The second day of the HSBC Rugby Premier League powered by Avid Season 2 delivered another entertaining evening of rugby at the Ganti Mohana Chandra Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Hyderabad, with the Hyderabad Heroes securing their first victory of the campaign and the Mumbai Dreamers maintaining their unbeaten start.

After suffering defeat in their opening fixture, the hosts responded in emphatic fashion with a 31-17 win over Delhi Redz, while Mumbai Dreamers produced another composed display to overcome Bengaluru Bravehearts 19-7, strengthening their position among the early frontrunners in the competition.

With fast-paced rugby, standout individual performances and passionate home support, the tournament continued to showcase the growing appeal of the sport in India.

Facing pressure to recover from an opening-day loss, Hyderabad Heroes wasted little time in asserting themselves against Delhi Redz. The hosts made a flying start through Sumit Kumar and experienced Australian playmaker Maurice Longbottom, whose early contributions helped establish momentum and energised the home crowd. Their aggressive attacking approach put Delhi under sustained pressure, forcing defensive errors and allowing Hyderabad to dictate the tempo during the opening exchanges.

As the first half progressed, Taitaifono Tavita extended the Heroes’ advantage with another well-worked score, giving the hosts a comfortable cushion.

Despite conceding early, Delhi Redz refused to let the contest slip away. The visitors mounted an impressive response led by Argentine star Luciano Gonzalez, whose attacking quality injected life into the Redz offence. He was well supported by Javed Hussain, with the pair helping reduce the deficit and bring Delhi back into contention. Their resurgence ensured Hyderabad could not afford to relax, setting up an intriguing second-half battle between two sides eager to establish themselves early in the season.

Hyderabad regained firm control after the interval through another crucial contribution from Taitaifono Tavita, whose second score of the evening restored breathing space for the home side. Although Patrick Odongo kept Delhi’s hopes alive by producing an important score for the Redz, Hyderabad maintained their composure and continued to execute their game plan effectively. The decisive moment arrived late in the contest when Wolfram Hacker crossed over for a try that effectively ended Delhi’s comeback hopes and sealed a deserved 31-17 victory.

The result gave Hyderabad their first points of the campaign and offered a significant confidence boost in front of their home supporters.

In the day’s other men’s fixture, Mumbai Dreamers extended their unbeaten run with an impressive 19-7 victory over Bengaluru Bravehearts. Mumbai controlled territory from the outset, applying sustained pressure that prevented the Bravehearts from establishing any attacking rhythm. Their persistence paid off when Lucas Mignot produced one of the standout moments of the evening, sprinting virtually the length of the field to score a spectacular try that handed Dreamers an early lead.

The score demonstrated both individual brilliance and Mumbai’s willingness to attack from deep positions.

Building on their strong start, Mumbai continued to dominate possession and field position. Just before the end of the opening quarter, Guillaume Bouche added another try to increase the Dreamers’ lead and place Bengaluru under significant pressure. The Bravehearts defended resolutely for long periods but struggled to convert possession into meaningful attacking opportunities against a disciplined Mumbai side.

The Dreamers’ defensive organisation proved equally impressive, consistently forcing turnovers and preventing Bengaluru from building sustained momentum.

Bengaluru eventually found a breakthrough after prolonged attacking pressure in the third quarter. Motu Opeta crossed the line to register the Bravehearts’ first try of the match, reducing the deficit and briefly raising hopes of a comeback. However, any momentum generated by that score was quickly extinguished.

Mumbai’s James Turner capitalised on a loose ball, showing outstanding awareness and pace to collect possession before racing over the try line. His score restored control to the Dreamers and effectively secured the 19-7 victory.

The result means Mumbai remain unbeaten after two matches and have established themselves as one of the early title contenders in Season 2.

Following the men’s fixtures, attention shifted to the women’s competition, where fans were treated to additional high-quality action featuring Chennai Bulls against Kolkata Banga Tigers and Delhi Redz versus Mumbai Dreamers. The introduction of women’s franchises has been one of the defining features of Rugby Premier League Season 2, reflecting the league’s commitment to expanding opportunities and promoting the growth of women’s rugby in India.

The day concluded with another men’s clash featuring Chennai Bulls and Kolkata Banga Tigers, rounding off a packed schedule of rugby action in Hyderabad.

With two days completed, the HSBC Rugby Premier League has already delivered competitive matches, thrilling finishes and standout individual performances. Hyderabad Heroes’ first victory demonstrated resilience after an opening setback, while Mumbai Dreamers continued to underline their credentials with another composed display.

As the tournament progresses, teams will look to build consistency in a tightly contested league where every result could prove decisive. For Indian rugby fans, the opening rounds have offered encouraging signs that Season 2 is set to be bigger, faster and more competitive than ever before.

With international stars combining with India’s best domestic talent, the Rugby Premier League is steadily strengthening its reputation as one of the country’s most exciting emerging sporting competitions.
