Suruchi Phogat: The Rise of India's World No. 1 Shooter

Discover the inspiring journey of Indian pistol shooter Suruchi Phogat, from her origins in Jhajjar to breaking world records and reaching World No. 1.
The Foundations of a Champion
In the quiet village of Sasroli within the Jhajjar district of Haryana, athletic dedication is deeply woven into daily life
At thirteen years of age, Suruchi picked up a pistol for the first time. Without an official jersey or personal sponsor, she began traveling nearly one hundred kilometers every day by local train alongside her father and brothers. They commuted to the Guru Dronacharya Shooting Academy in Bhiwani, where coach Suresh Singh, an Army veteran himself, undertook the task of building her technical foundation
The Rise to International Stardom
Suruchi signaled her entry into elite competition at the National Championships in New Delhi during December 2024
She won three consecutive individual gold medals at the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cups in Buenos Aires, Lima, and Munich
Her momentum continued into 2026 as she captured team gold and mixed team silver alongside Samrat Rana at the Asian Championship in New Delhi. Shortly after, she claimed individual gold at the 2026 Munich World Cup leading an Indian double podium finish alongside teammate Esha Singh, securing direct qualification for the World Cup Final in Rome.

Mastery of Mind and Marksmanship
To an outside spectator, pistol shooting looks simple, but Suruchi emphasizes that the true contest occurs within the mind. Controlling breathing, steadying heart rate, and maintaining focus across 24 elimination shots requires immense emotional regulation. She views technical mistakes as opportunities to refine her alignment rather than failures.
This mental resilience is reinforced by structured support from the National Rifle Association of India and guidance from coach Suresh Singh. Despite her rapid rise, Suruchi remains deeply grounded, balancing training camps with farm work and household responsibilities at home
