FC Goa extended their strong run in the Indian Super League 2025–26 with a controlled 2-0 victory over NorthEast United FC in Guwahati, a result that lifted them to second place in the standings.
In a performance defined by efficiency at both ends of the pitch, the Gaurs combined attacking clarity with defensive discipline to secure three crucial points. The win takes FC Goa to 19 points from 10 matches, reinforcing their position in the title race, while NorthEast United remain 12th with seven points. At the heart of Goa’s performance was captain Sandesh Jhingan, whose commanding display in defence earned him the Player of the Match award. NorthEast United began the contest with intent, looking to unsettle Goa early.
Redeem Tlang tested goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari with a long-range effort, while Brison Fernandes created an opening down the left flank but failed to convert it into a clear chance. These early moments reflected the hosts’ willingness to engage, particularly in transition. Goa, however, responded quickly by asserting control through possession. Their approach was structured, focusing on building from the back and gradually advancing into attacking areas. Boris Singh attempted to create openings from distance, but his efforts drifted wide, indicating Goa’s early probing without immediate reward.
The hosts continued to threaten intermittently, with Jithin MS coming close after receiving a well-weighted pass from Lalrinzuala. Tiwari’s composed intervention ensured that Goa remained level during a phase where NorthEast showed promise on the break. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute, highlighting Goa’s ability to convert opportunities efficiently. Muhammed Nemil delivered a precise lofted pass from deep, releasing Dejan Dražić behind the defence. The winger demonstrated both strength and composure, holding off pressure from Mayakkannan before finishing into the bottom corner. It was a goal built on vision, timing, and execution. Dražić’s impact, however, was short-lived as he was forced off due to injury soon after scoring.
His replacement, Abdul Rabeeh, ensured that Goa’s attacking momentum was not disrupted. Linking effectively with Udanta Singh, Rabeeh contributed to sustained pressure, including a chance for Nemil that narrowly missed the target.

As the half progressed, Goa increasingly dictated the tempo. Their midfield control limited NorthEast’s ability to sustain attacks, while Jhingan’s leadership at the back ensured that defensive transitions were managed effectively. Interceptions and positional awareness from the Goa backline prevented the hosts from creating clear opportunities, allowing the visitors to carry a 1-0 lead into the break. The second half followed a similar pattern, with Goa maintaining control through possession and NorthEast searching for openings. An early opportunity for Goa nearly doubled their advantage when Nemil’s curling free-kick forced a strong save from Gurmeet Singh, underlining the visitors’ continued attacking intent.
NorthEast United attempted to increase their urgency as the half progressed. Combinations between Jithin MS and substitute Parthib Gogoi brought some energy to their forward play, but the final pass remained elusive. Despite earning multiple corners and spending phases in the attacking third, they struggled to break down Goa’s organised defensive structure. Jhingan, supported by Pol Moreno and the rest of the defensive unit, ensured that Goa maintained compactness. Their ability to hold shape and clear danger under pressure was a defining aspect of the match, particularly as NorthEast pushed for an equaliser.
Goa, meanwhile, remained composed and continued to look for a second goal to secure the result. Rabeeh and Ayush Chhetri both tested the defence, but the finishing touch was missing. As the match entered its final stages, the one-goal margin kept NorthEast in contention, adding tension to the closing minutes. The decisive moment arrived in stoppage time. A move initiated by Huidrom Thoi Singh saw Aakash Sangwan deliver a cross into the box. The ball eventually reached Mohammed Yasir on the right side, and the substitute produced a moment of quality, curling a left-footed shot into the top corner off the post. The goal effectively ended the contest, reflecting Goa’s ability to capitalise on late opportunities.
From there, Goa managed the remaining minutes efficiently, ensuring there was no late response from the hosts. The final whistle confirmed a result that was built on structure, discipline, and timely execution. For FC Goa, the victory represents more than just three points. It highlights a team that has found balance between attack and defence, a key factor in sustaining a title challenge. Their ability to control matches, limit opposition chances, and deliver in decisive moments has been evident in recent performances.
For NorthEast United, the result underscores ongoing challenges. While there were phases of promise, particularly in transitions, the lack of cutting edge in the final third and difficulty in breaking down organised defences remain areas of concern. As the league progresses, FC Goa’s consistency positions them as one of the primary contenders, while NorthEast United will need to address structural gaps to improve their standing. In Guwahati, the difference was clear Goa executed their plan with precision, and that proved decisive.
