Star Returns and Strategic Choices Set Stage for High-Stakes UTT Season 7 Auction

The Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 is shaping up to be one of the most competitive editions yet, with a strong mix of returning Indian stars, strategic retentions, and a deep international player pool ahead of the upcoming auction.
Scheduled to take place from July 9 to July 26 at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa, the league continues to strengthen its position as a key platform in Indian table tennis. At the centre of attention heading into the April 28 auction in Mumbai are Manav Thakkar, Manush Shah, and Diya Chitale, all of whom return to the player pool after either prior commitments or retention decisions by franchises. Their availability significantly enhances the competitive landscape, particularly given their current standing on the international circuit.
Thakkar and Shah, who have established themselves as one of India’s leading men’s doubles pairs, enter the auction as high-value prospects. Currently ranked World No. 5 in men’s doubles, the duo brings both consistency and proven chemistry. Their presence offers franchises the opportunity to secure a reliable combination capable of delivering across team formats. Shah’s versatility extends further through his mixed doubles partnership with Diya Chitale. The pair, ranked World No. 6, have already made history as the first Indians to qualify for the WTT Finals. This dual capability in both men’s and mixed doubles adds a strategic dimension to their potential selection, particularly in a league format where flexibility across categories is crucial.
Chitale’s return to the auction pool also carries significance given her status in the previous season. As the most expensive pick last year, she enters Season 7 with established value, despite her former team, Dabang Delhi TTC, opting to retain Sathiyan Gnanasekaran instead. Sathiyan’s retention extends his association with the franchise into a seventh consecutive season, underlining both his consistency and importance within the team structure. Similarly, Manika Batra’s retention by Ahmedabad APL Pipers marks a key development. Having missed the previous season due to injury, her return adds both experience and stability. Batra remains one of India’s most accomplished paddlers, and her presence strengthens the overall quality of the league.
Other retention decisions also reflect strategic planning by franchises. Kolkata Thunderblades have retained Ankur Bhattacharjee, while U Mumba TT have secured doubles specialist Akash Pal. These moves suggest a focus on maintaining core combinations while allowing flexibility in other areas during the auction. In contrast, Dempo Goa Challengers and PBG Pune Jaguars have chosen not to retain any players, entering the auction with a full purse. This approach provides maximum flexibility, allowing them to build squads from scratch based on current form and availability. Newly inducted UP Prometheans will also operate with a full purse, adding another layer of competition to the auction dynamics.

Each franchise will have a budget of 1 crore tokens, with the auction structured across four base price categories 20 lakhs, 12 lakhs, 7 lakhs, and 3 lakhs. The incremental bidding system, set at 20,000 tokens, ensures a controlled yet competitive environment where teams must balance star acquisitions with squad depth. The international player pool further enhances the league’s appeal. Returning names such as Bernadette Szocs, Quadri Aruna, Alvaro Robles, and Yangzi Liu bring proven pedigree, while new entrants including Adrien Rassenfosse, Eduard Ionescu, Nicholas Lum, and Youssef Abdelaziz add fresh competition.
In the women’s category, players like France’s Prithika Pavade and Wales’ Anna Hursey expand the diversity of the field. Hursey’s inclusion is particularly notable, as she could become the first Welsh player to feature in the league, reflecting UTT’s growing global reach.
Alongside established names, the auction also features emerging Indian talent. Divyanshi Bhowmick stands out as a key entrant, having delivered historic performances at the junior level. Her gold medal at the 2025 Asian Cadet Championships the first by an Indian in 36 years followed by a bronze at the World Youth Championships, positions her as one of the most promising young players in the country. The presence of such emerging players adds depth to the auction, offering teams the opportunity to invest in long-term potential while maintaining immediate competitiveness.
From a structural perspective, the UTT format demands balanced squads capable of performing across singles, doubles, and mixed categories. This makes the auction a strategic exercise rather than a straightforward selection process. Teams must consider combinations, adaptability, and match-up potential while managing their budgets effectively. The return of top Indian players like Thakkar, Shah, and Chitale, combined with the retention of established names such as Sathiyan and Batra, ensures that Season 7 will feature a strong domestic core.
When paired with an increasingly competitive international field, the overall quality of the league continues to rise. As the auction approaches, the focus will shift to how franchises approach team-building. Whether prioritising star power, established combinations, or emerging talent, each decision will shape the competitive balance of the season.
With the league set to unfold in Goa this July, the groundwork laid at the auction will play a decisive role. The mix of returning stars, strategic retentions, and fresh talent ensures that Butterfly UTT Season 7 is poised to deliver both competitive depth and high-quality table tennis.
