Selva Prabhu Clinches NCAA Division I Triple Jump Title with 16.92m, Joins Elite List of Indian Champions

Indian triple jumper Selva Prabhu etched his name into history by winning the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships 2026 men’s triple jump title with a season-best leap of 16.92m at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
The Kansas State athlete delivered a composed and consistent performance to secure one of the biggest victories of his career and add another milestone to India’s growing athletics success story.
With the triumph, Selva became only the fourth Indian athlete to win an NCAA Outdoor Track and Field title, joining an exclusive list that includes legendary triple jumper Mohinder Singh Gill, discus thrower Vikas Gowda, and high jumper Tejaswin Shankar. The achievement also makes him just the second Indian triple jumper after Mohinder Singh Gill to capture the prestigious NCAA outdoor crown.
Competing against a strong collegiate field, Selva produced his winning mark of 16.92m with a legal wind reading of +1.3 m/s, comfortably finishing ahead of the competition. Representing Kansas State University, the Indian athlete opened steadily before finding his rhythm to register the championship-winning jump.
According to the official results, Selva’s series included 16.20m, 16.92m, followed by three fouls before concluding with 16.84m, demonstrating both his consistency and ability to produce big jumps under pressure.
His winning mark proved enough to keep Kevin Kemboi of Oklahoma State in second place with 16.84m, while Brandon Green Jr. of Oklahoma finished third with 16.78m. The result also marked a season-best performance for Selva, who timed his peak perfectly for the biggest collegiate meet of the year.
The victory holds special significance for Indian athletics. NCAA Division I competition is regarded as one of the strongest university sporting circuits in the world, with many future Olympians and world champions emerging from its ranks. By winning the title, Selva joins a distinguished group of Indian athletes who have excelled in the United States collegiate system.
Mohinder Singh Gill famously won the NCAA outdoor triple jump title in 1971 while setting what was then a collegiate record. Vikas Gowda and Tejaswin Shankar later added their names to the list through discus throw and high jump respectively.
Selva’s success now adds another chapter to that legacy while underlining the growing presence of Indian athletes in elite American collegiate competition.
The triumph was equally significant for Kansas State. Selva earned his second First Team All-American honour and became the university’s first men’s outdoor triple jump champion since 1986, ending a four-decade wait for the programme in the event. His success reflects both his personal development and the quality of coaching and support available within the Kansas State athletics programme.
Having already established himself as one of India’s brightest horizontal jump prospects, Selva has continued to make steady progress during his collegiate career, with his NCAA title serving as the biggest validation of that growth.
Selva Prabhu has long been regarded as one of India’s most promising jumpers. Earlier in his career, he announced himself on the international stage by winning a silver medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships, showcasing his ability to compete with the world’s best from a young age.
His transition into the NCAA system has further sharpened his technique and consistency, culminating in this breakthrough national collegiate title.
Winning in Eugene widely regarded as one of the spiritual homes of track and field adds further prestige to the accomplishment.
A jump of 16.92m not only secured the NCAA crown but also signals encouraging form ahead of upcoming international competitions. India has been seeking greater depth in the horizontal jumps, and Selva’s continued improvement offers optimism for future continental and global events. While he still has room to push beyond the 17-metre barrier consistently, performances like this suggest he possesses both the technical foundation and competitive temperament required to challenge at higher levels.
His ability to deliver a season-best mark on championship day also highlights an increasingly mature competitive mindset. Indian athletes competing in the NCAA system have enjoyed increasing success in recent years, with several using collegiate competition as a pathway to international excellence. Selva’s victory reinforces the value of that development route and demonstrates how exposure to world-class facilities and competition can accelerate performance.
For aspiring Indian athletes considering collegiate opportunities in the United States, his achievement serves as another example of the possibilities available through the NCAA pathway.
As the competition concluded at Hayward Field, Selva Prabhu stood atop the podium with a gold medal around his neck and a place in Indian athletics history secured. His 16.92m championship-winning leap not only earned him the NCAA Division I men’s triple jump title but also established him among the select few Indians to conquer one of collegiate athletics’ biggest stages.
With his confidence soaring and his career trajectory continuing upward, the NCAA champion will now look to carry this momentum onto the international circuit, where even bigger opportunities await.
