Satwik-Chirag, PV Sindhu Lead India’s Charge at Indonesia Open 2026 After Singapore Success

India's leading badminton stars will look to build on an encouraging week in Singapore as the Indonesia Open 2026 gets underway in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The spotlight will firmly be on Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who arrive at the prestigious Super 1000 event riding a wave of confidence after ending their two-year BWF World Tour title drought at the Singapore Open. Joining them in India's challenge will be two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, former World Championships medallist Lakshya Sen, veteran HS Prannoy and mixed doubles pair Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, all of whom produced notable performances in Singapore last week.
As the third Super 1000 event of the 2026 BWF World Tour season, the Indonesia Open represents one of the most important tournaments outside the World Championships and Olympic Games, attracting the strongest players from across the globe.
Few Indian players will enter Jakarta with more momentum than Satwik and Chirag. The former world No. 1 pair finally returned to the winners' circle last week, capturing the Singapore Open title and ending a wait of more than two years for a BWF World Tour crown. Their title run was particularly impressive.
The Indian duo defeated reigning world champions Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae in the semifinals before overcoming Indonesia's Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Fikri in the final. After losing the opening game, Satwik and Chirag fought back brilliantly to win 18-21, 21-17, 21-16 and become the first Indian doubles pair to win the Singapore Open.
The victory also reaffirmed their status among the world's elite men's doubles combinations.
With confidence restored and form returning, the Indians will now look to carry that momentum into Jakarta, where another deep run could significantly boost their standing ahead of the World Championships later this year.
India's other men's doubles representatives will be MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan.
PV Sindhu also heads to Indonesia with renewed optimism. The former world champion produced arguably her best badminton of the season in Singapore, registering impressive victories over Indonesia's world No. 6 Putri Kusuma Wardani and Japan's Riko Gunji before running into world No. 1 and reigning Olympic champion An Se-young in the quarterfinals.
Although Sindhu lost to the Korean superstar, her performances throughout the week suggested that her game is moving in the right direction after a challenging period. Currently ranked world No. 12, Sindhu faces the prospect of another early showdown with An Se-young, with the two players potentially set to meet in the second round.
If the Indian can navigate the opening stages successfully, she could once again challenge the world's best. India's women's singles contingent will also include rising stars Unnati Hooda and Malvika Bansod.
Both players continue to gain valuable experience at the highest level and will view the Indonesia Open as another opportunity to test themselves against elite opposition.
India's hopes in men's singles will be spearheaded by Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy. Lakshya reached the quarterfinals in Singapore before suffering a three-game defeat to Japan's Koki Watanabe. Despite the loss, the All England finalist displayed encouraging signs and will be aiming to convert those performances into a deeper run in Jakarta.
Prannoy also impressed last week. The experienced Indian pulled off one of the standout upsets of the tournament when he defeated Indonesia's world No. 5 Jonatan Christie in the opening round.
While he could not maintain that momentum throughout the week, the victory demonstrated that Prannoy remains capable of troubling the world's top players. India's men's singles lineup is completed by Ayush Shetty and former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth.
Mixed doubles pair Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto enjoyed a breakthrough week in Singapore, reaching the semifinals of a Super 750 event. Their impressive run further established them as India's leading mixed doubles pair and highlighted their growing consistency on the international circuit. However, Jakarta presents an immediate challenge.
The Indian duo have been handed a difficult first-round match against Malaysia's world champions Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei. It is one of the toughest opening-round assignments possible, but recent performances suggest Dhruv and Tanisha are capable of competing with the sport's biggest names. India's other mixed doubles representatives will be Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde.
One of the most anticipated storylines for Indian badminton fans will be the return of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand. The women's doubles pair will compete in their first BWF World Tour event since the Swiss Open in March after Treesa's recovery from injury. The duo have been India's most successful women's doubles combination in recent years, and their return adds significant strength to the country's campaign. With several months remaining before the World Championships, Jakarta provides an ideal opportunity to regain match fitness and rhythm.
Following the success of Satwik-Chirag in Singapore and encouraging performances from several other Indian players, expectations heading into the Indonesia Open are understandably high. The tournament's Super 1000 status ensures a world-class field and an extremely demanding draw, but India's leading shuttlers have already shown they can compete with the best.
Whether it is Satwik-Chirag attempting to continue their title-winning run, Sindhu searching for a return to the latter stages of major tournaments, or Lakshya and Prannoy chasing consistency, Indian badminton enters Jakarta with momentum, confidence and plenty to play for.
