Reliance Foundation Sends Top RFDL Teams to Japan, Strengthening India's Youth Football Pathway

Reliance Foundation has taken another significant step towards strengthening India's football development ecosystem by announcing an international exposure tour to Japan for the top three teams from the 2025-26 Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL).
The initiative reflects the Foundation's long-term vision of creating a structured pathway for young Indian footballers to transition from domestic youth competitions to international football. Following an impressive RFDL campaign, Bengaluru FC, FC Goa and Punjab FC have earned the opportunity to compete against some of Japan's leading youth academies during a two-week tour scheduled from July 11 to July 23 in Fukuoka.
The exposure trip is designed to provide India's brightest U-21 footballers with valuable experience against technically superior opposition while also enhancing the knowledge of Indian coaches through dedicated education programmes.
Japan has long been regarded as one of Asia's leading football nations, with its youth development structure consistently producing players capable of succeeding in the J.League and major European competitions.
The three Indian clubs will face strong opposition during the tour, taking on Avispa Fukuoka U18, Sagan Tosu U18, Giravanz Kitakyushu U18 and FC Baleine Shimonoseki U21. Each of these clubs has established youth systems that place significant emphasis on technical ability, tactical discipline and player development. For India's young footballers, the matches will provide a valuable benchmark, allowing them to assess their level against one of the continent's most successful football development ecosystems.
Beyond the results, the experience is expected to expose players to different tactical approaches, faster decision-making and higher levels of technical execution.
This is not the first time Reliance Foundation has created overseas opportunities for young Indian footballers. Over the past few years, RFDL teams have travelled to England, where they competed against youth sides from several renowned clubs. Punjab FC, one of the three teams selected for the Japan tour, previously participated in an exposure trip to the United Kingdom in 2024. The club produced impressive performances during that tour, recording victories over the youth teams of Everton FC and Aston Villa, demonstrating the value of international competition in accelerating player development.
Having already benefited from overseas exposure, Punjab FC enters the Japan tour with experience that could prove valuable.
The club is widely recognised for one of the strongest grassroots football programmes in the country and has consistently invested in youth development.
Punjab FC youth team head coach Praveen Kumar believes the tour will offer much more than competitive matches. Reflecting on the opportunity, he highlighted the importance of learning from Japan's highly organised football system.
"The Japanese youth football system is properly structured. We went to the UK last time and had players like Pramveer and Md. Suhail who were part of the squad that time and had a great learning opportunity."
He also praised Reliance Foundation's continued investment in youth football.
"Reliance Foundation is bridging the gap between youth football and senior level through competitions and exposure tours like this and I think we are going to have a good challenge and learning opportunity against tactically and technically sound teams in Japan."
His comments underline the broader objective of these tours—not merely competing internationally but helping players understand the standards required to succeed at the highest level.
Recognising that strong player development depends heavily on well-trained coaches, Reliance Foundation has incorporated a dedicated coach education programme into the tour. Six coaches from the participating clubs will undertake a three-day learning module at Avispa Fukuoka. The programme will focus on several key areas, including individual development plans, player progression and the creation of high-performance environments.
The participating coaches will also interact with the football director of FC Machida Zelvia, whose remarkable rise from Japan's J2 League to the AFC Champions League Elite Final within three years has attracted widespread attention across Asian football. Such interactions provide Indian coaches with practical insights into long-term planning, talent development and professional football management.
The knowledge gained is expected to benefit not only the coaches themselves but also the hundreds of young players they work with upon returning to India.
The Japan tour has also been designed to offer broader educational experiences beyond football. The Indian delegation will visit the Nagasaki Peace Stadium, the Atomic Bomb Museum and the historic Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. These visits reflect Reliance Foundation's holistic approach to athlete development, recognising that exposure to different cultures and historical perspectives contributes to the overall growth of young sportspersons.
Such experiences encourage players to develop greater maturity, cultural awareness and adaptability qualities that become increasingly important in modern professional sport.
Since its inception, the Reliance Foundation Development League has evolved into one of India's most important youth football competitions. The league provides structured, high-quality competition for U-21 players while creating opportunities for clubs to develop future first-team footballers. International exposure tours such as this strengthen that pathway by adding another layer of development between domestic youth football and senior professional competition.
Rather than relying solely on local competition, India's most promising footballers now have opportunities to regularly test themselves against strong international opponents.
The initiative also reflects a growing understanding that player development requires sustained exposure to higher standards rather than isolated training camps.
As Indian football continues its long-term journey towards competing consistently at the highest levels in Asia, initiatives like the Japan exposure tour could play an important role in narrowing the gap. Japan's sustained success in youth football provides an ideal benchmark for India's next generation of players and coaches.
By combining competitive matches, coach education and cultural learning within a single programme, Reliance Foundation has created a comprehensive development model that extends beyond short-term results.
For Bengaluru FC, FC Goa and Punjab FC, the upcoming tour represents an opportunity to measure themselves against some of Asia's finest young talent. More importantly, it offers a glimpse of the standards required to succeed on the international stage and reinforces the Reliance Foundation Development League's growing role in shaping the future of Indian football.
