As India continue preparations for the upcoming U23 international cycle under coach Naushad Moosa, discussions around emerging talent outside the Indian Super League ecosystem are becoming increasingly important.

Two names that have quietly built strong cases for national-team attention are Treimiki Lamurong of Shillong Lajong FC and Zomuansanga of Aizawl FC. Both players have enjoyed highly productive domestic seasons and have started attracting attention from Indian football followers hoping to see fresh attacking options introduced into the U23 setup.

India’s U23 structure has become increasingly significant over the last few years as the AIFF looks to create a smoother transition pathway between youth football and the senior national team. Exposure tournaments, AFC qualification campaigns and the Asian Games cycle have all made the age-group setup more competitive than before. That also means the scouting pool cannot remain restricted to only ISL academies and established clubs.

Players performing consistently in the I-League and regional football ecosystems deserve attention too, and this season both Lamurong and Zomuansanga have done enough to enter that conversation.

Treimiki Lamurong, still only 21 years old, has emerged as one of the more exciting young wide attackers outside the ISL structure. The Shillong Lajong winger registered eight goal contributions in 17 matches this season while consistently impressing with his direct style of play. What makes Lamurong particularly interesting is not just the numbers, but the tactical profile he brings.

He is aggressive in transition, constantly willing to take defenders on, and works hard defensively without the ball. Modern international football increasingly demands wide players who can contribute both offensively and defensively, and Lamurong fits that requirement well. Several of his strongest performances this season came in high-tempo matches where Shillong Lajong relied heavily on quick transitions and pressing football. His ability to stretch defenses and inject energy into games has stood out repeatedly.

Even when coming off the bench, he has shown the ability to immediately change the pace of matches. That type of impact player can become extremely useful in tournament football where squad depth often decides close contests. Of course, he remains a developing footballer. There are still aspects of his game that require refinement, especially decision-making in the final third and physical consistency across full matches. But that is precisely why exposure at U23 international level matters.

Training camps, stronger opponents and structured tactical environments are often what help talented domestic players take the next step in their development. Most importantly, Lamurong comfortably fits within the current U23 eligibility cycle, making him a realistic option for future India camps and competitions.

Zomuansanga’s case, meanwhile, is slightly different. The Aizawl FC striker has produced outstanding numbers this season, scoring six goals in 12 national-level matches while also dominating the Mizoram Premier League with a remarkable scoring return.

Unlike Lamurong, however, Zomuansanga’s biggest strength lies in offering a very different attacking profile from most young Indian forwards.

Indian football currently has several mobile attackers and wide forwards coming through the system, but genuine physical centre-forwards remain relatively uncommon. Zomuansanga brings aerial presence, hold-up play and strong finishing instincts inside the penalty area. He plays like a traditional No. 9 capable of occupying defenders physically while also finishing quickly in tight spaces.

That profile naturally makes him intriguing because India’s senior national setup has often struggled to find consistent goalscoring forwards beyond a small group of established names. Throughout the season, Zomuansanga repeatedly showed his ability to score under pressure and convert difficult chances. His movement inside the box and physicality have made him one of the standout attacking players in the domestic circuit outside mainstream attention.

However, there is one major complication regarding his U23 prospects.

Unlike Lamurong, Zomuansanga falls outside the eligibility cutoff for the current U23 Asian Games cycle. That means India would need to use one of their limited overage player slots to include him in a U23 tournament squad. Realistically, those overage positions are often reserved for experienced senior internationals or established ISL players, making his inclusion difficult despite his impressive form.

Still, that should not completely remove him from the national-team conversation. If his scoring consistency continues, there is certainly a case for monitoring him within the broader senior national-team pool. Indian football continues searching for reliable domestic strikers capable of playing physically and consistently scoring goals, and Zomuansanga has shown qualities that deserve closer attention.

The rise of both Lamurong and Zomuansanga also highlights the continued importance of Northeast India within the country’s football ecosystem. Clubs like Shillong Lajong and Aizawl FC continue producing technically sharp and mentally resilient footballers despite operating with significantly fewer resources than many top-tier clubs. The region’s football culture remains one of the strongest talent pipelines in the country. For now, Lamurong appears the more realistic immediate U23 option because of his age profile and tactical suitability.

But both players have done enough this season to ensure their names are no longer being discussed only at regional level.

They are beginning to enter the national conversation and deservedly so.
