Champions Again! U Mumba TT Rally Past Dempo Goa Challengers to Retain Butterfly UTT Crown

U Mumba TT scripted a memorable comeback to successfully defend their Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 title, defeating Dempo Goa Challengers 8-5 in a dramatic Grand Finale at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa on Sunday.

The defending champions overcame an early deficit to hand Goa their first and only defeat of the season, ending the challengers' unbeaten run in the most crucial match of the campaign. Inspired by captain Manush Shah and Anna Hursey, U Mumba turned the tie around with dominant performances in the mixed doubles and men's singles before Anusha Kutumbale held her nerve in a thrilling deciding match to seal back-to-back championships.

The victory also elevated U Mumba alongside Dempo Goa Challengers as the most successful franchise in Ultimate Table Tennis history, with two titles each.

Organised under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani, Butterfly UTT Season 7 featured 42 players, including 14 Olympians, reaffirming its status as one of the world's premier professional table tennis leagues.

The final began exactly as Dempo Goa Challengers would have hoped. One of the breakout stars of the season, Abhinandh PB, continued his remarkable form by defeating Lilian Bardet 2-1. The young Indian claimed the opening two games before Bardet pulled one back, giving Goa an early advantage.

The momentum remained with the hosts when world-class Romanian paddler Bernadette Szocs recovered after losing the opening game to Anna Hursey. Szocs displayed her trademark attacking game to win the next two games and extend Goa's lead to 4-2. At that stage, Dempo appeared firmly on course to complete an unbeaten season and lift the title.

However, champions often find another level when the pressure is greatest.

U Mumba found the turning point in the mixed doubles. Captain Manush Shah and Anna Hursey, arguably the most successful mixed doubles pairing of the season, once again demonstrated why they had become one of the league's standout combinations. Facing the experienced duo of Alvaro Robles and Syndrela Das, the U Mumba pair produced a flawless display, winning all three games in straight sets.

The victory extended their unbeaten run as a partnership to six consecutive matches and shifted the momentum decisively in U Mumba's favour. More importantly, it narrowed the overall deficit and reignited belief within the defending champions.

With the tie delicately poised, it was fitting that captain Manush Shah delivered one of the defining performances of the final. Facing Spain's Alvaro Robles, Manush endured a difficult start, dropping the opening game. Rather than panic, the Indian responded with exceptional composure. The second game became one of the most dramatic of the evening, with Manush edging it 11-10 after saving crucial points under immense pressure. The deciding game belonged entirely to the U Mumba captain.

Displaying aggressive shot-making and tactical maturity, he raced through the final game 11-5, handing U Mumba a vital 7-5 overall lead. His victory completely transformed the complexion of the final and placed the defending champions within touching distance of another title.

Everything came down to the final match between Anusha Kutumbale and Syndrela Das. The pressure could hardly have been greater. With the championship on the line, both players produced a tense, high-quality contest. Syndrela appeared to have rescued the match after fighting back from 5-9 down to level the score at 10-10. The momentum seemed to have swung once again.

But Anusha refused to let the opportunity slip. Holding her composure in the decisive moments, she claimed the crucial final point 11-10, sparking emotional celebrations from the U Mumba bench. The victory confirmed an 8-5 triumph and sealed the franchise's second consecutive Butterfly UTT championship.

The title completed an extraordinary season for U Mumba TT. Earlier this month, the franchise had also captured the Dream UTT Juniors title, becoming the first team in league history to win both the junior and senior championships in the same season. The success also validated the return of coaches John Murphy and Jay Modak, whose guidance helped mould another championship-winning squad.

Their ability to build a balanced team featuring experienced international stars alongside emerging Indian talent proved decisive throughout the tournament.

The title celebrations were accompanied by several individual awards recognising exceptional performances across the season. U Mumba captain Manush Shah was named the Men's Most Valuable Player, while teammate Anna Hursey claimed the Women's Most Valuable Player award after a series of influential performances throughout the competition. Despite finishing runners-up, Abhinandh PB enjoyed a breakthrough tournament and deservedly received the ChatGPT Player of the League award following an outstanding campaign for Dempo Goa Challengers.

Meanwhile, Omar Assar of PBG Pune Jaguars was honoured with the Shot of the League award. The final itself belonged largely to Manush.

His performances earned him the Indian Player of the Tie, ChatGPT Player of the Tie, and Bisleri Shot of the Tie awards, while Anna Hursey was recognised as the Foreign Player of the Tie.

Reflecting on the league's progress, co-promoter Vita Dani highlighted Butterfly UTT's role in strengthening Indian table tennis.

She noted that one of the league's founding objectives was to accelerate the development of Indian players and ultimately help India win Olympic medals. The continued rise of players such as Manav Thakkar, Manush Shah, Syndrela Das, and Divyanshi Bhowmick demonstrates that the league is steadily achieving that vision by providing Indian paddlers with regular exposure against world-class opposition.

Co-promoter Niraj Bajaj echoed those sentiments, praising the growing quality of competition, the emergence of Indian talent and the unwavering support from players, franchises, broadcasters and the Table Tennis Federation of India.

As Butterfly UTT concludes another successful season, the league continues to establish itself among the world's premier professional table tennis competitions. For U Mumba TT, however, Season 7 will be remembered as the year they proved champions never stop fighting. Overcoming an unbeaten opponent in the final, completing a historic junior-senior double and retaining their crown showcased the resilience, depth and winning mentality that now define one of Indian table tennis' most successful franchises.
