Satwik-Chirag End Two-Year Wait, Create History with Singapore Open 2026 Title

Indian badminton stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are champions once again.
The former World No. 1 men's doubles pair ended a frustrating two-year wait for a major title by capturing the Singapore Open 2026 crown on Sunday, defeating Indonesia's Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Fajar Alfian in a hard-fought final. After dropping the opening game, the Indian duo produced a remarkable comeback to prevail 18-21, 21-17, 21-16 and lift their first title since 2024.
The victory not only ended a drought of nearly two years but also reaffirmed Satwik and Chirag's status among the world's elite men's doubles pairs. Most importantly, it signalled that one of badminton's most feared partnerships is firmly back among the biggest contenders on the international circuit.
For a pair that has spent years rewriting Indian badminton history, the wait for another title had felt unusually long. Since winning the Thailand Open in 2024, Satwik and Chirag had come close on several occasions but were unable to convert those opportunities into trophies. Injuries, inconsistent form and the relentless competition at the highest level meant that a title continued to elude them.
That changed in Singapore. The triumph ended a wait of approximately 742 days for a BWF World Tour title and gave the pair their first major championship success in two years.
It was also their first BWF Super 750 title since their memorable French Open triumph in 2024. For two players who have consistently set high standards for themselves, Sunday's victory was a reward for persistence and resilience.
What made the title even more impressive was the quality of opposition they had to overcome. The Indian pair did not enjoy an easy draw.
In the semifinals, Satwik and Chirag stunned reigning world champions and World No. 1 Korean pair Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae, securing their first-ever victory over the dominant duo. That result alone was considered one of their finest performances of the season.
However, they still had one more challenge waiting in the final Facing Indonesian pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, the Indians found themselves under pressure after losing the opening game 18-21.
The Indonesians controlled key rallies early on and appeared poised to continue their momentum. Instead, Satwik and Chirag responded like champions.
The second game showcased exactly why the Indian duo has been one of the most successful partnerships in world badminton over the past decade. Rather than allowing frustration to creep in, they remained patient and gradually increased the pressure. Their attacking play became sharper, their defence more solid and their control at the net significantly improved.
The reward came with a 21-17 win that levelled the match and shifted momentum decisively. Once the contest entered a deciding game, the confidence was clearly with the Indians. Satwik's powerful smashes and Chirag's relentless presence at the front court repeatedly troubled the Indonesian pair.
The Indians established an early advantage and never looked back. A 21-16 victory in the decider sealed the title and sparked celebrations from the Indian camp.
The triumph carries added significance because of what it means for Indian badminton history. Satwik and Chirag became the first Indian doubles pair ever to win the Singapore Open. The tournament has previously been won by only three Indian players. Saina Nehwal was the first Indian champion in Singapore, followed by PV Sindhu and B Sai Praneeth.
Now, Satwik and Chirag have joined that distinguished list while also becoming the first Indian doubles champions at the event. The achievement further strengthens their legacy as India's most successful men's doubles combination.
The Singapore Open title also marks another major milestone in the pair's career. It is their 10th BWF World Tour title, a remarkable achievement for a partnership that has consistently broken new ground for Indian doubles badminton. Over the years, they have won Commonwealth Games gold, Asian Games gold, Super 1000 titles and multiple World Tour events.
The Singapore Open trophy now adds another prestigious title to an already impressive collection. What makes the milestone even more special is the manner in which it was achieved. Defeating the World No. 1 pair in the semifinals and a top Indonesian combination in the final is the type of run that demonstrates championship quality.
The timing of the victory could not be better. With major tournaments still to come this season, the title provides a huge confidence boost for Satwik and Chirag. For months, there had been questions about whether the pair could return to their best level after a difficult period.
The answer now appears clear. The chemistry remains intact, the hunger remains strong and the ability to beat the world's best pairs remains unquestioned.
After two years of waiting, the drought is finally over. The Singapore Open belongs to Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, and with this victory, Indian badminton's "Brothers of Destruction" have announced that they are once again ready to challenge for the biggest titles in world badminton.
