South Africa Stun India by 6 Wickets in Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 as Marizanne Kapp Produces Match-Winning All-Round Masterclass

Marizanne Kapp starred with 2 wickets and an unbeaten 81 as South Africa defeated India by six wickets in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
South Africa reignited their Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a memorable six-wicket victory over India in Manchester, thanks to a sensational all-round display from Marizanne Kapp.
The veteran all-rounder first played a key role with the ball, returning figures of 2/27, before producing one of the finest innings of the tournament with an unbeaten 81 off 45 deliveries to guide the Proteas to 161/4 in 19.1 overs.
The result marked South Africa’s highest successful run chase in Women’s T20 World Cup history and handed India their first defeat of the campaign after an otherwise impressive start to the tournament.
After being asked to bat first, India looked set for a commanding total as openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma attacked from the outset. The pair raced to 23 runs inside the first two overs, putting immediate pressure on the South African bowlers. However, Marizanne Kapp provided the breakthrough at the perfect time. Mandhana attempted an audacious scoop shot but exposed her stumps, allowing Kapp to strike and halt India’s momentum.
The pressure intensified when Shabnim Ismail dismissed the dangerous Shafali Verma, who had smashed 31 runs with four boundaries and a six. Although India finished the powerplay at a healthy 59/2, they failed to convert the platform into a match-winning total.
The middle overs belonged firmly to South Africa’s disciplined pace attack. Kapp and Ismail repeatedly forced India’s batters into mistakes, ensuring boundaries became increasingly difficult to find. Every Indian batter managed to get starts but none could play a defining innings. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, playing her landmark 200th T20 International, contributed 24 runs before falling at a crucial stage.
Deepti Sharma added valuable late runs with a brisk 29, helping India cross the 150-run mark and finish at 158/7 from their 20 overs. Yet considering their explosive start, the total appeared below par.
South Africa’s bowlers deserve immense credit for the turnaround, conceding only 76 runs while taking four wickets in the final ten overs. Kapp finished with 2/27, while Ismail matched her impact with figures of 2/28.
India responded strongly with the ball and quickly put South Africa under pressure. Tight bowling in the opening overs restricted the scoring rate before Sree Charani produced a dream over that briefly swung the contest in India’s favour. The left-arm spinner removed Laura Wolvaardt and another batter in a double-wicket maiden, reducing South Africa to 25/2 by the end of the powerplay. At that stage, India appeared firmly in control with the Proteas needing stability as well as acceleration.
But Marizanne Kapp had other ideas.
Walking in under pressure, Kapp immediately looked composed despite the challenging situation. Instead of forcing strokes, she and Tazmin Brits focused on rotating strike, finding gaps and steadily rebuilding the innings. The pair stitched together a match-defining 97-run partnership that transformed the complexion of the chase. As the required run rate climbed, both batters shifted gears seamlessly.
Brits contributed a valuable 40, complementing Kapp’s measured aggression. By the time India managed to break the partnership through Shafali Verma’s golden arm, South Africa had regained complete control of the contest.
Even after losing Brits and later Nadine de Klerk, Kapp never allowed India back into the match. Her calm presence and exceptional game awareness ensured South Africa remained ahead of the required rate. The defining moment came in the penultimate over when South Africa required 18 runs from the final two overs. Facing Deepti Sharma, one of the leading wicket-takers in women’s international cricket, Kapp launched two towering sixes that effectively sealed the result.
She finished unbeaten on 81 from just 45 balls, an innings featuring four sixes and numerous authoritative strokes under pressure.
Chloe Tryon eventually hit the winning boundary as South Africa reached 161/4 with five balls to spare, sparking jubilant celebrations in the Proteas camp.
Missed Opportunity for India
For India, the defeat will prompt reflection rather than panic. The team began strongly with both bat and ball but failed to capitalise on crucial phases.
The batting innings lost momentum after the powerplay, with no player converting a promising start into a substantial score. On the bowling front, despite reducing South Africa to 25/2, India struggled to break the Kapp-Brits partnership that ultimately decided the match.
Sree Charani’s impressive spell of 3/24 remained one of the positives on an otherwise disappointing evening.
The victory breathes new life into South Africa’s World Cup campaign after an inconsistent start and lifts them into serious semi-final contention in Group A. More importantly, it demonstrates their ability to chase challenging totals under pressure against one of the tournament favourites.
India, meanwhile, remain well placed in the standings despite suffering their first loss of the competition. However, the match exposed areas requiring improvement, particularly in consolidating strong starts with the bat and finding breakthroughs during crucial partnerships.
Ultimately, the night belonged to Marizanne Kapp. Her exceptional all-round contribution two wickets with the ball and a match-winning unbeaten 81 with the bat ranked among the finest individual performances of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 and reminded the cricketing world why she remains one of the game’s premier all-rounders.
