Shillong Lajong held by resolute Dempo as missed chances prove costly

Shillong Lajong FC’s push to close the gap at the top of the Indian Football League Championship Phase stalled after a frustrating goalless draw against Dempo SC at the SSA Stadium in Shillong on Sunday.
Despite dominating large phases of the contest and creating a significant number of chances, the hosts were unable to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Dempo defence. The result leaves Shillong second in the standings with 18 points, still trailing leaders Diamond Harbour FC by seven points. Dempo, meanwhile, remain sixth with 10 points, taking away a valuable point from a difficult away fixture.
Shillong began the match with clear intent, pressing aggressively from the opening whistle. Their high-tempo approach immediately put Dempo under pressure, with an early long ball into the box almost yielding a chance as Phrangki Buam rose to meet it before the defence recovered. The home side continued to control the early exchanges, combining structured pressing with quick transitions. Their approach was built around width, with Buam and Ephraim Lalremtluanga stretching the play and creating space in central areas.
Dempo, initially unsettled, gradually slowed the tempo and attempted to build from the back. However, Shillong’s pressing disrupted their rhythm, forcing turnovers and limiting their ability to progress the ball cleanly through midfield.
Shillong’s dominance in possession translated into multiple opportunities, particularly in the first half. Lamlallian came close in the eighth minute after finding space in the final third, but his effort was blocked by Aubin Kouakou. Everbrightson Sana Mylliempdah also tested goalkeeper Ashish Sibi from distance, as Shillong continued to probe for openings. Their pressing remained effective, repeatedly forcing Dempo into errors in their own half.
The clearest chance of the opening period came in the 34th minute. A defensive lapse allowed Sana to break through on goal, but a well-timed sliding challenge from Jose Luis Moreno Pena denied him the opportunity to shoot.
Shillong’s attacking momentum continued late into the half. Damaitphang Lyngdoh delivered a dangerous low cross across the face of goal that went untouched, while Buam’s effort from a tight angle forced a save from Sibi. Moments later, Lyngdoh struck the woodwork from distance, underlining Shillong’s inability to convert promising positions into goals.

The second half saw a more balanced contest, with Dempo showing greater attacking intent. While Shillong resumed with pressure, the visitors began to create opportunities of their own.
In the 58th minute, Sebastián Gutiérrez produced a moment of quality, connecting with a first-time volley from a tight angle that forced a sharp save from Ranit Sarkar. The effort signalled Dempo’s growing confidence as they looked to capitalise on Shillong’s inability to score.
Dempo came close again from a set-piece in the 67th minute. Sarkar reacted well to the initial effort, while Marcus Joseph fired over the bar from the rebound, missing a chance to give the visitors an unlikely lead. As the match entered its final stages, Shillong increased their attacking intensity, pushing numbers forward in search of a decisive goal. Their urgency created sustained pressure on the Dempo defence, which remained compact and organised.
The closest Shillong came to breaking the deadlock arrived in stoppage time. Substitute Abelson Jachi forced a spill from Sibi, presenting Kenstar Kharshong with a golden opportunity. However, his attempt to lift the ball over the goalkeeper struck the crossbar, summing up Shillong’s frustrating evening in front of goal.
Despite registering 20 shots, including five on target, Shillong were unable to convert their dominance into a winning goal. While Shillong will reflect on missed opportunities, Dempo’s defensive organisation deserves recognition. Under sustained pressure for much of the match, they maintained structure, tracked runs effectively, and limited clear-cut chances despite the volume of attempts.
Goalkeeper Ashish Sibi played a key role, making crucial saves and handling crosses with composure. The defensive unit, anchored by timely interventions from Moreno Pena and others, ensured Shillong’s attacks did not translate into goals. For Dempo, the result represents a hard-earned point that strengthens their position in the lower half of the table, particularly given the quality of opposition and the away setting. For Shillong Lajong, the draw represents a missed opportunity in the context of the title race. With Diamond Harbour FC maintaining a significant lead at the top, dropped points at home could prove costly in the final standings.
Their performance, however, offers both positives and concerns. The ability to control games and create chances remains a strength, but inefficiency in front of goal continues to hinder their progress.
If Shillong are to sustain their challenge, improving conversion rates will be essential. Matches where dominance does not translate into victories can ultimately define a season. As the Championship Phase progresses, both teams face different objectives. Shillong will aim to maintain pressure on the leaders while addressing their finishing issues. Dempo, on the other hand, will look to build on this defensive performance and convert resilience into wins.
In a match where one goal could have changed the narrative entirely, the absence of it left both sides with a point but for Shillong, it felt like two points lost rather than one gained.
