The Indian Super League 2025-26 title race heads into a dramatic final night on Thursday as Mohun Bagan Super Giant prepare for a must-win clash against Sporting Club Delhi at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.

With five teams still mathematically capable of winning the league title, the ISL season has produced one of the tightest finishes in recent memory. But for Mohun Bagan, the equation is both simple and complicated at the same time they must defeat SC Delhi first, and then hope other results swing in their favour.

The match, kicking off at 7:30 PM IST, could potentially decide whether the Mariners complete a historic third consecutive ISL league title or watch rivals East Bengal claim the crown instead.

Mohun Bagan enter the final round second in the standings with 23 points from 12 matches, level with East Bengal but trailing on goal difference. That goal difference gap may ultimately prove decisive. East Bengal currently hold a superior +18 goal difference compared to Mohun Bagan’s +13, meaning Sergio Lobera’s side not only need to win but potentially score heavily if East Bengal also secure victory against Inter Kashi.

The permutations remain complex:

  • If Mohun Bagan win and East Bengal drop points, the Mariners become champions.

  • If both Kolkata giants win, Bagan may need a massive margin depending on East Bengal’s scoreline.

  • A 6-0 Mohun Bagan win combined with a narrow East Bengal victory could potentially swing the title race dramatically.

  • There are also scenarios involving Mumbai City and Punjab FC that could influence the final standings.

Despite the mathematical chaos surrounding the final day, Lobera insisted the focus inside the dressing room remains straightforward.

“We need to believe,” the Spaniard said ahead of the game. “To be honest, we are not in the scenario we wanted to be in, but there are still options. When there are options, we need to fight for them.”

Mohun Bagan’s preparations have also been affected by injury concerns involving key players. Lobera confirmed that midfielder Lalengmawia Ralte, popularly known as Apuia, is unlikely to feature after failing to recover full fitness in time for the game. Australian forward Jason Cummings also remains doubtful.

“About Apuia, most probably he is not going to play because he is not fit for tomorrow’s game,” Lobera said. “About Jason, we will try in the last training session. It will be difficult, but not impossible. Maybe he can play.”

The absence of Apuia would represent a significant blow in midfield, especially in a match where Mohun Bagan are expected to dominate possession and chase goals aggressively.

With the title race likely to come down to goals, Mohun Bagan will once again rely heavily on their experienced attacking unit led by Dimitri Petratos and Jamie Maclaren. Petratos, one of the club’s most influential players during their recent successful seasons, emphasized the importance of staying mentally focused despite the pressure surrounding the final day.

“We just have to go out there and give everything, focus on ourselves and do our best,” Petratos said. “We will stick to the plan and go for it.”

The Australian also stressed that belief remains high within the squad despite not controlling their own destiny.

“The motivation is obviously high. We have an opportunity to go out there and win the league,” he added. “Anything is possible. It is all about having a positive mindset. You never know what can happen in football.”

That belief could become critical because Mohun Bagan not only need victory they may need one of their most clinical attacking performances of the season.

While Mohun Bagan carry the pressure of the title race, Sporting Club Delhi arrive in Kolkata with freedom and motivation of their own. The visitors have little at stake in terms of standings but now possess the opportunity to directly influence the championship race. Head coach Tomasz Tchorz made it clear that SC Delhi have no intention of simply participating in the occasion.

“We obviously want to win and try to finish in a better position,” Tchorz said. “We know Mohun Bagan need to win and it will be a tough competition. But we have a mix of young and experienced players, we are disciplined and we have trained hard.”

“I think it is possible to beat Mohun Bagan. The game will be open and we will go for a win.”

That approach could make the contest even more dangerous for the Mariners. If SC Delhi choose to attack openly instead of sitting deep defensively, the game could turn into a high-scoring encounter exactly the kind of match Mohun Bagan may need if goal difference becomes decisive.

Kolkata Awaits One More Dramatic Night

The atmosphere inside Salt Lake Stadium is expected to be intense. Kolkata has spent the last few days battling extreme summer heat, but inside the stadium, the emotional tension surrounding the ISL title race will likely eclipse the weather itself. For Mohun Bagan supporters, the situation is clear:
their team must first take care of business.

Only then can they hope the rest of the league table shifts in their favour.

After months of football, the ISL 2025-26 title race now comes down to one final night where every goal, every save, and every late twist could decide the destiny of the championship.
