India's young women wrestlers continued their impressive run at the U17 Asian Wrestling Championships 2026 in Da Nang, Vietnam, securing five medals on Saturday, including two gold, two silver and one bronze.

Diksha and Garima emerged as the standout performers, winning their respective weight categories to lead another successful day for the Indian contingent. The medal haul further highlighted India's growing depth in women's wrestling and came just days after the country's strong showing at the U23 Asian Wrestling Championships. With multiple wrestlers reaching medal rounds across different weight categories, India once again demonstrated why it remains one of Asia's leading wrestling nations at the age-group level.

Diksha delivered one of the most commanding performances of the competition in the 43kg category. The young Indian wrestler barely put a foot wrong throughout the tournament, overpowering her opponents with a combination of technical precision and attacking intent. Her campaign began with an emphatic 8-0 victory over a wrestler from Kyrgyzstan before she followed it up with a 10-0 win against Vietnam's representative to book her place in the final.

In the gold medal bout, Diksha maintained her dominance, defeating Asangaryeva of Kyrgyzstan 6-0 to secure the Asian title. The convincing nature of her victories throughout the tournament underlined her superiority in the weight class and established her as one of India's standout performers at the championships. India's second gold medal came through Garima in the 73kg category.

Garima produced an aggressive and high-scoring performance in the final against Mongolia's Namuuntsetseg Batbold. The Indian wrestler controlled the contest from the outset and consistently found scoring opportunities. Her attacking approach paid off as she registered an impressive 18-6 victory to secure the gold medal.

The margin of victory reflected Garima's dominance and completed a memorable day for Indian women's wrestling. With two wrestlers standing atop the podium, India once again showcased the strength of its youth wrestling programme.

India came close to adding more gold medals but had to settle for silver in two categories. In the 49kg division, Nikita advanced to the final after a series of strong performances. However, she faced a difficult challenge against China's Yuan Yuting in the title clash. Despite her efforts, Nikita went down 2-10 and finished with the silver medal.

Antra also reached the final in the 65kg category following an impressive campaign. One of the highlights of her run was a hard-fought semifinal victory over a Japanese opponent, which secured her place in the gold medal bout. In the final, she faced China's Siyu Wei and was unable to find a breakthrough, eventually losing 0-5. Nevertheless, the silver medal represented another valuable achievement for the Indian wrestler.

The two silver medals further strengthened India's overall medal tally and demonstrated the country's ability to consistently challenge for titles across multiple weight categories.

Sakshi ensured India added a fifth medal through the bronze medal playoff in the 57kg category. After suffering a narrow defeat in the semifinals, the Indian wrestler responded strongly in the bronze medal match. Facing Arina Kuanyshova of Kazakhstan, Sakshi delivered a dominant display and secured a comprehensive 10-0 victory.

The performance highlighted her resilience and determination to finish on the podium despite the disappointment of missing out on the final. Her bronze medal completed India's five-medal haul for the day.

The performances in Da Nang reinforce the growing depth of Indian women's wrestling at the grassroots and age-group levels. Over the past decade, India has emerged as a major force in international women's wrestling, producing Olympic and World Championship medalists. Results at youth competitions such as the U17 Asian Championships provide an important glimpse into the next generation of talent. The success of Diksha, Garima, Nikita, Antra and Sakshi demonstrates that the pipeline of young wrestlers remains strong.

With two gold, two silver and one bronze medal secured on the day, India once again established itself among the top-performing nations at the championships. More importantly, the results provide further evidence that the future of Indian women's wrestling remains bright as a new generation of athletes continues to make its mark on the continental stage.
