Two Indian Javelin Throwers Reach Final as India Opens World U20 Campaign with Encouraging Performances

India made a promising start to its World Athletics U20 Championships 2026 campaign in Eugene, Oregon, with Ashish Yadav and T. Dharanidharan booking their places in the men's javelin throw final, while middle-distance runner Mogali Venkatram advanced to the men's 800m semifinals.

The opening day at the iconic Hayward Field produced a mixture of success and disappointment for the Indian contingent. Alongside the three qualification successes, discus thrower Amanat Kamboj remained in contention for a place in the women's final after producing a season's best effort, while Uwin Anand bowed out in the men's 800m heats and India's mixed 4x400m relay team narrowly missed qualification.

With several Indian athletes still in action over the coming days, Day 1 provided encouraging signs as India's junior athletes continued to compete strongly against the world's best.

The standout performance of the day came from Ashish Yadav, who comfortably qualified for the men's javelin throw final. Competing in Group A, the Indian youngster produced a best throw of 69.87m, finishing first in his qualification group. Interestingly, despite topping the group, Ashish did not need to surpass the automatic qualification standard of 72.50m, as no athlete in Group A managed to achieve the required mark.

When results from both qualification groups were combined, Ashish finished second overall, underlining the consistency of his performance despite conditions that made throwing difficult for several competitors.

His qualification keeps India's medal hopes alive in one of the country's traditionally strong disciplines.

India celebrated a second success in the same event, as T. Dharanidharan also secured qualification for the final. The youngster recorded a best throw of 68.07m, which proved sufficient to claim the 12th and final qualifying position across both groups.

Although it was a tense wait after his final attempt, Dharanidharan ultimately held on to the last available place, ensuring India will have two representatives in the men's javelin final. Only South Africa's Jan-Hendrik Heymans managed to breach the automatic qualification standard, throwing 76.02m to emerge as the leading qualifier.

With Ashish ranked second overall and Dharanidharan safely through, India enters the final with realistic hopes of challenging for a medal.

Venkatram Advances in 800m

Middle-distance runner Mogali Venkatram also enjoyed a successful opening day. Competing in the men's 800m heats, Venkatram finished third in his race, clocking 1:52.81 to automatically qualify for the semifinals. The qualification represents another important milestone for the young Indian, who now moves one step closer to a potential place in the championship final.

Across all the heats, Uganda's Shafeck Murungi emerged as the fastest qualifier after producing a lifetime best of 1:46.64, setting the benchmark for the remaining rounds. Venkatram will now look to improve both his tactical execution and finishing speed as the competition intensifies in the semifinals.

While Venkatram progressed, fellow Indian Uwin Anand saw his campaign come to an early end. Running in Heat 1, Anand finished seventh with a timing of 1:52.37.

The event's qualification rules allowed the top five finishers in each heat along with the two fastest losers to advance. Once the remaining heats concluded, it became clear that Anand's timing would not be enough. With later races producing significantly quicker times including sixth and seventh-place finishers running 1:48.00 and 1:49.32 respectively his hopes of progression were officially ended.

Although disappointed, the experience will prove valuable for the young middle-distance runner as he continues his development.

In the women's discus throw qualification, Amanat Kamboj delivered one of her best performances of the season. The Indian thrower registered a season's best effort of 52.58m, finishing sixth in Group A. China's Chenyi Ma dominated the group with a throw of 57.72m, while three athletes achieved the automatic qualification standard.

Following her performance, Amanat was forced to wait for the completion of Group B, with only the top 12 performers overall progressing to the final. Her season's best effort gave her a fighting chance of advancing, depending on results from the second qualification group.

India's mixed 4x400m relay team narrowly missed qualification for the final after finishing fourth in their heat with a timing of 3:22.85. The performance highlighted an important tactical lesson. Throughout the race, all four Indian athletes adopted an aggressive opening pace before fading significantly over the closing stages of their respective legs.

Race analysis indicated that athletes such as Tahura Khatun reached peak speeds around the halfway stage but experienced one of the sharpest declines over the final metres compared to competitors from other nations. More even pace distribution may have produced a stronger finishing performance.

With the men's and women's 4x400m relay events still to come later in the championships, the Indian coaching staff will hope those lessons translate into improved race execution.

Despite a few disappointments, India's opening day can largely be viewed as encouraging. Having two javelin throwers in the final immediately strengthens India's medal prospects, while Venkatram's qualification keeps another event alive heading into the later stages of the competition.

Ashish Yadav, in particular, demonstrated impressive consistency by topping his qualification group and finishing second overall despite no athlete in his group reaching the automatic qualifying mark.

As the championships continue at Hayward Field, India will now look towards the javelin final and the 800m semifinals with growing optimism. With several athletes still to compete over the coming days, the opening day has provided a solid platform for the Indian contingent, which will now hope to convert promising performances into podium finishes on the world stage.
