India's Sahaja Yamalapalli produced a dramatic semifinal comeback to reach her first ITF final of 2026 before finishing runner-up at the W35 Wichita tournament in the USA.

India's Sahaja Yamalapalli produced one of the most memorable comebacks of her season en route to a runner-up finish at the ITF W35 Wichita tournament in the United States.

The Indian, ranked World No. 360, fought back from the brink of defeat in the semifinals, saving a match point and winning five consecutive games in the deciding set to reach her first professional singles final of 2026. While her impressive run ultimately ended with a loss to American Reese Brantmeier in the title clash, the tournament marked an encouraging week for one of India's leading women's tennis players.

For Sahaja, the Wichita campaign was less about the final result and more about the consistency, resilience and high-quality tennis she displayed throughout the event.

Entering the tournament as the fourth seed, Sahaja opened her campaign with a straight-sets victory over American wildcard Victoria Osuigwe. The Indian remained in control throughout the contest and secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory to move into the second round. The win provided an ideal start and allowed her to settle into the conditions quickly.

As the tournament progressed, Sahaja's level continued to rise. She navigated the early rounds confidently and entered the quarterfinals looking increasingly comfortable on court.

One of Sahaja's most impressive performances came in the quarterfinals against Russia's Ekaterina Khayrutdinova. The Russian arrived in good form and was ranked World No. 509, but Sahaja gave her little opportunity to settle into the match. Displaying excellent control from the baseline and consistent serving, the Indian dominated proceedings from start to finish.

She completed a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory to secure a place in the semifinals. The manner of the win suggested that Sahaja was beginning to peak at the right time and looked increasingly capable of challenging for the title.

If the quarterfinal showcased her tennis, the semifinal showcased her fighting spirit. Facing Kazakhstan's Yekaterina Dmitrichenko, Sahaja found herself involved in one of the most dramatic matches of the tournament. The Indian lost the opening set 4-6 but responded strongly to claim the second set 6-4 and force a decider.

The final set appeared to be slipping away. Dmitrichenko moved into a commanding position and even earned a match point that would have ended Sahaja's run.

However, the Indian refused to surrender. Showing remarkable composure under pressure, she saved the match point and began mounting an extraordinary comeback.

What followed was a stunning sequence of five consecutive games. Point by point, Sahaja turned the momentum in her favour, frustrating her opponent and growing in confidence with every rally. From the edge of defeat, she surged to a 7-5 victory in the deciding set, sealing one of the most impressive wins of her season.

The comeback secured her place in the final and highlighted the mental strength that has become one of her biggest assets on the professional circuit.

The victory over Dmitrichenko sent Sahaja into her first singles final of the year. Having spent much of the season searching for consistency, the run to the championship match represented a significant step forward. The result also guaranteed valuable ranking points that could help improve her position in the WTA rankings in the coming weeks. For Indian women's tennis, Sahaja's progress was another encouraging sign.

The Hyderabad-based player has steadily established herself among India's top professionals and continues to build experience on the international circuit.

Awaiting Sahaja in the final was American Reese Brantmeier, one of the standout performers in US collegiate tennis. Fresh off a highly successful season with the University of North Carolina, Brantmeier entered the final in excellent form and carried that confidence onto the court. The American started aggressively and quickly established control of the match.

Despite Sahaja's efforts, Brantmeier consistently dictated play from the baseline and limited the Indian's opportunities to gain momentum.

She eventually secured the title with a 6-4, 6-0 victory. While the scoreline was one-sided, it should not diminish the significance of Sahaja's achievements during the week.

Brantmeier's victory earned her a second professional singles title, while Sahaja finished as runner-up after her deepest run of the season.

Although the tournament ended one match short of a trophy, Wichita represented a highly positive week for the Indian. Reaching her first final of 2026, defeating quality opposition and producing a memorable match-point-saving comeback are achievements that should provide considerable confidence moving forward.

The run also demonstrated her ability to compete consistently at ITF W35 level, an important factor as she looks to continue climbing the rankings.

Most importantly, Sahaja showed resilience. Saving a match point in a semifinal and turning the match around under immense pressure is the kind of experience that often proves invaluable in a player's development.

The title may have gone to Brantmeier, but Sahaja Yamalapalli leaves Wichita with valuable ranking points, renewed confidence and proof that her game is moving in the right direction as the season progresses.
