Women’s 76kg Wrestling Draw Preview: Priya Malik Faces Defending Champion Aiperi Medet Kyzy

The women’s 76kg freestyle wrestling draw at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games has produced one of the most difficult brackets of the competition, with defending Asian Games champion Aiperi Medet Kyzy, Olympic and World champion Yuka Kagami, and India’s Priya Malik all part of a 10-wrestler field.
The absence of UWW ranking-based seeding has created a heavily uneven draw. Six wrestlers are placed in the upper branch, while four receive direct entry into the quarterfinals in the lower half. That difference could become significant in a heavyweight category where recovery between bouts can influence performance.
For India, the draw presents a major challenge from the very first bout.
Priya Malik will begin her campaign against Aiperi Medet Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan. The opening-round bout is scheduled for 7:32 AM IST on October 2. The winner will advance to the quarterfinal against Indonesia’s Varadisa Septi Putri Hidayat.
Medet Kyzy enters the competition with an established continental record. She is the defending Asian Games champion, a three-time Asian champion and a world silver medallist. She also finished inside the top five at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Priya, meanwhile, represents one of India's emerging senior talents. She is a two-time Cadet World champion, the 2023 U20 World champion and won gold at the 2026 Asian Beach Games. The stylistic contrast is significant.
Medet Kyzy relies on reach, heavy collar ties and front-headlock control, while Priya prefers relentless forward movement, clubbing hand-fighting and powerful underhook attacks.
The two have already met at the 2024 Asian Championships in Bishkek, where Medet Kyzy won 3-1. Priya will therefore need to avoid predictable forward attacks and create angles rather than allowing the Kyrgyz wrestler to establish her defensive structure.
Quarterfinal could provide a route forward
If Priya defeats Medet Kyzy, she will face Varadisa Septi Putri Hidayat of Indonesia in the quarterfinal. That quarterfinal is scheduled for 8:41 AM IST.
Hidayat won silver at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games but has considerably less experience against the established global names in this field. For Priya, however, the physical workload would already be significant. She would have to wrestle twice in just over an hour before potentially reaching the semifinal.
That is an important feature of this draw.
The other side of the upper branch begins with Chinese Taipei's Chang Hui-tsz against Mongolia's Davaanasan Enkh-Amar. Their bout is scheduled for 7:32 AM IST, with the winner moving into the quarterfinal against Uzbekistan's Sevinchoy Polvonova at approximately 8:50 AM IST. Enkh-Amar is the 2026 Senior Asian champion and a 2023 World silver medallist. She also competed at the Paris Olympics and brings a high-tempo style based around aggressive leg attacks, continuous transitions and conditioning.
The projected semifinal from this side is therefore a potential meeting between Medet Kyzy and Enkh-Amar. That semifinal would be scheduled for approximately 9:26 AM IST.
For Priya, getting through Medet Kyzy could therefore open the possibility of another demanding contest against one of the strongest wrestlers in the division.
Yuka Kagami has a much shorter route
The lower half of the draw is headed by Japan's Yuka Kagami, the reigning Olympic and World champion. Kagami receives a direct quarterfinal berth and will face China's Li Wenji at approximately 8:51 AM IST. Kagami's technical profile makes her particularly difficult to attack. She operates from a low stance, uses excellent defensive positioning and attacks the legs with explosive ankle picks and low singles.
Li, meanwhile, brings upper-body strength and aggressive clinch wrestling. The other quarterfinal in the lower half pits South Korea's Eunju Hwang against Kazakhstan's Elmira Syzdykova at approximately 8:52 AM IST. Syzdykova is one of the most experienced wrestlers in the field, with an Olympic bronze medal from Rio 2016 and two Asian Championship titles. Her upper-body throws and lateral drops remain a major threat.
The lower-branch semifinal is scheduled for approximately 9:36 AM IST.
The difference in workload between the two halves is one of the most interesting elements of the draw. Wrestlers in the upper branch must compete in the round of 16, quarterfinal and semifinal before reaching the gold-medal bout. The lower-branch athletes begin directly in the quarterfinals.
That means someone emerging from the upper branch could potentially have already wrestled three times before facing an opponent who has wrestled only twice. In a 76kg contest, where physical exchanges, recovery and conditioning can become increasingly important, that difference cannot be ignored.
The draw also provides a potential second route to the podium. Under the UWW repechage format, wrestlers defeated by finalists can return to the competition for the bronze-medal pathway. If Medet Kyzy defeats Priya and subsequently reaches the final, Priya could enter the upper repechage.
That bout is scheduled for approximately 9:53 AM IST, with the corresponding bronze-medal match at approximately 4:12 PM IST. The second bronze-medal bout is scheduled for approximately 4:22 PM IST, while the women's 76kg gold-medal bout is scheduled for approximately 4:32 PM IST. That makes the opening contest against Medet Kyzy important even beyond the championship bracket.
A draw that leaves little room for error
At the top of the bracket, the projected championship route brings together some of the division's strongest names. Kagami's path begins in the quarterfinals, while Medet Kyzy and Enkh-Amar must negotiate the more demanding upper branch.
For India, however, everything begins at 7:32 AM IST. Priya Malik vs Aiperi Medet Kyzy is one of the most significant opening-round bouts of the wrestling programme. Priya has the credentials and physical tools to make the contest competitive, but she will need to deal with Medet Kyzy's experience, positional defence and ability to control exchanges.
Win, and Priya immediately becomes part of the championship conversation. Lose, and her medal hopes depend on the defending champion reaching the final and opening the repechage route.
Either way, India's women's 76kg campaign will begin with one of the toughest possible tests — and the first major wrestling question of the day will be answered at 7:32 AM IST on October 2.
