening game. However, Pavade refused to be intimidated. The French Olympian steadily raised the intensity of her play, attacking with greater confidence and controlling the rallies with her aggressive shot-making.
She claimed the second game convincingly before producing another composed performance in the decider to secure a memorable 2-1 victory. Defeating one of the most decorated players in Ultimate Table Tennis in her debut season instantly established Pavade as one of the players to watch this year. Her outstanding performance earned her the Foreign Player of the Tie award.
Meanwhile, Omar Assar's stunning winner during the third game of his singles match received the Bisleri Shot of the Tie honour.
Alongside the senior competition, the Dream UTT Juniors league continued to provide valuable exposure for India's emerging table tennis talent. Dabang Delhi TTC registered a convincing 6-3 victory over Ahmedabad APL Pipers in one of the day's junior fixtures. In the other encounter, U Mumba TT maintained their unbeaten record with a closely fought 5-4 win against HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades, continuing their impressive start to the grassroots competition.
The Dream UTT Juniors initiative remains an important part of Ultimate Table Tennis' long-term vision of strengthening the Indian table tennis ecosystem by providing competitive opportunities to young players.
For PBG Pune Jaguars, the victory could prove to be a turning point in their campaign. The performances of Snehit SFR and Prithika Pavade demonstrated the balance within the squad, while Diya Chitale's comeback victory highlighted the team's fighting spirit. Winning close matches and handling pressure situations effectively are qualities often associated with successful UTT teams, and Pune displayed both during Sunday's contest.
For UP Prometheans, despite positive performances from Ricardo Walther and moments of brilliance throughout the tie, narrow defeats in key matches ultimately proved costly. As Butterfly UTT Season 7 progresses, Pune will hope this confidence-boosting victory provides the momentum needed to climb the standings.
Later on Sunday, Ahmedabad APL Pipers were scheduled to take on Dempo Goa Challengers, with another important clash expected as teams continue their pursuit of a place in the knockout stages of one of the world's premier franchise-based table tennis leagues.
