FC Bengaluru United host Mohammedan SC in their maiden IFL home match on November 6. Both teams seek their first points of the 2026-27 season.

The IFL debutants return to Bengaluru looking to bounce back from a last-minute defeat, while Mohammedan SC aim to address their attacking shortcomings and register their first points of the season.

FC Bengaluru United will have an opportunity to make history on home soil when they host Mohammedan Sporting Club in their maiden Indian Football League (IFL) home fixture at the Bangalore Football Stadium on Friday, November 6.

The Matchweek 2 encounter brings together two teams searching for their first points of the 2026-27 campaign after suffering narrow 1-0 defeats on the opening weekend. For Bengaluru United, the occasion carries added significance as the club prepares to play its first-ever home match in the IFL following promotion to the competition for the first time in its history.

Both sides will be keen to avoid another frustrating result, but the hosts will have the additional motivation of delivering a performance in front of their home supporters.

FC Bengaluru United earned promotion to the IFL after finishing runners-up in the 2025-26 I-League 2 season. Their first outing in the competition, however, ended in disappointment as they went down 0-1 to Dempo Sports Club in Fatorda. Despite the defeat, the Karnataka side showed considerable defensive discipline. They frustrated Dempo for 97 minutes, with goalkeeper Manjunath Hirekurbar and defenders Daniel and Abdul Hannan playing important roles in keeping the opposition at bay.

Ribhav Sardesai and Lalramdinsanga Ralte provided energy and protection in midfield, while Russian forward Marat Tarek offered an attacking outlet with his runs behind the opposition defence. The late goal conceded against Dempo was a particularly difficult ending for head coach Nallappan Mohanraj, who felt his team had done enough to earn a point.

“Definitely it was a disappointing end for us in Goa because a fair result would have been a point, especially after we dominated the game without the ball for 96 minutes before losing concentration on a set-piece,” Mohanraj said.

The former India international believes the experience will serve as an important lesson for his players. With the first home fixture now approaching, his focus is on converting the team's defensive resilience into a positive result.

“Mohammedan is a very good, historic club coming back from the ISL, and playing them at home is a great opportunity for us to bounce back. The boys are motivated and prepared to go out there and give more than 100 per cent for the three points,” he added.

Defender Abdul Hannan also underlined the importance of the occasion, describing the opportunity to play in front of Bengaluru's home supporters as a special moment after the club's efforts to reach the IFL.

Mohammedan SC seek greater attacking efficiency

Mohammedan SC arrive in Bengaluru looking to recover from their opening-day defeat against Shillong Lajong FC. The Kolkata club, which has returned to the IFL following its stint in the Indian Super League, currently sits eighth in the early standings. The Black and White Brigade put up a determined defensive display in Kolkata, keeping Shillong Lajong at bay for most of the contest. However, substitute Nelson Rymbai scored in the 90th minute to hand the visitors a 1-0 victory.

Goalkeeper Deka was among Mohammedan's standout performers, making eight saves, including an important stop in the 69th minute. The defensive effort provided encouragement, but the team struggled to convert its opportunities at the other end.

Head coach Saheed Ramon has identified finishing in the final third as an area requiring immediate improvement. “In our first match, the boys were very compact and did well defensively, but we missed clear chances that we should have converted. We are working to improve in the final third and cut out the late mistakes that cost us last time,” Ramon said.

Mohammedan will also have to manage the absence of Thokchom Adison Singh and Israfil Dewan for the trip. Ramon, however, expressed confidence in the depth of his squad.

Senior defender Hira Mondal, who has recovered from minor cramps, believes the additional training days have helped the team settle into the coach's system after limited preparation before the opening fixture.

Friday's contest will be the first meeting between FC Bengaluru United and Mohammedan SC in the Indian Football League. Their only previous encounter came in the group stage of the 2021 Durand Cup in Kalyani on September 14, when Bengaluru United recorded a 2-0 victory.

Five years later, the two clubs meet again in a different competition, with both seeking to establish momentum early in the season. For Bengaluru United, the objective is clear: make their first home appearance in the IFL memorable by securing three points. Mohammedan, meanwhile, will look to combine the defensive organisation they displayed against Shillong Lajong with greater attacking precision.

With both teams coming off narrow opening-weekend defeats, the contest could be decided by which side manages the crucial moments more effectively.
