India lost 1-6 to Senegal in its final Group K match at the FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival in Baku, finishing third with 10 points.

India suffered a 1-6 defeat against Senegal in its fifth and final Group K match at the FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival in Baku on Monday, bringing its group-stage campaign to a disappointing conclusion after an otherwise competitive run.

The defeat, combined with Cameroon’s 2-0 victory over Bahrain, left India third in Group K with 10 points from five matches. Cameroon and Senegal finished first and second, respectively, with 12 points each, securing places in Tiers A and B for the tournament’s next stage. India will compete in Tier C, where it will battle for positions between 65th and 96th.

The result marked a difficult end to India’s group campaign, with Senegal’s clinical attacking display proving decisive. Abdoulaye Diallo scored four goals, including a first-half hat-trick, while Georges Kanfom and Pierre Mbengue added one each. Ronandev Aheibam scored India’s only goal.

The opening five minutes offered a relatively even contest, but Senegal gradually took control and began to exploit gaps in the Indian defence. The breakthrough arrived in the ninth minute when Diallo received a pass from the right, advanced into the penalty area and beat goalkeeper Jenit Ningthoujam from a narrow angle.

The goal was significant for India, which had not trailed in any of its previous four matches at the tournament. Once Senegal moved ahead, the Blue Colts struggled to contain the opposition’s attacking momentum.

Diallo doubled Senegal’s advantage just two minutes later. Dribbling into the box from the left, he unleashed a powerful left-footed strike into the far top corner, leaving India with an early two-goal deficit.

Senegal continued to find space in dangerous areas. In the 14th minute, Mbengue delivered a defence-splitting through ball for Kanfom. The forward took a touch, rounded the advancing Jenit and finished into an unguarded net to make it 3-0.

Diallo completed his hat-trick in the 18th minute, sweeping home a cutback from Kanfom after the latter reached the left by-line. Senegal’s attacking combinations repeatedly exposed India’s defensive structure, allowing the African side to build a commanding lead before the half-hour mark.

Mbengue made it five in the 23rd minute. Jenit initially denied the Senegal midfielder in a one-on-one situation, but the rebound fell kindly to Mbengue, who converted at the second attempt. Diallo then completed his four-goal performance in the 31st minute. Receiving a pass from Kanfom inside the box, he used a feint to create room before finishing to put Senegal firmly in control at 6-0.

Ronandev Provides a Response

India found a response almost immediately after conceding the sixth goal. Two minutes after Diallo’s fourth strike, the Blue Colts launched a counter-attack that produced their only goal of the match.

Deepak Singh Arambam drove a low cross into the penalty area, where Ronandev Aheibam slid in to connect with a first-time finish in the 33rd minute. The goal gave India something to show for its attacking effort, although the deficit remained substantial.

Senegal’s six goals reflected its efficiency in the final third, particularly during a devastating first-half spell. India, meanwhile, was unable to recover from the early setback and prevent the opposition from extending its lead.

Despite the heavy defeat, India finished the group stage with 10 points from five matches, enough to secure third place in Group K. Cameroon topped the group after beating Bahrain 2-0, finishing level on 12 points with Senegal but taking first place. Senegal secured second spot.

The tournament’s tier system now determines the next phase for the teams. Cameroon will compete in Tier A and Senegal in Tier B, while India enters Tier C to contest positions 65th to 96th.

Bahrain and Laos, both finishing with four points, will move into Tiers D and E, respectively. Grenada finished last with one point and will compete in Tier F.

For India, the final group match will serve as a reminder of the need to maintain defensive organisation against teams capable of sustaining pressure and converting chances quickly. The Blue Colts had reached the final fixture without trailing in their first four matches, but Senegal’s early breakthrough changed the contest dramatically.

India will now look to regroup for the Tier C stage and finish the tournament on a stronger note.
