Dhakshineswar Suresh Stuns Former Top-100 Player Liam Broady at Brownsburg Challenger

India’s Dhakshineswar Suresh produced one of the biggest wins of his young professional career at the ATP 75 Brownsburg Challenger in Indiana, defeating former world No. 93 Liam Broady 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round.

Ranked 393rd in the ATP rankings, Suresh entered the main draw as a qualifier and then continued his impressive run by overcoming Broady, who was ranked as high as No. 93 in September 2023 and entered the match ranked around the 200 mark. The 26-year-old Indian now has another significant challenge ahead. He will face Japan's Rei Sakamoto, ranked No. 165 in the world, in the second round.

For Suresh, however, the significance of his Brownsburg campaign goes beyond one main-draw victory. He has already had to navigate two qualifying rounds before defeating an experienced opponent who has spent considerable time competing at the highest level of the professional game.

Suresh began his Brownsburg campaign in the qualifying draw, where he immediately showed the level of tennis that would eventually carry him into the main competition. In his opening qualifying match, the Indian defeated American wildcard Sebastian Godoy 6-3, 6-3. The second qualifying round presented a considerably tougher challenge, with Suresh facing 11th seed Aidan Kim.

Rather than allowing the pressure of the higher-seeded opponent to affect him, Suresh produced another composed performance, winning 7-6(2), 7-6(4). Two tight sets were decided in his favour, sending him into the main draw and setting up a first-round meeting with Broady. It meant Suresh had already played two competitive matches before stepping onto court for his main-draw opener.

Broady presented a difficult stylistic challenge. The British left-hander has built his career around a strong return game and an ability to trouble opponents who rely heavily on their serve. Suresh nevertheless maintained his composure and executed his game plan effectively.

The Indian took the opening set 6-3, establishing control early and forcing Broady to play from behind. The second set was significantly tighter. Broady attempted to extend the contest, but Suresh remained disciplined at the key moments. He eventually closed out the set 7-5, completing a straight-set victory and securing his place in the second round.

The 6-3, 7-5 result was particularly significant given the difference in experience and ranking between the two players. Suresh entered the contest ranked 393rd, while Broady was around the 199-202 range depending on the latest ranking reference. Broady has also previously reached the ATP Top 100, making the result an important scalp for the Indian.

Suresh's reward is a second-round meeting with Rei Sakamoto, another player ranked considerably higher than him. The 20-year-old Japanese player is currently ranked around No. 165 and arrives in the second round after surviving an extraordinary three-set battle against France's Ugo Blanchet.

Sakamoto defeated Blanchet 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 7-6(3) after saving two match points. The result highlights the level of competition Suresh will face next.

Sakamoto has already demonstrated his ability to survive high-pressure moments, particularly in a match that featured three tie-breaks. For Suresh, the challenge will be to reproduce the level of consistency that helped him overcome Broady while managing the physical demands of another difficult contest.

The Brownsburg run represents another positive development for Suresh, who is attempting to establish himself at the Challenger level. The progression from qualifying to the second round is especially encouraging because it has required him to win three consecutive matches against players with different styles.

First came Godoy in qualifying, followed by the seeded Aidan Kim. Broady then represented the biggest test in the main draw, with his experience and return game creating a potentially difficult matchup. Suresh handled all three challenges.

The next one is Sakamoto, who has already demonstrated his ability to win tight matches. For Suresh, the objective will be straightforward: continue the same process that has taken him this far. A victory over Sakamoto would send him into the quarter-finals and give him another opportunity to add a significant name to his list of wins. More importantly, it would extend a breakthrough week that has already seen him move from the qualifying draw to the last 16 of an ATP Challenger tournament.

At 26, Suresh is still searching for his place within the increasingly competitive professional tennis landscape. His Brownsburg campaign shows what is possible when he combines consistency with the ability to perform under pressure.

The win over Broady is the headline result for now.

But with Sakamoto waiting in the second round, Suresh has little time to celebrate. Another opportunity to test himself against a higher-ranked opponent is already here and another victory could turn an impressive Challenger campaign into a genuine breakthrough.
