Ranchi Welcomes Durand Cup Trophy Tour as City Gears Up for Historic Hosting Debut

Ranchi's football journey reached a historic milestone on Saturday as the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup Trophy Tour arrived in the Jharkhand capital, officially ushering in the countdown to the city's debut as a host venue for India's oldest football tournament.

The arrival of the tournament's three iconic trophies the Durand Cup, the President's Cup, and the Simla Trophy—was celebrated with a grand ceremony at the Kerketta Auditorium, Dipatoli Military Station, organised by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army. The event marked another significant step in the Durand Cup's continued expansion across India and highlighted Ranchi's emergence as an important destination on the country's football map.

The celebrations were led by Shri Sudivya Kumar, Hon'ble Minister for Tourism, Art, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Jharkhand, while Major General Sajjan Singh Maan, General Officer Commanding, Combat IBG 23, attended as the guest of honour.

Senior officials from the Government of Jharkhand, the Indian Army, participating clubs, tournament organisers and members of the football fraternity also attended the event.

For the first time in the tournament's 138-year history, Ranchi will serve as one of the host cities for the prestigious competition, joining established football centres such as Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong and Imphal.

Addressing the gathering, Sports Minister Sudivya Kumar described the occasion as a proud moment for Jharkhand and invited football fans to embrace the tournament.

"It is a matter of great pride and immense pleasure to welcome the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup to Ranchi. We eagerly look forward to the opening match on July 26, which will be graced by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Ranchi is privileged to host some of India's leading football clubs along with an international team, and I am confident football lovers will witness an exciting tournament," he said.

The Minister also thanked the Government of Jharkhand and the Indian Army for making the initiative possible while extending a warm welcome to all participating teams and visiting supporters.

The ceremony was more than just a formal unveiling of trophies. It celebrated the rich heritage of both the Durand Cup and the state of Jharkhand.

The programme featured a special film tracing the remarkable legacy of the Durand Cup and showcased the ceremonial unveiling of the tournament's trophies at Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier this month. Traditional cultural performances added colour to the occasion, with Santhali, Chhau and Bhangra dances reflecting the state's diverse cultural identity.

The highlight came when the three iconic trophies were ceremonially displayed before dignitaries and football enthusiasts, officially signalling Ranchi's entry into the prestigious list of Durand Cup host cities.

Following the ceremony, the Trophy Tour transformed into a vibrant public celebration as the three trophies travelled through the heart of Ranchi. The convoy passed through Kokar, Lalpur Chowk, Karamtoli Road, Kutchery Road and Sujata Chowk, making several scheduled stops along the way. At locations including Nucleus Mall, Morabadi Ground and Firayalal Chowk, football fans gathered in large numbers to catch a glimpse of the historic trophies.

Cultural performances organised by the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, along with performances by Army bands, turned the roadshow into a festive celebration that brought the tournament closer to the local community.

The enthusiastic response highlighted the growing excitement surrounding Ranchi's first experience of hosting one of India's most prestigious football competitions.

Speaking during the event, Major General Sajjan Singh Maan highlighted the significance of expanding the tournament into Ranchi after the successful hosting of matches in Jamshedpur last year.

He said the move reflects the organisers' commitment to taking elite football to emerging centres while strengthening Jharkhand's long-standing football culture. The inclusion of Birsa Munda Football Stadium as a Durand Cup venue, he added, offers football lovers across the state the opportunity to witness top-level domestic and international football on home soil.

Tournament Nodal Officer Colonel Hem Chandra echoed those sentiments, describing Ranchi's inclusion as a landmark moment for the city. He expressed confidence that the capital would successfully host clubs from the Indian Super League, Services teams and international participants while showcasing Jharkhand's passion for football.

While the Trophy Tour has generated considerable excitement, attention will soon shift to the football itself. Ranchi will host all Group C fixtures at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium, featuring an attractive mix of clubs and Services teams. The group includes Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, Sporting Club Delhi, the Indian Air Force Football Team, and Defenders FC of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces, who will make their Durand Cup debut.

Ranchi's first-ever Durand Cup match is scheduled for July 26, when Jamshedpur FC face Defenders FC.

The city will continue to host Group C matches until August 13, before staging one of the tournament's quarter-finals on August 16, ensuring local fans get an opportunity to witness knockout football as well.

Established in 1888, the Durand Cup remains the world's third-oldest surviving football competition and continues to play a unique role in Indian football by bringing together the country's leading clubs, Services teams and international participants on one platform.

The addition of Ranchi as a host city reflects the tournament's broader vision of expanding its footprint beyond traditional football centres and taking the game to emerging sporting regions.

Following its successful stop in Ranchi, the Trophy Tour will continue to Gumla on July 20, before moving to Kolkata on July 22 ahead of the tournament opener.

The 135th IndianOil Durand Cup will be held from July 25 to August 23, featuring 24 teams competing across 43 matches in five host cities. The tournament begins with the iconic Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC on July 25 and concludes with the final at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on August 23.

For Ranchi, however, the excitement has already begun. With the Trophy Tour now complete and the countdown underway, the city is ready to script its own chapter in the rich history of the Durand Cup.
