Sumit Nagal Stuns Second Seed Zdenek Kolar to Reach First Challenger Quarterfinal of 2026

India No.1 Sumit Nagal defeated World No.162 Zdenek Kolar in straight sets to reach the ATP Challenger Chisinau quarterfinals in Moldova.
Sumit Nagal produced one of his best performances of the season to upset second seed Zdenek Kolar and book his place in the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger 100 event in Chisinau, Moldova.
The Indian No.1 defeated the Czech World No.162 6-4, 7-6(4) in the Round of 16, registering his best-ranked win of the 2026 season and reaching his first ATP Challenger quarterfinal of the year. For Nagal, currently ranked 282 in the ATP rankings, the result represents an important momentum shift after a difficult start to the season.
Coming into the match, Kolar was the clear favourite on paper. The Czech player arrived in Chisinau as the tournament’s second seed and ranked 120 places above Nagal. But once the match began, the Indian showed greater composure during the crucial moments.
Nagal started aggressively from the baseline, forcing Kolar into longer rallies and repeatedly targeting the Czech player’s movement with heavy topspin and deep returns. The opening set remained tight initially, but Nagal gradually gained control through his consistency in rallies and strong returning. Despite not hitting a single ace in the entire match, the Indian managed to dominate several service games through placement and baseline control rather than outright power.
He eventually secured the opening set 6-4 after capitalising on one of the key break opportunities.
The second set turned into a much tougher battle. Kolar began attacking more freely and attempted to increase the pace during shorter rallies, while Nagal had to constantly manage pressure on serve. The Indian’s serving numbers reflected both the positives and concerns within his game.
While Nagal landed an impressive 70 percent of first serves and won 67 percent of points behind them, he also committed nine double faults during the contest. Those double faults repeatedly gave Kolar opportunities to stay alive in the match. However, Nagal compensated through strong returning and excellent resilience during longer exchanges.
One of the most important aspects of the victory was his ability to stay mentally composed during the closing stages of the second set. After the set moved into a tiebreak, Nagal looked far calmer than the higher-ranked Czech player. He controlled the bigger points intelligently and closed out the breaker 7-4 to seal a straight-sets victory.
This result carries extra significance because Nagal had struggled for rhythm over the last several months. The Indian had not won back-to-back matches since October 2025 and had been searching for consistency throughout the early part of the 2026 season. Reaching the quarterfinals in Chisinau therefore becomes an important confidence boost at a crucial stage of the year. It is also his first quarterfinal appearance of 2026 at Challenger level.
For a player who had climbed as high as World No.68 in 2024, the last year has been a challenging period filled with ranking drops, inconsistent results and physical struggles.
Victories like this are exactly what Nagal needs if he wants to steadily rebuild his ranking and return closer to the ATP Top 100 conversation.
Although Nagal won in straight sets, the match itself remained closely contested statistically. Kolar actually won a slightly higher percentage of second-serve points, while both players created multiple break-point opportunities. Nagal converted five of his ten break points compared to Kolar’s four conversions from seven opportunities.
The Indian also won 36 receiving points across the match compared to Kolar’s 32, reflecting how effective his returning game proved throughout the contest. Most importantly, Nagal looked sharper during the pressure moments. That proved decisive in both sets.
Quarterfinal Clash Against Stefanos Sakellaridis
Nagal will next face Stefanos Sakellaridis in the quarterfinals. The Greek player advanced after his Round of 16 opponent Alex Martinez retired from their match. Sakellaridis, currently ranked 197 in the ATP rankings, presents another difficult challenge for Nagal. Standing at 6’6”, the Greek possesses a significantly stronger serve and greater reach compared to Kolar. That matchup will likely test Nagal’s returning abilities even further.
However, the Indian will take confidence from his current form and momentum after eliminating the tournament’s second seed.
Nagal’s victory also comes as an encouraging development for Indian men’s singles tennis overall. While Indian tennis has historically produced strong doubles players, sustained success in singles at Challenger and ATP level has remained difficult in recent years. As India’s top-ranked singles player, Nagal continues carrying much of that responsibility.
Performances like this once again underline the quality he still possesses when fully confident physically and mentally. At 28 years old, Nagal still has enough experience and competitive hunger to rebuild his ranking trajectory.
And if he can continue stringing together wins like this in the Challenger circuit, a return toward the higher ATP levels may not be far away.
