Sumit Nagal Begins Moldova Open Campaign With Clinical Straight-Sets Victory

India’s Sumit Nagal started his ATP Challenger Moldova Open 2026 campaign with a straight-sets win over Uzbekistan’s Sergey Fomin.
Sumit Nagal made a confident start to his campaign at the Moldova Open with a composed straight-sets victory over Uzbekistan’s Sergey Fomin in the opening round of the ATP Challenger 100 event in Chisinau.
The Indian tennis star, currently ranked World No. 282, defeated Fomin 6-4, 6-2 to book his place in the Round of 16, where a much tougher challenge now awaits against second seed Zdenek Kolar of Czechia.
For Nagal, the win represented an important step in what has been a rebuilding phase over the last several months after a difficult period on the ATP circuit.
Facing World No. 294 Sergey Fomin, Nagal entered the match as a slight favourite on paper, but the contest still carried importance considering both players were separated by only a few ranking spots. The Indian started steadily, using his trademark heavy baseline game to dictate rallies early. Fomin attempted to stay aggressive during the opening exchanges, but Nagal’s consistency from the backcourt gradually began forcing errors from the Uzbek player.
The first set remained competitive initially, with both players holding serve through the early stages. However, Nagal managed to secure the crucial break late in the set before calmly serving it out 6-4. That breakthrough completely shifted the momentum.
Once ahead, Nagal looked significantly more relaxed and confident in the second set, where he elevated the intensity of his groundstrokes and controlled rallies more comfortably. The Indian broke serve multiple times during the second set and wrapped up the contest 6-2 without facing major resistance.
While the result may not appear massive from a ranking perspective, it still holds significance for Nagal at this stage of his career. The 28-year-old has spent the last couple of seasons navigating injuries, ranking fluctuations and the grind of returning consistently to ATP Challenger-level competition after previously breaking into the world’s top 100.
Nagal reached a career-high ranking of World No. 68 in 2024 and became India’s leading singles player during that period. However, maintaining rankings at ATP Tour level has remained challenging, particularly because of injuries and inconsistent scheduling. Victories like this are therefore crucial not just for ranking points but also for rebuilding momentum and rhythm.
The level of difficulty will rise sharply in the next round. Nagal is now set to face Czech second seed Zdenek Kolar, currently ranked World No. 162.
Kolar advanced after defeating Moldova’s Ilya Snitari 6-4, 6-3 in his opening-round match. The Czech player brings significantly greater ATP Challenger experience and enters the contest as the higher-ranked player. Kolar has consistently competed at Challenger level over the past few seasons and remains a dangerous opponent on slower surfaces.
For Nagal, the matchup will likely depend heavily on baseline consistency and service efficiency. The Indian’s game traditionally thrives when he is able to dictate longer rallies through heavy topspin and physical intensity from the baseline. Against Kolar, however, Nagal will also need to serve well and avoid giving away cheap points during shorter exchanges.
Nagal’s campaign in Moldova once again highlights the importance of the ATP Challenger circuit for Indian singles players. Unlike doubles, where India continues to maintain strong representation at Grand Slams and ATP events, Indian men’s singles players still face a steep climb internationally. The Challenger Tour effectively becomes the most important pathway for players looking to improve rankings, gain consistency and eventually return to ATP Tour-level tournaments.
For Nagal specifically, the objective now is not only to regain ranking momentum but also to re-establish himself consistently inside the top 200 before targeting another push towards Grand Slam qualification events.
Despite producing talented players over the years, Indian men’s singles tennis continues searching for sustained global consistency. Nagal remains the country’s biggest singles hope currently because of his experience competing against elite-level opposition and his previous success on the ATP Tour. His victory over Alexander Bublik at the Australian Open a few years ago remains one of Indian tennis’ biggest recent singles highlights internationally.
But the challenge now is sustaining that level over longer periods.
That is often the hardest part in professional tennis especially for players operating outside the financial and infrastructural advantages enjoyed by athletes from traditional tennis powerhouses.
The performance against Fomin nevertheless offered several encouraging signs. Nagal looked physically comfortable, moved well around the court and maintained composure during key moments all important indicators for a player trying to regain momentum. Most importantly, he avoided the kind of prolonged lapses that have occasionally troubled him in tighter Challenger-level matches.
The contest against Kolar will provide a much clearer indication of where Nagal currently stands competitively. A victory over the second seed would represent a major boost both in terms of confidence and ranking progress.
For now, though, the Indian has done exactly what was required start strong, settle quickly into tournament rhythm and keep his campaign alive in Moldova.
