Indian youngster Sayali Wani announced herself on the biggest domestic stage with a remarkable comeback victory over Manika Batra, guiding UP Prometheans to a thrilling 8-7 win against Ahmedabad APL Pipers in Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 Powered by ChatGPT at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa on Tuesday.

In one of the most dramatic finishes of the season, Sayali saved three successive tie points before edging India's highest-ranked women's paddler on Golden Point to hand UP their first victory of the campaign. The memorable win capped a tie that swung repeatedly throughout the evening and highlighted the competitive depth that has made UTT one of the premier table tennis leagues in the world.

Organised under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani, Butterfly UTT Season 7 features 42 players, including 14 Olympians, while continuing its commitment to developing Indian table tennis through elite competition and grassroots initiatives.

With the tie finely balanced heading into the final women's singles match, all eyes were on the contest between experienced Indian star Manika Batra and the young Sayali Wani. The opening game suggested Manika was heading towards a routine victory as she dominated proceedings to win 11-5. Her superior experience and control appeared to have placed Ahmedabad within touching distance of victory.

However, Sayali refused to surrender.

Trailing 3-7 in the second game, the youngster fought back with impressive composure to reel off crucial points and claim the game 11-8, forcing the contest into a deciding third game.

The victory not only secured the match for UP Prometheans but also marked one of the biggest wins of Sayali's career. The dramatic finale was fitting for a contest that remained closely fought from the opening match. Ahmedabad APL Pipers made the brighter start as Payas Jain recovered from losing the first game to defeat Sudhanshu Grover 2-1.

The momentum remained with Ahmedabad when Austrian Olympian Sofia Polcanova overcame two-time Butterfly UTT Most Valuable Player Yangzi Liu in another hard-fought three-game encounter. Facing an early deficit, UP Prometheans responded strongly in the mixed doubles.

The pairing of Ricardo Walther and Swastika Ghosh delivered one of the performances of the evening, defeating Payas Jain and Sofia Polcanova in straight games. Despite the 3-0 scoreline, every game was fiercely contested, with UP winning two Golden Points to swing the momentum decisively in their favour. Their victory transformed the complexion of the tie and gave UP a valuable lead heading into the final two matches.

With UP holding the advantage, Ahmedabad needed a response from Adrien Rassenfosse in the men's singles. The Belgian delivered under pressure, defeating Ricardo Walther 2-1 in another absorbing contest. After taking the opening game comfortably, Rassenfosse looked set for a straight-games victory before Walther fought back to claim the second game. The Belgian, however, regained control in the decider to level the overall tie and ensure the outcome would be decided by the final women's singles match.

His victory set the stage for Sayali's unforgettable performance against Manika.

Sayali Wani's heroic comeback earned her the Indian Player of the Tie award after her decisive contribution. Swastika Ghosh was recognised as the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie, rewarding her outstanding performance in the mixed doubles alongside Ricardo Walther. Walther was named the Foreign Player of the Tie, while Adrien Rassenfosse claimed the Bisleri Shot of the Tie honour following his impressive victory in the men's singles.

The awards reflected the quality of performances across both teams in one of the most closely contested ties of the season.

Earlier in the day, the Dream UTT Juniors competition continued to provide exciting action alongside the senior league. Dabang Delhi TTC edged Dempo Goa Challengers 5-4 to strengthen their playoff push, moving within a single game of fourth place despite having played one fewer tie. UP Prometheans also enjoyed success in the junior competition, defeating HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades 6-3 to register their third victory in four matches and climb to second in the standings.

The junior competition remains an important component of Ultimate Table Tennis, offering young Indian players valuable match experience alongside the country's premier professional league.

UP Prometheans will draw enormous confidence from a victory that showcased resilience, teamwork and belief under pressure. For Sayali Wani, the win could prove to be a defining moment in her career. Defeating a player of Manika Batra's stature after saving three consecutive tie points demonstrates the temperament required to compete at the highest level.

Ahmedabad APL Pipers, meanwhile, will be disappointed to have let victory slip away despite leading for significant periods of the tie.

Butterfly UTT Season 7 now moves into another exciting day of competition, with Dabang Delhi TTC set to face U Mumba TT on Wednesday. After another evening of high-quality table tennis and dramatic finishes, the race for the playoffs continues to intensify, with every game proving increasingly valuable as the league stage progresses.
