Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal has once again reminded the tennis world why he remains the country's leading men's singles player. The 28-year-old captured the Târgu Mureș ATP Challenger 75 title in Romania, defeating France's Felix Balshaw 6-3, 7-5 in the final to claim the seventh ATP Challenger singles title of his career.

The victory marks a significant milestone in Nagal's journey. It is his first Challenger title since June 2024, his fifth Challenger crown on clay, and his fourth ATP Challenger title in Europe. More importantly, the triumph has propelled him 66 places up the ATP Rankings to World No. 219, putting him firmly back in contention for a place in the qualifying draw of the US Open later this summer.

After a difficult period marked by injuries, inconsistent results and a drop in the rankings, the Romanian title feels like the beginning of another chapter in Nagal's career.

Nagal's path to the title was anything but straightforward. He was tested in every round, repeatedly showing the resilience and fighting spirit that have defined his career.

His campaign began with a three-set victory over Croatia's Mili Poljičak, where Nagal recovered after dropping the second set to win 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. The second round presented another stern examination against Lebanon's Benjamin Hassan. After losing the opening set 1-6, Nagal once again refused to panic. He gradually found his rhythm from the baseline before completing an impressive comeback to win 6-4, 6-4.

Perhaps his toughest challenge came in the quarter-finals against Croatia's Duje Ajduković. Trailing by a set, Nagal once again demonstrated exceptional composure, recovering to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 and book his place in the semi-finals.

His confidence continued to grow. In the semi-finals, he defeated Romania's Cezar Crețu 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, producing a dominant deciding set to move within one victory of another Challenger title.

Standing between Nagal and the trophy was one of the hottest players on the Challenger circuit. Twenty-year-old Felix Balshaw had entered the tournament through qualifying and reached the final after an extraordinary run that included victories over several higher-ranked opponents. However, Nagal's experience proved decisive.

The Indian controlled the opening set with disciplined baseline tennis, consistently targeting Balshaw's one-handed backhand and forcing errors from the French youngster.

He claimed the first set 6-3 before surviving a tougher challenge in the second. Although Balshaw created several opportunities, Nagal remained composed during the crucial moments to close out the match 7-5. One statistic perfectly summed up the final. Balshaw converted only two of his eighteen break-point opportunities, while Nagal was clinical whenever the match demanded composure.

The Romanian triumph was significant not only because of the ranking points but also because of what it means historically. With seven ATP Challenger singles titles, Nagal has now moved into joint second place among Indian players with the most ATP Challenger singles titles. It is another remarkable achievement for a player who has consistently carried Indian men's singles tennis over the past decade. His latest success also makes him the only Indian player to win five ATP Challenger titles on clay, underlining his reputation as India's finest clay-court player of the modern era.

Only a handful of Indian players have enjoyed sustained success on the Challenger circuit, and Nagal has firmly established himself among that elite group.

The ranking boost to World No. 219 could prove just as valuable as the trophy itself. The 66-place jump significantly improves Nagal's chances of entering qualifying draws at major ATP Tour events, particularly the US Open, where the ranking cut-off is expected to be within reach. With several tournaments still to play before the final entry list is confirmed, Nagal now controls his own destiny.

Another strong Challenger result could comfortably secure his place in New York.

The Romanian title once again highlighted Nagal's exceptional comfort on clay. Five of his seven ATP Challenger titles have now come on the surface, a remarkable record for an Indian player. His patient rally construction, heavy topspin forehand and ability to defend deep behind the baseline continue to make him one of the toughest competitors on European clay courts.

Few Indian men's singles players have achieved comparable consistency on the Challenger Tour, particularly on the demanding European circuit.

Perhaps the biggest positive from the week in Romania is the confidence Nagal will carry into the remainder of the season. Winning five consecutive matches against quality opposition after battling through multiple three-set contests demonstrates both physical fitness and mental resilience. The title also sends an important message to the rest of the Challenger Tour Sumit Nagal is once again a serious contender.

After ending a two-year wait for another Challenger crown, India's No. 1 has firmly placed himself back among the leading players outside the ATP Tour. With the US Open qualifying event approaching and valuable ranking points still available over the coming weeks, Nagal's season suddenly looks full of promise.

Romania may have delivered another trophy, but for Sumit Nagal, it could also mark the beginning of another climb towards the highest level of professional tennis.
