India have suffered a major blow at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with Shreyanka Patil ruled out due to an ankle injury. Uncapped leg-spinner Prema Rawat has been approved as her replacement for the remainder of the tournament.

India’s Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign has suffered a setback with all-rounder Shreyanka Patil being ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to an ankle injury. The off-spinning all-rounder sustained the injury during India’s group-stage match against the Netherlands and will take no further part in the competition.

To fill the vacancy, the Event Technical Committee has approved the inclusion of Prema Rawat, an uncapped leg-spinner who has impressed consistently in domestic cricket and India A assignments. The replacement was officially ratified late on June 18, providing India with a fresh spin option ahead of the crucial stages of the tournament.

The injury occurred during India’s emphatic victory over the Netherlands when Shreyanka was forced to leave the field after bowling just a single delivery. Her early exit immediately raised concerns about the severity of the issue, and those fears have now been confirmed with the announcement that she will miss the rest of the World Cup.

Shreyanka’s absence is a significant loss for the Indian side. Over the last two years, she has established herself as one of India’s most dependable white-ball cricketers, contributing with both the ball and in the lower order with the bat.

Her ability to break partnerships through clever variations and maintain control during the middle overs has made her a valuable asset in India’s T20 setup. Losing a player who offers balance in both departments inevitably forces the team management to reassess its combinations heading into the business end of the tournament.

The injury, however, opens the door for Prema Rawat, who earns her first senior World Cup call-up after steadily climbing through India’s domestic and developmental pathways. A leg-spinner by trade, Prema has built an impressive résumé despite not yet making her senior international debut. She was part of the successful India A squad that won the Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars tournament, where she claimed eight wickets in five matches to emerge as one of the team’s standout performers.

Her consistency was further evident during India A’s tour of Australia last year, where she finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker with seven wickets in just three matches. Those performances strengthened her reputation as one of India’s most promising young spin bowlers.

Prema has also showcased her talent in the Women’s Premier League, representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where her leg-spin and ability to generate breakthroughs attracted considerable attention.

Now, she has the opportunity to translate that promise onto the biggest stage in women’s T20 cricket.

Despite losing Shreyanka, India have enjoyed an excellent start to the Women’s T20 World Cup. The team has won both of its opening Group 1 fixtures in convincing fashion. They began the tournament with a commanding 64-run victory over Pakistan before producing another dominant display to defeat the Netherlands by 95 runs, powered by explosive batting and disciplined bowling performances.

Those victories have placed India at the top of the group standings, giving them valuable momentum ahead of tougher fixtures in the competition. The next assignment will be against South Africa at Old Trafford in Manchester on June 21, a match that could prove crucial in determining the final standings in the group.

Although both Shreyanka and Prema are spin bowlers, they bring different skill sets to the team. Shreyanka’s off-spin has often been complemented by her utility as a lower-order batter, allowing India additional flexibility in team balance. Prema, on the other hand, is primarily a specialist leg-spinner capable of attacking batters and generating wicket-taking opportunities through turn and variation.

Her inclusion could provide captain Harmanpreet Kaur with another aggressive bowling option, particularly on surfaces expected to assist slower bowlers.

However, adapting quickly to World Cup cricket will be essential. Replacing an experienced international in the middle of a major tournament is never straightforward, and Prema will need to settle rapidly if called upon.

Prema’s promotion to the senior national side has also led to changes in India A’s squads for the upcoming series against England A. The Women’s Selection Committee has named Niki Prasad in the India A T20 squad, while Minnu Mani has been drafted into the India A One-Day squad to maintain balance following Prema’s elevation.

These adjustments underline the healthy depth currently available in Indian women’s cricket, with multiple players progressing through the developmental system and earning opportunities at higher levels.

While Shreyanka Patil’s injury is undoubtedly unfortunate, it also presents India with an opportunity to showcase the strength of its bench. Prema Rawat’s selection reflects the confidence the selectors have in the emerging generation of players who have consistently performed in domestic competitions and India A assignments.

For Shreyanka, the focus will now shift to rehabilitation and recovery. For Prema, meanwhile, this represents the biggest opportunity of her young career—a chance to make an immediate impact on the global stage and contribute to India’s pursuit of a maiden Women’s T20 World Cup title.

With two wins already in the bag and a talented replacement stepping into the squad, India will hope the disruption does not derail its momentum as the tournament enters a decisive phase.
