Hero Asian Champions Trophy 2026: Harmanpreet Singh Hat-Trick Powers India to Fourth Straight Win Against Malaysia

Captain Harmanpreet Singh produced a match-winning performance, scoring a hat-trick as India defeated Malaysia 4-2 to register their fourth consecutive victory at the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 in Jalandhar on Sunday.
The defending champions maintained their unbeaten record at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium, extending their lead at the top of the standings with another commanding performance. Harmanpreet scored in the third, 33rd and 58th minutes, converting two penalty corners and a penalty stroke, while Sukhjeet Singh added India's fourth goal in the 43rd minute. Malaysia responded through Akhimullah Anuar in the 25th minute and Shello Silverius in the final minute, but India's attacking quality proved decisive.
The Indian captain was named Player of the Match for his contribution, taking his tournament tally to eight goals and establishing himself as the competition's leading scorer.
The encounter carried additional significance, as it was a rematch of the Asian Games 2026 gold-medal match, where India had defeated Malaysia 5-1 to defend their title. Both teams entered Sunday's contest unbeaten after winning their opening three matches, making it an important test of India's consistency against one of the tournament's strongest sides.
India made an immediate impact, winning a penalty corner in the third minute. Harmanpreet converted through a variation involving Jugraj Singh to give the hosts an early advantage. Malaysia attempted to respond through their attacking combinations, but India's defensive organisation initially kept them at bay. Aditya Arjun Lalage produced an important interception to cut out a dangerous pass intended for Anuar. At the other end, Hardik Singh made an impressive run past Shafiq Hassan, although Mandeep Singh and Sukhjeet could not convert the opportunity.
The visitors increased their pressure in the second quarter and earned their first penalty corner in the 18th minute after Fitri Saari was fouled by Harmanpreet. Rajinder blocked Azimuddin Kamaruddin's initial attempt, while goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak dealt with the follow-up.
India had an opportunity to extend their lead in the 21st minute after Aditya was brought down, earning another penalty corner. Aminul Azhar blocked the first attempt, while Harmanpreet's effort from the re-award struck the crossbar.
Malaysia subsequently earned a series of penalty corners. Amit Rohidas made two important interventions as the first rusher before Pathak produced another save. However, the sustained pressure eventually brought an equaliser in the 25th minute, with Anuar converting a penalty corner to make it 1-1.
Both teams went into half-time level, setting up a competitive second half.
The defending champions returned with greater attacking intensity and regained the lead in the 33rd minute. Harmanpreet once again stepped up from a penalty corner, finding the target to put India ahead 2-1.
The contest took another significant turn in the 38th minute when Faiz Jali received a 10-minute yellow card for charging into Mandeep from behind. India capitalised on the numerical advantage, increasing their pressure on the Malaysian defence.
The reward arrived in the 43rd minute. Hardik Singh produced an incisive pass towards the top of the circle, where Sukhjeet Singh took control and beat the goalkeeper with a backhand finish. The goal extended India's lead to 3-1 and gave the hosts greater control heading into the final quarter.
Malaysia attempted to regain momentum at the start of the fourth quarter, creating an attacking opportunity from the right, but the effort went wide. India then had to manage a five-minute period with Harmanpreet temporarily off the pitch after he received a yellow card in the 48th minute. Malaysia, however, could not make their numerical advantage count.

India gradually regained control and continued to threaten in the attacking third. Their fourth goal arrived in the 58th minute after the ball struck Marhan's foot on the goal line, resulting in a penalty stroke. Harmanpreet took responsibility and produced a powerful effort high to the goalkeeper's right, completing his hat-trick and extending India's advantage to 4-1.
Malaysia were reduced to 10 players again around the same period after Amirul Azahar received a yellow card. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the visitors managed to find a late consolation goal. Aiman Rozemi and Marhan combined to create the opportunity for Silverius, who scored in the 60th minute to make it 4-2.
It was too late to alter the outcome, as India comfortably saw out the remaining moments to secure their fourth successive win.
India now leads the tournament standings with 12 points from four matches and an impressive goal difference of +21. Malaysia remain second with nine points and a goal difference of +6, followed by Japan on seven points and South Korea on six. All four teams have secured semi-final qualification, while China and Bangladesh are out of the title race.
Harmanpreet's eight goals have made him the leading scorer of the tournament, and his performance against Malaysia further underlined his importance to the defending champions.
Speaking after the match, the Indian captain made the team's ambition clear: “We are here for gold. Our only target is to win at home. All the youngsters coming in are doing well.”
He also acknowledged the role played by the home crowd in Jalandhar, saying, “The energy from the crowd is infectious. Keep supporting us. Thank you, everyone.”
India will now face South Korea in their final league-stage fixture on Monday, November 2, at 7 PM IST. With four wins from four matches and a place in the semi-finals already secured, the defending champions will look to maintain their momentum before the knockout stage.
