The fourth day of the HSBC Rugby Premier League powered by Avid Season 2 produced another entertaining set of fixtures at the G.M.C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Hyderabad, with Bengaluru Bravehearts moving to the top of the men's standings after defeating Kolkata Banga Tigers 14-5.

The action-packed day also saw Mumbai Dreamers register a convincing victory over Delhi Redz in the men’s competition, while the women’s matches produced two exciting contests as Chennai Bulls edged Delhi Redz in dramatic fashion and Kolkata Banga Tigers overcame Mumbai Dreamers.

With the tournament gathering momentum, Friday’s results highlighted the growing competitiveness of India’s premier rugby league.

The headline result of the day came in the men’s competition as Bengaluru Bravehearts secured a disciplined 14-5 victory over Kolkata Banga Tigers to climb to the top of the table. The opening quarter remained evenly balanced, with both teams testing each other’s defensive structures but unable to break through. Bengaluru eventually found the breakthrough when Shilton van Wyk crossed over for the opening try, giving his side an important advantage.

The contest remained tightly contested through the second quarter, with Kolkata working hard to stay within touching distance. However, Bengaluru elevated their intensity after halftime and extended their lead through Zain Davids, whose crucial try created valuable breathing room.

Brady Rush finally got Kolkata on the scoreboard during the closing stages, but Bengaluru’s organised defence ensured there would be no late comeback as they closed out an important win that propelled them to the summit of the standings.

Earlier in the day, Mumbai Dreamers produced a composed display to defeat Delhi Redz 31-14 in the men’s competition. The opening exchanges were closely fought before Neeraj Khatri broke the deadlock for Mumbai. James Turner quickly followed with another score to put the Dreamers firmly in control.

Delhi Redz responded through Josep Serres after some slick passing play, but Mumbai restored their advantage before halftime thanks to Guillaume Bouche. Patrick Odongo’s counterattacking try kept Delhi within striking distance heading into the second half. However, Mumbai dominated possession and controlled territory after the break, limiting Delhi’s opportunities while steadily protecting their lead. Their disciplined approach ultimately translated into a comfortable 17-point victory.

The women’s encounter between Chennai Bulls and Delhi Redz turned into one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament so far, with Chennai completing a remarkable comeback to prevail 31-27.

Delhi started brightly as Eden Kilgour opened the scoring, only for Adia Pye to respond immediately for Chennai. Lavena Cavuru then intercepted brilliantly to restore Delhi’s advantage before both Kilgour and Cavuru added further tries, helping the Redz establish what appeared to be a commanding lead.

The Bulls, however, refused to surrender. Savannah Bauder and Larah Wright sparked the revival during the third quarter, reducing the deficit and shifting momentum. Pye then put Chennai ahead for the first time in the match during the final period, but Kilgour struck again to swing the advantage back in Delhi’s favour.

Just when it seemed Delhi would hold on, Savannah Bauder broke free in extra time to score the decisive try, completing a thrilling turnaround and handing Chennai Bulls a memorable victory.

The women’s fixture between Kolkata Banga Tigers and Mumbai Dreamers saw Kolkata emerge with a deserved 19-5 victory after controlling much of the contest. Nia Toliver opened the scoring late in the first quarter following sustained attacking pressure, setting the tone for Kolkata’s aggressive performance. Shiniqwa Lamprecht then extended the lead as the Tigers continued to dominate possession and territory.

Mumbai Dreamers improved after halftime and attempted to mount a comeback, but Kolkata’s defensive organisation frustrated their attacks.

Sofia Gonzalez added another crucial try early in the fourth quarter to effectively seal the contest before Maria Tshiremba managed a late consolation score for Mumbai. Despite the late effort, Kolkata comfortably saw out the match to register an important victory.

As the HSBC Rugby Premier League Season 2 progresses, the quality and competitiveness of the matches continue to improve across both the men’s and women’s competitions. Bengaluru Bravehearts’ rise to the top of the men’s standings reflects their consistency and defensive discipline, while Mumbai Dreamers’ convincing victory keeps them firmly in contention. In the women’s division, Chennai Bulls’ resilience and Kolkata Banga Tigers’ commanding display underline the depth of talent on show in the league.

With several rounds still remaining and teams closely matched, the battle for playoff positions is expected to intensify in the coming days. Fans at Hyderabad’s Gachibowli Stadium have already witnessed dramatic finishes, impressive individual performances and tactical battles, all of which point towards an exciting remainder of the tournament.

As Season 2 unfolds, the HSBC Rugby Premier League continues to showcase the rapid growth of rugby in India while providing a high-quality platform for domestic and international stars to compete at the highest level.
