Shaurya Binu Surges Ahead in Congo with Stunning 64 as Title Race Intensifies
golf

Shaurya Binu produced one of the standout rounds of the season to move into the lead after two rounds of the AM Green IGPL Invitational Congo, setting up a tightly contested finish at the Golf Club Lubumbashi.

The 21-year-old’s exceptional 9-under 64, the lowest round of the week so far, propelled him to the top of the leaderboard at 10-under, giving him a two-shot advantage heading into the final round. Binu’s rise to the summit reflects both his current form and his growing stature on the professional circuit. Having already secured multiple top-10 finishes during the African swing, including strong performances in Mauritius and Johannesburg, he arrived in Congo with momentum. His second-round surge not only reinforced that trajectory but also placed him in a strong position to contend for his first AM Green IGPL title. The round itself was a study in controlled aggression. Starting from the first tee, Binu began steadily before registering his first birdie on the fourth hole. From there, he built rhythm quickly, stringing together three consecutive birdies from the sixth hole. The turning point came at the ninth, where he added an eagle to move to 6-under at the halfway mark of his round.

On the back nine, Binu maintained composure, navigating a sequence of pars before accelerating again in the closing stretch. Birdies on three of the last four holes ensured he maximised scoring opportunities without compromising consistency. His ability to find fairways and greens consistently allowed him to dictate the pace of his round, avoiding unnecessary risks while capitalising on scoring holes.

This performance marked a significant leap from his opening round of 1-under 72, effectively moving him up 15 positions on the leaderboard. Across 36 holes, his combined score of 10-under reflects a blend of recovery and dominance a characteristic often seen in players capable of converting opportunities into victories. Despite holding the lead, Binu faces a formidable chasing pack. Four players are tied for second at 8-under, all within striking distance heading into the final round. Among them are first-round co-leaders Mannat Brar and Tushar Pannu, both of whom followed up their opening 67s with rounds of 71. Also in contention are last week’s winner Udayan Mane and Aryan Roopa Anand, both of whom showed strong form in the second round.

Mane, in particular, remains a significant threat. Coming off his first victory in four years, he has carried confidence into this event. His second-round 5-under 68 included a strong finish, with three birdies in the closing stretch. His ability to produce low scores under pressure makes him a key contender as the tournament approaches its conclusion. Aryan Roopa Anand’s resurgence is another notable storyline. A former All India Amateur champion, Anand displayed signs of returning to peak form with a 6-under 67 in the second round. His round featured five birdies and an eagle, indicating both precision and attacking intent. After a relatively modest showing in recent events, his performance in Congo suggests he is ready to challenge at the top once again.

Mannat Brar continues to remain in contention as well, maintaining her consistency with a second-round 71. Having transitioned successfully from a strong amateur career into the professional circuit, she is aiming to become only the second Indian woman to win a mixed-gender professional event on this tour. Her presence in the leading group adds another dimension to the competition. Tushar Pannu, meanwhile, has shown flashes of brilliance but will look to improve consistency. Despite an eagle and multiple birdies in his second round, a series of bogeys prevented him from climbing higher on the leaderboard. Fine margins such as these could prove decisive in a tightly packed field.

Beyond the top five, the leaderboard remains competitive. Aman Raj sits in sixth place at 6-under, while players such as Varun Chopra, Harendra Gupta, and Ranjit Singh are positioned within reach of the leaders. A group of four players, including Ridhima Dilawari and Manav Shah, round out the top ten at 4-under, highlighting the depth of competition in the field.

The team competition adds another layer to the tournament narrative. Atri Mumbai currently lead with a combined score of 17-under, benefiting from strong contributions from Tushar Pannu and Udayan Mane. Honer Gurugram sit second at 11-under, largely driven by Binu’s performances across both rounds. Auro Realty Goa occupy third place at 8-under, reflecting consistent team contributions. As the final round approaches, the dynamics of the tournament are clear. While Binu holds a two-shot lead, the presence of four players within immediate striking distance ensures that the contest remains open. In such scenarios, the ability to manage pressure, maintain consistency, and execute under high-stakes conditions becomes critical.

For Binu, the challenge will be to replicate the balance he achieved in the second round combining aggression with control. Leading into the final day brings its own set of pressures, particularly in a field where multiple players are capable of producing low scores. The AM Green Indian Golf Premier League, with its mixed-gender format and competitive structure, continues to provide a platform for emerging and established players alike. Events like the Congo Invitational highlight the evolving landscape of Indian golf, where depth, diversity, and competitive intensity are increasingly evident.

Heading into the final round at Lubumbashi, all eyes will be on Shaurya Binu. His performance so far has positioned him at the front, but with a tightly packed leaderboard behind him, the outcome remains far from decided.
