India’s Ashmita Chaliha advanced to the semi-finals of the Macau Open 2026 after defeating South Korea’s Kim Min Sun in straight games. The World No. 63 will next face Park Ga Eun for a place in the final.

Indian shuttler Ashmita Chaliha continued her impressive run at the Macau Open Super 300 2026, booking a place in the women’s singles semi-finals with a composed 21-16, 21-18 victory over South Korea’s Kim Min Sun on Friday.

Ranked World No. 63, the left-handed Indian displayed remarkable resilience, especially in the second game where she staged a stunning comeback from a significant deficit to complete the win in straight games. The result marks one of her best performances of the season and keeps India’s hopes alive in the tournament.

Ashmita will now take on another South Korean player, Park Ga Eun, with a place in the final at stake.

Facing World No. 99 Kim Min Sun, Ashmita entered the quarter-final as the higher-ranked player but was tested throughout the encounter. The opening game saw the Indian establish control through disciplined rallies and sharp attacking play. She maintained a narrow lead for much of the contest before pulling away in the closing stages to take the game 21-16.

Her ability to dictate the pace and force errors from the Korean proved decisive, giving her an early advantage in the match.

The second game, however, presented a completely different challenge.

Kim Min Sun started aggressively and quickly built a commanding lead, leaving Ashmita chasing the scoreboard for much of the game. At one stage, the Indian trailed 2-8, and the deficit widened further to 7-13 before stretching to 13-17, placing Kim firmly in control and seemingly on course to force a deciding game.

Instead of panicking, Ashmita demonstrated outstanding composure. She gradually clawed her way back through patient shot selection, consistent defence and timely winners, steadily reducing the gap before drawing level in the closing stages. Once momentum shifted, the Indian maintained her focus and completed a memorable turnaround to seal the second game 21-18 and the match.

The comeback underlined her improved mental strength and ability to perform under pressure qualities that will be crucial as she progresses deeper into the tournament.

Ashmita’s journey to the semi-finals has been marked by commanding performances from the opening round. In the Round of 32, she defeated Tung Ciou-Tong in just 26 minutes, cruising to a 21-14, 21-11 victory. The match showcased her attacking intent and efficiency, allowing her to conserve energy for the later rounds.

She followed that up with another straight-games success in the Round of 16, overcoming World No. 66 Ishika Jaiswal of the United States by 22-20, 21-15. The opening game against Ishika was tightly contested, but Ashmita held her nerve in the closing points before carrying the momentum into a more comfortable second game to secure progression.

Across three matches in Macau, she has now defeated opponents from Chinese Taipei, the United States and South Korea without dropping a single game.

Ashmita’s performances come at an important time for Indian badminton, with several emerging players looking to establish themselves consistently on the BWF World Tour. Although India has enjoyed considerable success over the past decade through stars such as PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal, the next generation has been working to make its mark on the international circuit. Ashmita’s run in Macau demonstrates that she is capable of competing with quality opposition and delivering under pressure.

Her left-handed style provides opponents with a different tactical challenge, while her ability to construct rallies patiently has become increasingly evident during this tournament.

Standing between Ashmita and a place in the final is Park Ga Eun of South Korea, another technically accomplished player who will present a fresh tactical examination. Given the form Ashmita has displayed so far, particularly her resilience against Kim Min Sun, she will head into the semi-final with growing confidence.

A victory would not only secure a place in the championship match but also provide a significant rankings boost and reinforce her credentials as one of India’s rising stars in women’s singles.

One of the most encouraging aspects of Ashmita’s Macau campaign has been her consistency. She has adapted to different opponents and match situations, whether cruising through early rounds or recovering from difficult positions as she did in the quarter-final.

The comeback from 13-17 down in the second game against Kim Min Sun stands out as a testament to her fighting spirit and tactical maturity. Rather than relying solely on attacking play, she displayed patience, choosing the right moments to accelerate and capitalise on her opponent’s mistakes.

As the tournament enters its decisive stages, Ashmita Chaliha has positioned herself as one of the standout performers of the week. With three straight-set victories and confidence building with every match, the Indian shuttler now finds herself just one win away from the Macau Open 2026 final.

Should she continue this form against Park Ga Eun, Ashmita could be on course for one of the biggest titles of her career and another significant milestone for Indian badminton on the BWF World Tour.
