India's top-ranked men's singles player Sumit Nagal produced one of his grittiest performances of the season to book a place in the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger 75 Internazionali di Tennis del Friuli Venezia Giulia in Cordenons, Italy.

The third seed defeated Argentina's Juan Bautista Torres 7-6(3), 6-2 in a physically demanding contest that lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes, securing his third ATP Challenger quarterfinal appearance of the 2026 season. While the final score suggests a comfortable straight-sets victory, the match was anything but straightforward. Nagal had to fight off two set points late in the opening set before turning the momentum decisively in his favour on the European clay.

The victory also keeps alive India's hopes of another deep run on the Challenger circuit as Nagal continues his efforts to climb back up the ATP rankings.

The opening set was a classic clay-court battle, with both players engaging in long baseline rallies and testing each other's consistency. Torres, a natural South American clay-court specialist, matched Nagal shot for shot throughout the first hour of the contest. The turning point came with Nagal serving at 5-6, where he found himself trailing 15-40 and staring at two set points.

Rather than panic, the Indian displayed remarkable composure. He saved both set points with aggressive yet calculated tennis, forcing the set into a tiebreak.

Once the tiebreak began, Nagal elevated his level significantly. His heavier groundstrokes and improved first-serve percentage allowed him to dictate the exchanges, eventually taking the breaker 7-3 to secure a crucial one-set advantage.

Interestingly, despite winning the opening set, Nagal actually won fewer total points than Torres during that period, underlining just how effectively he handled the game's biggest moments.

After surviving the first-set scare, Nagal looked like a completely different player in the second. The Indian immediately seized control by attacking Torres' backhand and moving confidently inside the baseline whenever opportunities arose. His improved court positioning and consistency began forcing errors from the Argentine, who struggled to maintain the same intensity that had characterised the opening set.

Nagal eventually wrapped up the second set 6-2, completing one of his most convincing finishes of the season. The ability to recover emotionally after escaping two set points demonstrated the growing maturity in the Indian's game.

Although Nagal ultimately won in straight sets, the match statistics highlighted how competitive the contest was, particularly during the opening stages.

Nagal finished with 61% first serves in, 73% points won on first serve, 56% points won on second serve, Converted 3 of 4 break points & Won the only tiebreak of the match Torres served well throughout, registering three aces and winning a healthy percentage of second-serve points.

However, Nagal proved more clinical on the crucial points, particularly during break-point opportunities and the first-set tiebreak.

His ability to raise his level under pressure ultimately proved decisive.

Third Challenger Quarterfinal of the Season

The victory marks another important milestone in Nagal's 2026 campaign. It is his third ATP Challenger quarterfinal of the year, a sign that the Indian is steadily rediscovering the consistency that previously helped him break into the world's top 100. After battling injuries and fluctuating form over the past two seasons, Nagal has shown encouraging progress in recent months.

His movement on clay has improved noticeably, while his aggressive baseline game is once again becoming a reliable weapon against higher-ranked opponents. Runs like this are also crucial in terms of ATP ranking points, with every Challenger victory helping him move closer to returning to the upper echelons of men's tennis.

Next Challenge: Federico Bondioli

Standing between Nagal and a place in the semifinals is Italy's Federico Bondioli, currently ranked World No. 346. Despite the ranking difference, Bondioli will enter the contest with confidence, having defeated Nagal in their only previous meeting earlier this year in March 2026. The Italian left-hander will also enjoy strong home support in Cordenons, making the quarterfinal another stern test for the Indian.

However, Nagal's current form suggests he is well equipped to reverse that earlier result. If he can maintain the level of intensity he displayed after the first set against Torres, he will have every chance of progressing further in the tournament.

Beyond the immediate result, Nagal's performance offered several encouraging signs. Saving two set points against an accomplished clay-court player demonstrated both mental toughness and tactical discipline. Equally impressive was the way he raised his intensity after the opening set instead of allowing the lengthy battle to drain his energy.

Those qualities are often what separate players capable of making deep tournament runs from those who fall short in crucial moments. With the North American hard-court season approaching in the coming weeks, a strong run in Cordenons could provide the confidence and ranking boost Nagal needs before transitioning away from clay.

For Indian tennis fans, his return to consistent winning form is an encouraging development. Having reached his third Challenger quarterfinal of the season, Sumit Nagal appears to be building momentum at exactly the right time. If he can continue producing performances marked by resilience, composure and aggressive shot-making, another Challenger title may not be far away.
