World Athletics U20 Championships 2026: Tanu Chaudhary Headlines India's Busy Day 2 Campaign in Eugene
India's campaign at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2026 gathers momentum on Day 2 as a contingent of 10 athletes prepares to compete across seven events at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Following an encouraging opening day that produced two finalists in the men's javelin throw, a semifinalist in the men's 800m and a finalist in the women's discus throw, the Indian team will now look to build on that momentum with several athletes aiming to progress further in their respective events.
The spotlight will be firmly on Tanu Chaudhary, who begins her campaign in the women's 400m hurdles, while several other Indian athletes will be in qualification rounds across field and track events.
One of India's brightest prospects on Day 2 is Tanu Chaudhary, who will compete in Heat 5 of the women's 400m hurdles first round. The youngster enters the championships in encouraging form after clocking a lifetime best of 59.15 seconds in her most recent competition. That performance has given her confidence heading into the global event, although she faces a highly competitive field featuring athletes from the United States, Japan, Canada, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Tanu has been drawn in Lane 5 and will race against Zoe van Gils of the Netherlands, Rachel Gardner of Japan, Douaa Labliadh of Tunisia, Kate Fink of Canada, Katka Mičániová of Slovakia, Lisa Frank of Switzerland and Tatum Lynn of the United States.
Qualification for the semifinals will be fiercely contested, with the first four athletes in each heat securing automatic qualification, while the next three fastest times across all heats will also advance.
Given the strength of the field, Tanu will need another performance close to or better than her personal best to keep her championship hopes alive.
Apart from Tanu's campaign, India will have representation across multiple disciplines throughout the day. The action begins with Anshu competing in the women's shot put qualification, where she will aim to secure a place in the final. Attention will then shift to the men's high jump qualification, where Basant Rana and K. Ambriesh will represent India. Both athletes will be looking to clear the qualifying height and progress to the medal round.
Middle-distance runner Amit Kumar will compete in Heat 4 of the men's 400m hurdles, while P. Royshan and Dhanush Raj begin their campaigns in the men's triple jump qualification.
India's representation on the track continues with Mohammed Ashfaq and Piyush Raj competing in separate heats of the men's 400m opening round.
Later in the day, Amanat Kamboj returns for the women's discus throw final after successfully negotiating qualification on the opening day. India could also have additional representation in the women's shot put final and the men's 400m semifinals, subject to qualification from the earlier rounds. With athletes spread across both morning and evening sessions, Day 2 promises to be one of India's busiest days at the championships.
The Indian contingent enters Day 2 with confidence after producing several encouraging performances during the opening day's competition. The biggest success came in the men's javelin throw qualification, where both Ashish Yadav and T. Dharanidharan secured places in the final. Ashish delivered one of the standout performances of the qualification round, throwing 69.87 metres to finish second overall. Dharanidharan also booked his place in the medal event with a best effort of 68.07 metres, finishing 12th overall.
Having two finalists in the same event provides India with genuine medal prospects heading into the javelin final.
India experienced mixed fortunes in the track events on Day 1. The 4×400m mixed relay team finished fourth in its heat with a time of 3:22.85, narrowly missing out on qualification for the final despite a determined performance. In the men's 800m, Uwin Anand's campaign ended in the heats after he finished seventh in Heat 1 with a timing of 1:52.37.
However, there was positive news for India through Mogali Venkatram, who progressed to the semifinals after finishing third in his heat in 1:52.81. His qualification keeps India's hopes alive in one of the most competitive middle-distance events at the championships.
Amanat Kamboj Reaches Women's Discus Final
The field events also produced encouraging results for India. Amanat Kamboj qualified for the women's discus throw final after producing a season's best effort of 52.58 metres. Her throw placed her sixth in Qualification Group A and 12th overall, comfortably securing a place in the final. Competing in a global final will provide valuable experience for the young thrower while also offering another opportunity for India to challenge for a strong finish.
The World Athletics U20 Championships remains one of the most important stepping stones for young athletes aspiring to compete at the senior international level. For India, the opening day demonstrated the growing depth of talent across multiple disciplines, with finalists, semifinalists and strong qualifying performances reflecting the progress made in junior athletics over recent years.
Day 2 presents another opportunity for the Indian contingent to strengthen that momentum.
