Rajasthan United face Gokulam Kerala test as Cristaldi seeks first points in IFL 2026–27

Rajasthan United host two-time champions Gokulam Kerala in the IFL 2026–27 as Giuseppe Cristaldi targets his first points after an opening-day defeat.
After opening their campaign with a narrow home defeat to Sreenidi Deccan, Rajasthan United will look to convert promising attacking play into goals against a Gokulam Kerala side riding high after a dramatic opening-day victory.
Rajasthan United FC return to the Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium on Saturday with one clear objective: get their first points on the board in the Indian Football League (IFL) 2026–27. Standing in their way are two-time champions Gokulam Kerala FC, who arrive in Jaipur after beginning their campaign with a 3-2 victory over debutants Samaleswari SC.
The match, scheduled for a 4 PM IST kick-off on November 7, presents an early test for Rajasthan's new head coach Giuseppe Cristaldi. The Italian will be keen to ensure that his side's encouraging passages of play in their season opener translate into a more productive result.
Rajasthan United finished third in last season's league phase before ending the Championship Phase in fourth place with 18 points. They were among the more consistent sides in the competition, but their opening fixture this season ended in disappointment, with Sreenidi Deccan securing a 1-0 victory in Jaipur.
The scoreline did not fully reflect Rajasthan's response after a relatively quiet first half. Sreenidi enjoyed more possession early on, but the hosts increased their attacking intensity after the interval. P. Christopher Kamei struck the crossbar from distance, while Foday Trawally and Ricky Vanlalhriatsanga also came close to finding the net.
Instead, it was Sreenidi who made the decisive breakthrough through Nishu Kumar in the 66th minute. Diego Maurício had a late opportunity to rescue a point for Rajasthan, but goalkeeper Amrit Gope made two important saves to preserve the visitors' advantage.
The defeat highlighted a problem Cristaldi wants addressed quickly: Rajasthan created opportunities but lacked the finishing required to turn their attacking work into points.
“The main lesson from our opening game is simple: in football, if you do not score goals, you cannot win matches. People do not remember how well you played, the possession stats or the volume of chances created they only remember how many times you put the ball in the net,” Cristaldi said.
The coach has made it clear that one defeat will not prompt a change in philosophy. However, he expects greater precision in the final third and improved defensive concentration. Wingers Thomyo Shimray and Brijesh Giri will be important to Rajasthan's attacking plans, particularly with their ability to provide width and stretch the opposition defence.
Maurício and Rajasthan's attacking options
One of the key players Rajasthan will look towards is Brazilian forward Diego Maurício. The former Odisha FC striker won the Indian Super League Golden Boot in the 2022–23 season and brings considerable experience to the attack.
Maurício acknowledged that he had opportunities to score against Sreenidi but could not convert them. He believes the team has responded positively in training and is determined to make a difference in front of the home supporters.
“Tomorrow, whatever chances come my way, my focus is on putting the ball in the net and helping the team secure our first win in front of our home supporters,” he said. Spanish centre-back Adri Castellano will also be important at the other end, particularly against Gokulam's Brazilian attacking partnership.
Gokulam Kerala's opening-day victory offered a glimpse of their attacking potential. The Malabarians defeated Samaleswari SC 3-2 in Kozhikode, with Brazilian forward Crislan da Silva scoring twice, including a dramatic winner in the seventh minute of added time.
Crislan opened the scoring in the 16th minute after being set up by Victor da Silva. Victor then played a role in the second goal, laying off Naresh Singh's cross for Makan Chothe to finish before half-time. However, Gokulam's defensive organisation came under pressure late in the contest as Samaleswari scored twice to draw level. Crislan eventually settled the match with a header from Sachu Siby's cross in stoppage time.
The 34-year-old is now among the league's joint top scorers with two goals. Head coach Carlos Eduardo Parreira, who has known the forward for a long time, expects him to maintain that form.
Gokulam will also rely on Victor's creativity and Chothe's movement to trouble Rajasthan's defence. Their ability to combine in the final third could be particularly important against a home side that conceded from a decisive attacking move in its opening fixture.
Parreira, however, is not underestimating Rajasthan. He has watched their opening match and expects a committed performance from the hosts. Gokulam also face the challenge of beginning a run of four consecutive away fixtures, making a positive result in Jaipur valuable.
Naresh Singh, who faced Rajasthan last season, also recognises the difficulty of playing at the Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium. He believes Gokulam can take all three points if they execute their coach's plan.
Rajasthan will take confidence from their previous home meeting with Gokulam. Last season, the sides played out a goalless contest for 100 minutes before substitute Naoba Meitei scored in the 101st minute to secure a 1-0 victory for Rajasthan.
That result lifted Rajasthan to second place in the table at the time, but neither side can rely on past performances in a new campaign. For Cristaldi, the priority is clear: maintain the team's playing principles while improving their finishing and defensive details. For Parreira, it is about building on the opening win without allowing the late defensive lapses against Samaleswari to become a pattern.
Rajasthan have the home advantage and the motivation of opening their points account. Gokulam have the confidence of a winning start and a forward in Crislan who has already demonstrated his ability to deliver in decisive moments.
The contest could therefore hinge on which side is more efficient in front of the goal. Rajasthan have shown they can create opportunities; against Gokulam, they must make them count.
