India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 remain alive despite a 1-3 defeat to co-hosts the Netherlands in their opening Pool E match of Stage 2 at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen.

India had entered Saturday’s match knowing that defeat would leave their campaign in a precarious position. The Netherlands’ victory moved them to six points and confirmed their place in the semi-finals, while India remained without a point after carrying none from the first stage.

However, Argentina’s 3-1 victory over England later in the day has kept India mathematically alive in the race for the second semi-final spot from Pool E.

The result leaves England and Argentina on three points each, while India remain on zero. With one round of matches remaining, India will now face Argentina in a must-win encounter and will need the remaining permutations to work in their favour to have any chance of progressing.

Against the Netherlands, India competed strongly for long periods but were punished for defensive errors and an inability to convert enough of their penalty corner opportunities.

The match remained goalless for more than two quarters before Duco Telgenkamp broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. Tjep Hoedemakers doubled the Dutch advantage in the final quarter before Harmanpreet Singh brought India back into the contest from a penalty corner. Thijs van Dam, however, restored the Netherlands’ two-goal cushion soon after to seal a 3-1 victory.

India began the match with an aggressive approach, pressing high and looking to disrupt the Netherlands in possession. Both teams moved the ball at pace during an energetic opening quarter, with India making early circle entries. Dilpreet Singh had one of India’s first promising moments in the 10th minute when he received the ball inside the Dutch circle. However, he held onto possession for too long and lost the opportunity.

A minute later, Floris Wortelboer registered the first shot on target for the Netherlands, but India remained organised at the back.

The hosts earned the first penalty corner in the 13th minute, but India defended it superbly. Sumit produced an excellent rush to block Jip Janssen’s drag-flick before Sanjay completed the clearance.

The first quarter ended 0-0 after a closely contested battle. The Netherlands began to enjoy greater possession in the second quarter and put the Indian defence under sustained pressure. Another Dutch penalty corner in the 16th minute saw Manpreet Singh make two important blocks to deny Janssen.

India, however, had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 23rd minute. Dilpreet found himself with a clear chance inside the circle but rushed his effort, allowing the Dutch goalkeeper to make the save. Rajinder Singh reacted to the rebound but could not retain possession. The Netherlands also created a promising opening in the 28th minute after finding space to the right of the Indian goal, but the angle proved too tight and the danger was cleared.

The score remained 0-0 at half-time.

Netherlands strike after Indian pressure

India earned their first penalty corner in the 35th minute after a successful video referral overturned the initial long-corner decision. Captain Harmanpreet Singh came on to take the drag-flick, but the Dutch rushers blocked his attempt. India retained possession and earned another penalty corner after a further referral for a foot inside the circle. Harmanpreet’s next attempt, however, went wide.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 41st minute. A defensive miscommunication created space inside the Indian circle, and Telgenkamp capitalised to put the Netherlands ahead. The goal gave the co-hosts momentum and lifted the packed Wagener Stadium. India responded by earning another penalty corner but Harmanpreet was again denied by the Dutch rushers. The third quarter ended with the Netherlands holding a narrow 1-0 advantage.

India continued to search for an equaliser in the final quarter and earned another penalty corner through a move initiated by Sanjay. Amit Rohidas took the direct hit, with the attempt saved near the post. A subsequent referral gave India another penalty corner, and Harmanpreet’s powerful flick was brilliantly stopped by Dutch goalkeeper Derk Meijer. The Netherlands then doubled their advantage in the 51st minute. Koen Bijen delivered a precise ball from the right, and Hoedemakers produced the crucial touch in front of goal to beat Mohith HS.

India refused to give up. Another penalty corner followed soon after, and after the first attempt was blocked, India earned a fresh opportunity when the ball struck a Dutch foot. Harmanpreet made no mistake this time, beating Meijer to his right to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The comeback hopes were short-lived. Four minutes later, Manpreet was dispossessed in midfield, and the Netherlands immediately launched a counter-attack. Van Dam finished the move with a composed volley past Mohith to make it 3-1. India pushed forward in the closing stages but could not find another breakthrough.

The Argentina result gives India a lifeline.

The defeat initially left India facing the possibility of immediate elimination from the semi-final race. However, Argentina’s 3-1 win over England has ensured that India’s campaign is still alive. India will now face Argentina in their final Pool E match, with victory essential. The result between the Netherlands and England will also play a crucial role in deciding whether India can complete an unlikely route into the semi-finals.

The margin for error is now extremely small, but Argentina’s victory has given India something they needed after the defeat in Amstelveen: a lifeline. For India, the focus will now shift entirely to the Argentina match. A win is non-negotiable, and after a fighting performance against the Netherlands, the team will need to convert its pressure into goals while eliminating the defensive mistakes that proved costly against the co-hosts.
