India finished fourth at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games with 61 medals, highlighted by dominance in wrestling, badminton, table tennis and weightlifting.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham marked another memorable chapter in India's sporting history. Competing in its 18th appearance at the Games, India finished fourth in the overall medal standings with an impressive haul of 61 medals, reaffirming its status as one of the Commonwealth's leading sporting nations.

India returned home with 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze medals, trailing only Australia, hosts England and Canada in the final standings. More importantly, the Games highlighted the country's increasing depth across multiple disciplines, as Indian athletes excelled in both traditional strengths and emerging sports.

The Birmingham edition also produced several historic firsts, breakout performances and unforgettable moments that reflected the continued growth of Indian sport.

Australia topped the medal standings with 179 medals, including 67 golds, while England finished second with 176 medals. Canada secured third place with 92 medals. India's tally of 61 medals was enough to comfortably finish ahead of New Zealand, Scotland, Nigeria, Wales, South Africa and Malaysia. While India's overall medal count was lower than some previous editions, the country remained among the elite sporting nations of the Commonwealth and continued its consistent record of finishing inside the top five.

India sent one of its strongest-ever Commonwealth Games contingents to Birmingham. A total of 210 athletes represented the country, comprising 106 men and 104 women, competing across 16 sports.

The contingent reflected India's expanding sporting ecosystem, with representation spread across combat sports, racquet sports, athletics, weightlifting, hockey, cricket, lawn bowls and para events. India did not participate in 3x3 basketball, beach volleyball, netball or rugby sevens, while the country's para-athletes competed in athletics, para-powerlifting, swimming and table tennis.

Leading the Indian contingent during the opening ceremony were Olympic medallists Manpreet Singh and P. V. Sindhu, who carried the national flag in Birmingham. The squad also featured remarkable diversity in age. Squash player Anahat Singh, at just 14 years old, became the youngest Indian athlete ever to compete at the Commonwealth Games, while lawn bowls player Sunil Bahadur, aged 45, was the oldest member of the team.

India's campaign began strongly in weightlifting. Sanket Sargar opened the country's medal account by winning silver, setting the tone for another successful Games. Soon after, Olympic silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu delivered India's first gold medal of Birmingham 2022 with another dominant performance in her weight category.

Weightlifting once again proved to be one of India's strongest disciplines, contributing significantly to the country's overall medal tally. The consistent performances reinforced India's reputation as one of the leading weightlifting nations within the Commonwealth.

Perhaps the most unexpected highlight of Birmingham 2022 came from the lawn bowls greens. India had never won a medal in the sport before. That changed dramatically when the Women's Fours team scripted history by capturing the country's maiden Commonwealth Games lawn bowls gold medal. The achievement became one of the defining stories of the Games and demonstrated how Indian athletes were beginning to challenge traditional powerhouses even in unfamiliar disciplines.

The success did not end there. The Men's Fours team followed with a silver medal, ensuring India concluded the Games with its first-ever medals in lawn bowls. The breakthrough represented one of the biggest surprises of Birmingham 2022.

If one athlete symbolised India's success in Birmingham, it was veteran table tennis star Sharath Kamal. The experienced paddler emerged as India's most successful athlete at the Games.

He won an outstanding four medals, including three golds and one silver, playing a pivotal role in India's continued dominance in table tennis. His performances once again demonstrated remarkable consistency at the highest level and cemented his legacy as one of India's greatest table tennis players.

Beyond individual performances, Birmingham highlighted India's growing strength across several sporting disciplines. The country finished as the best-performing nation in four sports:

  • Badminton

  • Table Tennis

  • Wrestling

  • Weightlifting

In addition, India finished second in boxing, continuing the country's impressive rise in one of its fastest-growing Olympic sports. Wrestling once again produced a rich medal haul, maintaining its position as one of India's most dependable sports at the Commonwealth Games. Similarly, badminton continued its upward trajectory, with Indian shuttlers consistently outperforming many of the world's strongest Commonwealth nations.

Table tennis further strengthened its reputation as a major medal contributor, while weightlifting once again justified expectations. The breadth of success across multiple sports reflected years of investment in athlete development, coaching and international exposure.

Although Birmingham 2022 proved highly successful, it also highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum. Several athletes who excelled at the Games have since continued representing India at Asian Games, World Championships and Olympic qualification events. The performances also provided confidence heading into future multi-sport competitions, particularly the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic cycle.

However, looking ahead to Glasgow 2026, India faces a significantly different challenge. Several of the sports that contributed heavily to the 2022 medal tally, including badminton, wrestling, table tennis and cricket, have been removed from the programme. This means Indian athletes will have fewer opportunities to replicate Birmingham's medal success.

Instead, sports such as boxing, weightlifting, athletics, judo and swimming are expected to shoulder greater responsibility. Despite those future challenges, Birmingham 2022 remains one of India's strongest Commonwealth Games performances.

The Games showcased established champions, celebrated historic firsts and introduced promising young talent capable of carrying Indian sport into the future. From Mirabai Chanu's golden start to the historic lawn bowls breakthrough and Sharath Kamal's remarkable medal haul, Birmingham offered countless moments that reflected India's growing sporting maturity.

Finishing fourth overall while emerging as the leading nation in four sports demonstrated not only India's traditional strengths but also its increasing ability to compete across a broad spectrum of disciplines. As preparations begin for Glasgow 2026 and beyond, Birmingham 2022 will continue to be remembered as a benchmark for Indian sporting excellence on the Commonwealth stage.
