Indian women's hockey has witnessed several iconic leaders over the years, but only a select few have had the privilege of lifting an International Hockey Federation (FIH) title as captain. That exclusive club has now welcomed a new member.

Following India's triumph at the 2026 FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup in Auckland, Salima Tete became just the fourth captain in the history of Indian women's hockey to guide the national team to an FIH championship. The achievement places her alongside legends Surinder Kaur, Rani Rampal, and Savita Punia, who each captained India to landmark international titles during different phases of the team's evolution.

More than just another trophy, the Nations Cup victory symbolises India's successful transition into a new era under one of the country's youngest captains and highlights the continued growth of the women's programme on the international stage.

India's history in FIH competitions has been marked by only four title-winning captains:

  • 2009 – Surinder Kaur (FIH Champions Challenge II)

  • 2019 – Rani Rampal (FIH Series Finals)

  • 2022 – Savita Punia (FIH Nations Cup)

  • 2026 – Salima Tete (FIH Nations Cup)

Each captain represents a distinct chapter in the development of Indian women's hockey, reflecting how the team has transformed from continental challengers into consistent competitors on the global stage.

India's first major FIH title came in 2009 under the leadership of Surinder Kaur. Captaining the side at the inaugural FIH Champions Challenge II in Kazan, Russia, Surinder led an attacking Indian outfit that dominated throughout the tournament. India defeated Belgium 6-3 in the final to lift the title and secure promotion to the higher-tier Champions Challenge competition.

Surinder's leadership combined experience with aggressive attacking hockey while also helping nurture a young generation of players that included a teenage Rani Rampal, who emerged as the tournament's leading scorer. The triumph demonstrated that India could not only compete internationally but also win major FIH events consistently.

A decade later, Rani Rampal led India to another defining triumph at the 2019 FIH Series Finals in Hiroshima. By then, Rani had become the face of Indian women's hockey, inspiring a generation through both her performances and leadership. India produced a dominant campaign before defeating hosts Japan 3-1 in the final to claim the title and, more importantly, secure qualification for the Olympic qualifiers.

That tournament proved to be a turning point. The confidence gained under Rani's captaincy laid the foundation for India's historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics, widely regarded as the team's greatest performance at the Games. Her leadership transformed India into a side capable of believing it belonged among the world's elite.

Savita Punia Built a Defensive Identity

Following the Tokyo Olympics, goalkeeper Savita Punia took over the captaincy during a period of transition. Unlike her predecessors, Savita led from the back, using her vast international experience to organise one of India's strongest defensive units. Her defining moment came during the 2022 FIH Nations Cup in Valencia.

India remained unbeaten throughout the competition before defeating hosts Spain 1-0 in the final to win the inaugural Nations Cup and earn promotion to the FIH Pro League. Savita's outstanding performances earned her the tournament's Best Goalkeeper award, while her calm leadership became a defining characteristic of India's defensive resilience.

The victory reaffirmed India's status among the world's leading hockey nations.

When Salima Tete was appointed captain in 2026, she inherited a young squad eager to return to the FIH Pro League following relegation. The midfielder from Simdega, Jharkhand, quickly stamped her identity on the team. Known for her exceptional speed, relentless energy, and tireless work rate, Salima led by example throughout the 2026 FIH Nations Cup in Auckland.

India won all five matches during the tournament, defeating the United States, Japan, Uruguay, Chile, and finally hosts New Zealand in the championship match. The 2-0 victory in the final not only secured the title but also guaranteed India's immediate return to the FIH Pro League, which serves as an important qualification pathway towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Under Salima's captaincy, India combined high pressing, quick transitions, and disciplined defending to produce one of its most complete tournament performances in recent years.

While each captain possessed different strengths, together they represent the evolution of Indian women's hockey. Surinder Kaur established belief through attacking hockey.

Rani Rampal instilled confidence and a winning mentality on the biggest stages. Savita Punia built defensive discipline and consistency.

Salima Tete has introduced a faster, more athletic style suited to the demands of modern international hockey. Together, these four leaders have helped transform India from a team capable of occasional upsets into one that regularly competes for medals at the highest level.

Salima Tete's inclusion alongside some of the greatest names in Indian women's hockey is a testament to both her leadership and the team's remarkable progress. At just 24 years of age, she has already captained India to an FIH title while guiding a new generation of players through a flawless Nations Cup campaign. With promotion back to the FIH Pro League secured and the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics now underway, Salima's achievement could mark the beginning of another successful era for Indian women's hockey.

Joining Surinder Kaur, Rani Rampal, and Savita Punia on the list of FIH title-winning captains is more than a personal milestone—it is a reflection of India's continued rise as one of the strongest teams in world hockey and another reminder that the country's leadership legacy remains in safe hands.
