Vinesh Phogat's return to competitive wrestling ended in disappointment at the Asian Games selection trials, but the former World Championships medallist made one thing clear after her exit she is not done yet.

"I will come back soon," Vinesh vowed after her campaign ended in the women's 53kg semifinals, where she suffered a narrow 6-4 defeat to Asian Championships bronze medallist Meenakshi. The result ended her hopes of representing India at the upcoming Asian Games, but the trials also offered a glimpse of the resilience and fighting spirit that have defined Vinesh's career for more than a decade.

Her comeback campaign may not have produced the ending she wanted, but it delivered drama, determination and reminders of why she remains one of Indian wrestling's most compelling figures.

The trials marked Vinesh's first appearance in competition after a prolonged absence from the mat. Questions naturally surrounded her form, match fitness and ability to immediately compete against the country's emerging generation of wrestlers. She answered some of those questions emphatically in her opening bout.

Facing Jyoti, Vinesh looked sharp and composed, securing a convincing 7-1 victory to announce her return. The performance demonstrated that despite the time away from competition, her wrestling instincts remained intact.

The win also set up a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash that would produce one of the most dramatic matches of the trials.

If there was one bout that encapsulated Vinesh's fighting character, it came against Nishu. The contest appeared to be slipping away early as Vinesh found herself trailing 5-0. At one stage, she was also in danger of being pinned, with Nishu seemingly in complete control. Many wrestlers would have struggled to recover from such a position.

Vinesh, however, refused to surrender.

Gradually, she clawed her way back into the match, point by point. The momentum shifted as she closed the deficit and eventually levelled the score at 6-6.

The drama did not end there. A controversial stoppage led to a challenge, adding further tension to an already intense contest. The challenge ultimately went in Vinesh's favour, and after the final review was rejected, she emerged with a remarkable 7-6 victory.

The comeback was one of the standout moments of the trials and showcased the competitive fire that continues to burn within the veteran wrestler.

The victory over Nishu earned Vinesh a place in the semifinals against Meenakshi, one of India's leading wrestlers in the weight category and an Asian Championships bronze medallist. The bout was closely contested throughout.

Both wrestlers fought cautiously, aware that a place in the final and a potential Asian Games berth was at stake. Unlike the dramatic swings seen in the previous round, the semifinal was decided by small margins. In the end, Meenakshi held her nerve and secured a 6-4 victory. For Vinesh, the defeat brought an abrupt end to a comeback that had generated significant attention across Indian wrestling.

The loss also meant that her dream of competing at the upcoming Asian Games was over.

While the semifinal result will dominate the headlines, the trials represented something bigger for Vinesh. Over the course of her career, she has experienced some of the highest highs and lowest lows in Indian sport. Commonwealth Games gold medals, Asian Games success, World Championship podium finishes and Olympic heartbreak have all formed part of her journey.

The latest chapter added another emotional moment.

Despite the defeat, Vinesh demonstrated that she remains capable of competing with some of the country's best wrestlers. Her victories over Jyoti and Nishu showed flashes of the wrestler who has been one of India's most successful female athletes.

Just as importantly, she proved that her competitive instincts remain intact.

The immediate result is clear Vinesh will not be part of India's Asian Games squad in the 53kg category. However, her post-trials message suggests that this is not the end of her wrestling journey. Her promise to return indicates that she still has unfinished business on the mat. At a time when a new generation of Indian wrestlers is emerging, Vinesh's experience and determination continue to make her a formidable competitor. The trials may have ended in heartbreak, but they also demonstrated that she remains willing to fight through adversity.

The comeback run featured everything: a dominant opening victory, a dramatic escape against Nishu, controversy, challenges, emotional moments and ultimately disappointment in the semifinals.

For now, the Asian Games dream has been dashed.

But if her words are any indication, Vinesh Phogat's wrestling story is not over yet.
